In this study, three different diagnostic tests for parvovirus were compared with vaccination status and parvovirus genotype in suspected canine parvovirus cases. Faecal samples from vaccinated (N17) and unvaccinated or unknown vaccination status (N41) dogs that had clinical signs of parvovirus infection were tested using three different assays of antigen tests, conventional and quantitative PCR tests. The genotype of each sample was determined by sequencing. In addition to the suspected parvovirus samples, 21 faecal samples from apparently healthy dogs were tested in three diagnostic tests to

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) is one of the most important viral diseases affecting domestic dogs worldwide, particularly in unvaccinated and poorly managed canine populations. Despite its major veterinary and economic impact, epidemiological information regarding canine parvovirus remains scarce in Guinea, especially in the urban commune of Labé. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of canine parvovirus and identify factors associated with infection among dogs in the study area. A descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted between September and November 2024 among 102 do

Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV 2) is a highly contagious viral pathogen responsible for severe gastroenteritis in canine species worldwide. This study provides the first comprehensive molecular characterization of CPV 2 variants circulating in domestic dogs in Botswana. A total of 187 fecal samples from diarrheic dogs presented at veterinary clinics were tested for CPV 2 using an ELISA point-of-care test and molecular assays for confirmation. A CPV 2 prevalence of 62.0% was detected via ELISA, compared to 100% via qPCR. Genetic characterization using minor groove binder probe-based qPCR assays and s

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is an important and highly prevalent pathogen of dogs that causes acute hemorrhagic enteritis disease. Here, we describe a rapid method for the construction and characterization of a full-length infectious clone (rCPV) of CPV. Feline kidney (F81) cells were transfected with rCPV incorporating an engineered EcoR I site that served as a genetic marker. The rescued virus was indistinguishable from that of wild-type virus in its biological properties.

Canine parvovirus type 2c (CPV-2c) emerged in 2000 and is known for causing a more severe disease than other CPV-2 variants in puppies. In 2015, the emerging CPV-2c variant was isolated in Taiwan and it subsequently became the predominant variant. To trace the evolution of Taiwanese CPV-2c, we compared complete VP2 genes of CPV-2c from Taiwan and sequences obtained from GenBank. The evolutionary rate of CPV-2c was estimated to be 4.586 × 10-4 substitutions per site per year (95% highest posterior density (HPD) was 3.284-6.076 × 10-4). The time to the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) dated t

BACKGROUND: Viral diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in puppies. There is a belief among veterinary practitioners and even educational institutions that the vaccines made in Brazil against canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine adenovirus (CAV) are ineffective or only partially effective.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at comparing the immunity of two multivalent vaccines in adult dogs in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais state, Brazil.
METHODS: The study was carried out at the Animal Protection Association and a total of 60 adult mongrel dogs we

BACKGROUND: Canine parvovirus (CPV) is an important pathogen that causes acute enteric disease in dogs. It has mutated and spread throughout the world in dog populations. We provide an update on the molecular characterization of CPV that circulated in Nanjing, a provincial capital in China between 2009 and 2012.
RESULTS: Seventy rectal swab samples were collected from the dogs diagnosed with CPV infection in 8 animal hospitals of Nanjing. Sequence analysis of VP2 genes of 31 samples revealed that 29 viral strains belonged to CPV-2a subtype, while other two strains were classified into CPV-2b.

This study aimed to assess the impact of oral glutamine supplementation in dogs infected with Canine Parvovirus Type 2 (CPV-2). The dogs were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 10) received glutamine supplementation (500 mg/kg/day), and ad libitum feeding; Group 2 (control) (n = 10) received a placebo and ad libitum feeding. Group 1 dogs were significantly younger (mean 3.5 ± 0.5 months) than those in Group 2 (mean 6.3 ± 3.0 months; p = 0.036). Data from the two groups were compared at the hospital admission and discharge. No significant differences were observed between groups in

