Supporting New Physicians and New Parents: A Call to Create a Standard Parental Leave Policy for Residents.

Parents taking leave after the birth of a child is associated with significant benefits for infants, mothers, and fathers. Although nearly 40% of residents have or plan to have children during residency, there is no standard parental leave policy for these trainees. In this Perspective, the authors discuss the benefits of parental leave, synthesize findings about maternity bias and other negative effects of the current variable approaches to parental leave during residency, and explore underlying causes of the lack of a standard parental leave policy for residents. They also call on the Accred

Barriers to Accessing Paid Parental Leave Among Birthing Parents With Perinatal Health Complications: A Multiple-Methods Study.

INTRODUCTION: Even in the small number of U.S. states with paid parental leave (PPL) programs, studies have found awareness of PPL remains low and unevenly distributed among parents. Moreover, little is known about whether parents with perinatal health complications have unmet needs in obtaining information about and support for accessing parental leave during that time. This study aims to address this research gap. Given the strong evidence linking paid leave with improvements in maternal and infant health, it is critical to evaluate access among vulnerable populations. METHODS: We used a mu

Does verbal abuse leave deeper scars: a study of children and parents.

This study investigating the effects of verbal abuse on children and their abused parents, tends to support the clinical impression that verbal abuse may have a greater impact for a longer period of time. Although there are very few pure forms of verbal abuse, there are some parents who use verbal abuse but would hit their children, neglect them, or involve them in sex. Verbal abuse may become an increasingly frequent form of controlling and disciplining children because of the increased awareness of physical abuse and because of the possible declining value of children. Verbal abuse may have

Parental Leave and Corporate Welfare at the Territorial Health Company of Fermo. A Cross- Sectional Prospective Study (Marche, Italy).

INTRODUCTION: One of today's main issues is balancing work and family life, which significantly impacts the socio-economic and working conditions of the population. Since the last century, support for parenthood has been at the center of legislative attention both in Italy and Europe. The Italian Constitution of 1948 began addressing the shift from the woman's exclusively domestic role, promoting female workforce integration from the 1950s. Today, Italian legislation focuses on gender equality and worker protection, with measures aimed at reconciling work and family life. Recent terminological

Baby Fever: Examining Parental Leave Policies and Pregnancy Accommodations on Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency and Graduate Medical Education (GME) Websites.

INTRODUCTION: Parental leave (PL) and maternity policies are important considerations that can influence prospective residents' selection of emergency medicine (EM) residency programs, yet little research has explored their transparency on program websites, often the first contact point for applicants. Accessibility is vital as policies vary widely, and related inquiries have been traditionally stigmatized. This study aimed to evaluate the availability of PL and pregnancy accommodation information provided on the websites of EM residency programs and affiliated graduate medical education (GME)

Impact of earned sick leave policies on parent-perpetrated maltreatment of children under five.

BACKGROUND: Earned sick leave (ESL) impacts the economic security of families of workers as it enables workers to take time off to address personal or familial health issues, with pay and job protection. All forms of child maltreatment are strongly related to the economic position of a family, but the relationship between state-level ESL policy adoption and rates of parent-perpetrated child maltreatment remains unexamined. METHODS: Annual state rates of parent-perpetrated maltreatment, neglect and physical abuse of children under the age of 5 years were derived from the National Child Abuse a

Toward Sustainable Workplaces: The Roles of Work-Family Conflict, Social Support, and Meaning in Employee Well-Being and Performance After Parental Leave.

This study aims to examine the associations of work-family conflict, perceived social support, and meaning in work with well-being, engagement, and performance among employees returning from parental leave. The study is grounded in the Job Demands-Resources model and uses cross-sectional survey data from 1199 Romanian employees returning from parental leave. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test a comprehensive model linking job demands and resources to individual and organizational outcomes. Results indicate that both work-to-family and family-to-work conflict are negatively

Maternal depression and paternity leave-taking in Italy: the mediating role of coparenting and parenting stress.

