Parental Involvement Policies for Minors Seeking Abortion in the Southeast and Quality of Care.

INTRODUCTION: Thirty-seven states require minors seeking abortion to involve a parent, either through notification or consent. Little research has examined how implementation of these laws affect service delivery and quality of care for those who involve a parent. METHODS: Between May 2018 and September 2019, in-depth interviews were conducted with 34 staff members involved in scheduling, counseling, and administration at abortion facilities in three Southeastern states. Interviews explored procedures for documenting parental involvement, minors' and parents' reactions to requirements, and ch

Parental height in relation to offspring coronary heart disease: examining transgenerational influences on health using the west of Scotland Midspan Family Study.

BACKGROUND: Adult height is known to be inversely related to coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. We sought to investigate transgenerational influence of parental height on offspring's CHD risk. METHODS: Parents took part in a cardiorespiratory disease survey in two Scottish towns during the 1970s, in which their physical stature was measured. In 1996, their offspring were invited to participate in a similar survey, which included an electrocardiogram recording and risk factor assessment. RESULTS: A total of 2306 natural offspring aged 30-59 years from 1456 couples were subsequently flagged fo

Lack of effective home quarantine: The cause of the continuing prevalence of hand, foot, and mouth disease in China?

BACKGROUND: Home quarantine as a non-pharmaceutical measure is a key strategy for preventing the spread of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and herpangina (HA). However, the status of home quarantine remains unclear. This study aimed to provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of the HFMD and HA by investigating the situation and determining the factors influencing home quarantine in children with HFMD or HA. METHODS: The convenience sampling method was used in this cross-sectional study involving parents whose children suffered from HFMD or HA in 2019. An online questio

Parents' perspectives of the new neonatal BCG vaccination pathway in England: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The neonatal Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) selective vaccination pathway in England was revised in September 2021 due to the introduction of a national evaluation of newborn screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). BCG is a live attenuated vaccine that is contraindicated in infants with SCID, hence BCG vaccination was moved from soon after birth to after SCID results were available, typically at 14-17 days. The transition also shifted vaccination delivery from maternity units to community clinics, raising concerns about potential barriers to access and lower vaccine

Adolescents Obtaining Abortion Without Parental Consent: Their Reasons and Experiences of Social Support.

CONTEXT: Most states require adolescents younger than 18 to involve a parent prior to obtaining an abortion, yet little is known about adolescents' reasons for choosing abortion or the social support received by those who seek judicial bypass of parental consent for abortion. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 individuals aged 16-19 who sought judicial bypass in Texas between 2015 and 2016 to explore why they chose to get an abortion, who they involved in their decision and what their experiences of social support were. Data were analyzed thematically using stigma and social

Children and adolescents - who can give consent?

Case histories are based on actual medical negligence claims or medicolegal referrals; however certain facts have been omitted or changed by the author to ensure the anonymity of the parties involved. Can children and adolescents consent to their own medical treatment? Do general practitioners owe teenagers a duty of confidentiality? This article examines the legal obligations of GPs when obtaining consent to medical treatment from patients who are under 18 years of age.

Factors influencing marital stability among HIV discordant couples in northern Thailand.

The burden of HIV in stable relationships places emotional, economic and physical stresses on families. We compared the influence of HIV notification on marital partnerships in northern Thailand among a cohort of HIV discordant couples, and identified factors associated with marital disruption. Data were collected using in-depth interviews with both members of six separated or divorced couples and 13 couples whose relationship remained intact. Five factors influenced marital stability following HIV notification: longer duration of relationship; economic constraints, extended family members' op

Familial effects of BRCA1 genetic mutation testing: changes in perceived family functioning.

