The heart of parenting: Parent HR dynamics and negative parenting while resolving conflict with child.

The current study examined parent heart rate (HR) dynamic changing patterns and their links to observed negative parenting (i.e., emotional unavailability and psychological control) during a parent-child conflict resolution task among 150 parent-child dyads (child age ranged from 6 to 12 years, Mage = 8.54 ± 1.67). Parent HR was obtained from electrocardiogram (ECG) data collected during the parent-child conflict resolution task. Negative parenting was coded offline based on the video recording of the same task. Results revealed that emotionally sensitive parents during the task showed greater

Household chaos moderates the link between maternal attribution bias and parenting: Parenting: Science and Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Parents who attribute child misbehavior to children's intentions and dismiss situational factors tend to show more hostility and less warmth in their parenting behavior, and are at greater risk for maltreatment. We extended this literature by investigating the role of household chaos as a moderator of the link between maternal attribution biases and parenting behaviors. DESIGN: The current sample included 160 mothers of 3- to7-year-old children. Mothers provided reports on their attribution biases and household chaos levels. Maternal negativity and positivity were measured using se

Reductions in substance use-related parenting behaviors after participation in a digitally delivered parenting intervention.

UNLABELLED: The Family Check-Up Online (FCU-O) fills a unique gap in family prevention by providing digital, accessible content to support substance-involved parents outside of residential treatment settings to reduce the impact of substance use on parenting. We examined whether parents reported reductions in coping motivations for substance use (CM) and substance use-related parenting interference (PI) after completing the FCU-O substance use module. We further explored whether baseline substance use-related risk was associated with differential change in parenting outcomes over time. METHOD

Associations among retrospective parenting styles, retrospective food parenting, and current eating behaviors in Chinese adults.

The current study explored the relationships between retrospective parenting styles and food parenting in childhood (≤ 12 years old) and Chinese adults' current maladaptive and adaptive eating behaviors. We recruited 501 Chinese adults (50.30% men, aged 19-46 years). A set of questionnaires were used to measure retrospective parenting styles (i.e., emotional warmth, rejection, and overprotection), food parenting (i.e., parental concern, monitoring, pressure to eat, and restriction), and current maladaptive (i.e., disordered eating) and adaptive (i.e., intuitive eating) eating behaviors. The Laboratory Parenting Assessment Battery: development and preliminary validation of an observational parenting rating system.

Investigations of contributors to and consequences of the parent-child relationship require accurate assessment of the nature and quality of parenting. The present study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the Laboratory Parenting Assessment Battery (Lab-PAB), an observational rating system that assesses parenting behaviors during the early childhood years. Dyadic parent-child interaction was assessed observationally in a community sample of 154 families (154 mothers, 154 fathers, 154 biological children 3-6 years old). Parenting behaviors were rated with a comprehensive c

Parenting in Moments: An Ecological Momentary Assessment of Parenting and Adolescent Substance Use and Externalizing Behaviors.

A large body of traditional survey and lab-based research has found that parenting behaviors are associated with risk for substance use (SU) and externalizing symptoms in adolescents. It is presumed that parenting effects on adolescent SU and symptoms unfold within families over moments in everyday life. However, this has rarely been tested. The present ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study tested within-person momentary associations among parenting, adolescent emotional and reward arousal, and SU and externalizing symptoms. Eighty-four 14-18 year olds completed five surveys per day for

Parenting young children during COVID-19: Parenting stress trajectories, parental mental health, and child problem behaviors.

Parenting stress reflects a discrepancy between a parent's perception of their resources, the demands of their child's needs, and the caregiving relationship and contexts (Abidin, 1992). Parenting stress can increase the risk of issues in the parent-child relationship, as well as child behavioral and emotional outcomes (Neece et al., 2012; Spinelli et al., 2021). Chronic stressors, such as living through the COVID-19 pandemic, have the potential to increase the demands of parenting and thus parenting stress. Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined parenting stress trajectories of 298 A

Infant temperament, early-childhood parenting, and early-adolescent development: Testing alternative models of Parenting × Temperament interaction.