The transition to parenthood represents a vulnerable period for maternal mental health. Although current literature recognizes the benefit of paternity leave-taking on maternal mental health during the post-partum and family well-being, empirical evidence on its impact remains limited. The present study aimed to evaluate the association of fathers' paternal leave on maternal mental health outcomes, as mediated by co-parenting and parenting stress. A sample of 346 Italian mothers (Mage = 34.25; SD = 4.45) of infants aged 0-12 months (Childs' age in days M = 144.97; SD = 103.05) completed an onl

Family Planning and Parental Leave in Obstetrics and Gynecology Fellowships: A Nation-Wide Survey of Fellows and Program Directors in the United States.

AIMS: The United States is the only developed nation without a mandated paid parental leave. As of 2022, the Accreditation Council for General Medical Education has mandated a minimum 6-week parental leave during medical training in US training programs. Our objective was to evaluate current parental leave policies and attitudes toward leave across OBGYN subspecialties, identify barriers to fellows taking leave, and evaluate the level of support for lactation. METHODS: We distributed an anonymous electronic questionnaire to fellows and program directors (PDs) across OBGYN fellowships in five

To Stay or Not To Stay: Adolescent Client, Parent, and Counselor Perspectives on Leaving Substance Abuse Treatment Early.

Increasing motivation and raising retention rates are considerable challenges for providers of adolescent substance abuse treatment. Research has shown that motivation for treatment, social influences (peers, family, counselors), and for some clients external pressure from the juvenile justice system, can serve as key factors in successful retention. To further understand influences on motivation and retention, focus groups were conducted in two residential treatment facilities. Adolescent clients, parents, and treatment staff were asked to describe their experiences with the treatment process

The impact of paid family leave on parent and infant health outcomes: a systematic review of quasi-experimental research.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong international evidence that Paid Family Leave (PFL) policies support the physical health and mental health of parents and infants and domestic evidence of its benefits on family economic well-being, the United States lacks a national PFL policy. METHODS: This systematic review sought to evaluate the association of PFL in the United States with parent and infant health outcomes. Quasi-experimental research studies with comparisons of states with PFL policies versus those without such policies were eligible for review. A search strategy was created to match the resear

Social anxiety in adolescence and the first timing of parental home leaving and living with a partner: a longitudinal population-based Young-HUNT3 study in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety can make significant life transitions from adolescence to young adulthood particularly stressful. Despite the potential impact, few population-based longitudinal studies have examined the relationship between social anxiety and the timing of key markers of the transition to adulthood. This study investigated the association between social anxiety and the timing of two critical life events: first leaving the parental home and first living with a partner. METHODS: Data were drawn from 8,199 adolescents aged 13-19 who participated in the Young-HUNT3 survey (2006-2008)

The Amsterdam Sexual Abuse Case: What Scars did it Leave? Long-Term Course of Psychological Problems for Children Who have been Sexually Abused at a Very Young Age, and their Parents.

Longitudinal research of CSA in infancy and early childhood is scarce. The current study examined the long-term course of psychological outcomes (PTSD, dissociation and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems) in children who were sexually abused in the early childhood. Additionally, we looked into the outcomes for their parents by assessing PTSD symptoms and negative emotional reactions towards the sexual abuse of their child. We examined the outcomes for five consecutive years in a sample of children (n = 45) who were sexually abused at a very young age (0-3) and their parents (n

Taking Leave During Residency: Types of Absences and Subsequent Delays and Variations in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medical Board Pass Rates.

There is limited literature examining the reasons physical medicine and rehabilitation residents take an extended leave of absence during residency and the impact of leave on board examination performance. Such information could better inform leave policies, help guide residency program directors, and potentially destigmatize taking leave. Study objectives were to describe the characteristics of physical medicine and rehabilitation residents who take leave during residency, compare differences in part I (written) and part II (oral) certification examination performance, and determine the preva