This study expands recent research that examines how the receipt of BRCA1 genetic test results affects family adaptability and cohesion 1 year after genetic risk notification. Study participants were members of a large Utah-based kindred with an identified mutation at the BRCA1 locus. The final sample, 90 men and 132 women, contributed information before genetic testing (baseline) and 4 months and/or 1 year after receipt of genetic test results. After controlling for other factors such as family coping resources (Family Crises-Oriented Personal Evaluation Scale) and strains (Family Strains Ind

Risk Factors for Maltreatment in Siblings of Abused Children.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between child maltreatment (abuse and neglect) in one sibling and that in another as well as associated risk factors. METHODS: The participants were 520 sibling pairs enrolled in a population-based birth cohort study in Brisbane, Australia (N = 1040). Exposure to suspected child maltreatment was measured by linkage with state child protection agency data. Self-reports of childhood sexual abuse were also collected at the 21-year follow-up. RESULTS: There were notifications in both children for 8.5% of the sibling pairs (n = 44). A notification in the fir

Gait disturbance interpreted as cerebellar ataxia after MMR vaccination at 15 months of age: a follow-up study.

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination was included in the Danish childhood vaccination programme in 1987. During the following 10-y period, 550 notification records of adverse events after MMR vaccination at 15 mo of age have been registered, and a total of 41 notifications have included "gait disturbance". This corresponds to a frequency of 8 per 100,000 doses of MMR vaccine used for 15-mo-old children. The symptoms and signs are characteristic of cerebellar ataxia. In 28 notifications, the descriptions by the doctors included only "gait disturbance", while in 13 an additional interpre

Ohio House approves two restrictive abortion bills.

A bill prohibiting the use of state funds to pay for state employees' health benefits related to "nontherapeutic abortions" passed the House on September 9 by a vote of 60-34. The measure, HB 395, defines a "nontherapeutic abortion" as a procedure performed when the life of the mother would not be endangered by carrying the pregnancy to term; the bill was amended to exempt victims of rape and incest from the funding restriction. Under HB 395, the state would pay for benefit plans that allow state employees to purchase an optional rider for abortion coverage. Also on September 9, the House pass

Multiplex PCR testing requires a robust multi-disciplinary strategy to effectively manage identified cases of chlamydial conjunctivitis.

INTRODUCTION: Implementation of an in-house polymerase chain reaction (PCR) multiplex assay by West of Scotland Specialist Virology Centre to improve sample processing means all viral eye swabs are now routinely tested for Adenovirus, Herpes simplex, Varicella and Chlamydia. Concern was raised regarding subsequent management and sexual health attendance for Chlamydia-positive patients identified in eye casualty. METHODS: A retrospective review of virology results identified 76 Chlamydia-positive patients from 1914 eye swabs (4%) from May 2007 to April 2008. Of these results, 12 originated fro

Parental exposure to lead and small for gestational age births.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies about the effect of lead exposure on adverse birth outcomes are still inconsistent and few studies estimate the relationship between parental lead exposure and small for gestational age (SGA) infants. An occupational cohort study to assess whether parental lead exposure would be related to decreased birth weight and shortened gestational ages of their offspring was conducted. Whether higher lead exposure doses would increase risks of low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery, and SGA births was also investigated. METHODS: A Program to Reduce Exposure by Surveillanc

Sickle cell trait newborn screen results: disclosure and management.

This study aims to evaluate the notification process of sickle cell trait (SCT) identified by newborn screening in Alberta. On April 1, 2019, Alberta began newborn screening for sickle cell disease (SCD) and elected to report sickle cell trait (SCT). For 1 year, healthcare providers (HCPs) were sent a questionnaire which addressed the perceived importance of disclosing the SCT results, whether HCPs felt competent in disclosing the result, knowledge of available resources, and comfort with coordinating and interpreting testing for the newborn's parents. As a control, we collected data from HCPs

Do parental involvement laws deter risky teen sex?

Parental involvement (PI) laws require that physicians notify or obtain consent from a parent(s) of a minor seeking an abortion before performing the procedure. Several studies suggest that PI laws curb risky sexual behavior because teens realize that they would be compelled to discuss a subsequent pregnancy with a parent. We show that prior evidence based on gonorrhea rates overlooked the frequent under-reporting of gonorrhea by race and ethnicity, and present new evidence on the effects of PI laws using more current data on the prevalence of gonorrhea and data that are novel to this literatu