Here we evaluate whether infant difficult temperament (6 months) functions as a vulnerability or more general plasticity factor when investigating effects of early-childhood parenting (8-42 months) on both positive and negative early-adolescent socioemotional development (age 8-11 years). Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, N = 14,541) and a re-parameterized model-testing approach to distinguish alternative person × environment conceptual models, results indicated that temperament × parenting interacted in predicting externalizing (i.e., hyperactivity,

Cumulative and Overload Patterns of Associations between Parenting Congruence and Youth Depressive Symptoms across Parenting Dimensions.

The congruence of parenting dimensions is an important component within the family system, yet its unique role in youth adjustment remains understudied, particularly in the Chinese context, where parents are traditionally expected to fulfill different socialization roles. The current study investigated how the absolute levels and congruence of four parenting dimensions (e.g., warmth, autonomy support, coercion, and psychological control) were associated with youth’s depressive symptoms, and whether these associations varied by parent and youth gender, within the Chinese cultural context. Data

Psychopathology and parenting: An examination of perceived and observed parenting in mothers with depression and PTSD.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum period represents a major transition in the lives of many women, a time when women are at increased risk for the emergence of psychopathology including depression and PTSD. The current study aimed to better understand the unique contributions of clinically significant postpartum depression, PTSD, and comorbid PTSD/depression on mother-infant bonding and observed maternal parenting behaviors (i.e., behavioral sensitivity, negative affect, positive affect) at 6 months postpartum. METHODS: Mothers (n=164; oversampled for history of childhood maltreatment given parent s

Parenting under pressure: a grounded theory of parenting young children with life-threatening congenital heart disease.

AIM: To report a grounded theory study to describe the process of parenting young children who have survived hypoplastic left heart syndrome to inform parent-focused interventions. BACKGROUND: Technological advances in paediatric cardiology worldwide have improved the survival rates for young children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who undergo staged surgical palliation. These children, however, are at risk for life-threatening complications and parents are charged with the responsibility to monitor their children at home with minimal support and guidance from healthcare professionals o

Can technology and the media help reduce dysfunctional parenting and increase engagement with preventative parenting interventions?

In an evaluation of the television series "Driving Mum and Dad Mad," 723 families participated and were randomly assigned to either a standard or technology enhanced viewing condition (included additional Web-support). Parents in both conditions reported significant improvements from pre- to postintervention in their child's behavior, dysfunctional parenting, parental anger, depression, and self-efficacy. Short-term improvements were maintained at 6-months follow-up. Regressions identified predictors of program outcomes and level of involvement. Parents who watched the entire series had more s

Parenting Stress in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystemic genetic disorder with clinical variability. As the needs of children with TSC may differ, parenting demands may similarly differ. Characterizing parenting stress, or emotional maladaptation from parenting duties, can enable health care providers to assist parents of children with TSC. METHODS: Multiple methods were used to survey 269 parents of children (aged zero to 12 years) with TSC. The Parenting Stress Index (PSI) measured parenting stress, and children's TSC clinical, seizure, and neuropsychiatric features were obtained. A

[Parenting capacity of mothers with schizophrenia].

Recent studies indicate that the pregnancy rates of mothers with schizophrenia do not differ significantly from those of the general population. Mothers' severe mental illness, combined with poor social support and comorbidity, may significantly affect her parenting capacity. However, the poor quality of parenting by psychotic mothers should not be taken for granted, in advance. Some of them may become excellent parents while other may abuse their children and finally lose custody because of this. The parenting capacity is significantly influenced by the existing insight of patient-parent's di

Parenting infants conceived by gamete donation.

In recent years, concerns have been raised regarding the potentially negative consequences of gamete donation for parent-child relationships. Findings are presented of a study of families with an infant conceived by gamete donation. Fifty donor insemination families and 51 egg donation families were compared with 80 natural conception families on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of the psychological well-being of the parents, the quality of parent-child relationships, and infant temperament. The differences that were identified indicated more positive parent-child relationship

Childhood abuse, parenting and postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVE: While the potential negative effects on children of maternal depression has been documented, the influence of a maternal history of childhood abuse on child development is unclear. This study, the first stage of a 3-year follow-up study, looks at childhood abuse in women with depression in the postpartum period. METHOD: Fifty-six women admitted with postpartum depressive disorders were assessed with respect to their wellbeing, relationships and infant interaction. Twenty-eight women had a history of sexual abuse before the age of 16, nine physical/emotional abuse and 19 had no hist