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) is one of the most important pathogens of dogs of all ages, causing pandemic infections that are characterized by fatal hemorrhagic enteritis. The CPV-2 vaccine is recommended as a core vaccine for pet animals. Despite the intensive practice of active immunization, CPV-2 remains a global threat. In this study, a multi-epitope vaccine against CPV-2 was designed, targeting the highly conserved capsid protein (VP2) via in silico approaches. Several immunoinformatics methods, such as epitope screening, molecular docking, and simulation were used to design a potential vacc

The role of mast cells (MCs) in allergic reactions and parasitic infections is well established. Their involvement in host immune response against bacterial and viral infections is reported. In this study, investigation is made to determine if MCs are associated with Canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2)-induced enteritis with crypt abscess (ECA). Mast cell count (MCC) was made on toluidine blue-stained intestinal sections from a total of 34 dogs. These included 16 dogs exhibiting ECA positive for CPV-2 and negative for Canine distemper virus and Canine coronavirus by immunohistochemistry and fluorescen

The capsid structural protein VP2 of canine parvovirus (CPV) can self-assemble into highly organized virus-like particles (VLPs) and retain major immunoreactivity. In this study, different recombinant baculoviruses that expressed varying fusion proteins of the CPV VP2 protein with the T cell determinant and/or the linear virus-neutralizing epitope of rabies virus (RV) were generated. Infection with these baculoviruses changed BmN cell morphology and inhibited their proliferation as well as damaged silkworms and pupae. However, infection with these baculoviruses induced high levels of recombina

The purpose of this study was to estimate the apparent prevalence and identify risk factors for antibody levels (AL) against canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV), and canine adenovirus (CAV) in three communities in the metropolitan area of Quito, Ecuador that have limited access to regular veterinary care. Whole blood samples were collected from 154 dogs presenting to three veterinary field clinics in mainland Ecuador and tested for AL against CDV, CPV, and CAV by a commercially available point-of-care ELISA. Potential risk factors for the presence of AL were analyzed. A major

Minute virus of canines (MVC), also known as canine parvovirus type 1, was initially believed to be a nonpathogenic agent, since it was first isolated from canine fecal specimens in the late 1960s. However, subsequent pathological as well as epidemiological studies suggested that MVC is a pathogen of neonatal puppies and is widely distributed among domestic dogs in the United States. The virus also has been shown to cause fetal deaths. Nevertheless, the virus was not detected in dogs outside the United States until recently, presumably because of a lack of widespread availability of the only s

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is a highly contagious and often fatal canine pathogen, with antigenic variants (CPV-2a, 2b, 2c), maternally derived antibody (MDA) interference, and lack of Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals (DIVA) capability limiting current vaccines. Using an immunoinformatics-based reverse vaccinology approach, we identified conserved B-cell, cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL), and helper T lymphocyte (HTL) epitopes from CPV-2 structural (VP1, VP2) and nonstructural (NS1, NS2) proteins. These were screened for antigenicity, immunogenicity, safety, and stability. Th

To investigate the epidemic profile and genetic diversity of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), a total of 111 clinical samples collected from dogs suspected of CPV-2 infection in 10 cities of Henan province of China during 2020 to 2021 were screened by PCR. The results showed a CPV-2-positive rate of 88.29% (98/111). Nearly full-length genomes of 98 CPV-2 strains were sequenced and analyzed. CPV-2c strains (91.84%, 90/98) were significantly higher than that of new CPV-2a strains (8.16%, 8/98) in Henan province without detecting other CPV genotypes, indicating that CPV-2c has become the dominan

To obtain a bivalence vaccine against canine rabies virus and canine parvovirus, a chimeric rabies virus expressing canine parvovirus VP2 protein was generated by the technique of reverse genetics. It was shown that the chimeric virus designated as HEP-Flury (VP2) grew well on BHK-21 cells and the VP2 gene could still be stably expressed after ten passages on BHK-21 cells. Experiments on the mice immunized with the chimeric virus HEP-Flury (VP2) demonstrated that specific antibodies against rabies virus and canine parvovirus were induced in immunized mice after vaccination with the live chimer

In clinical practice, canine infectious diseases including rabies, canine distemper, and canine parvovirosis pose substantial health threats to canines. In this study, we constructed a recombinant rabies virus (RABV) rHEP-Flury(H+VP2) expressing the canine distemper virus (CDV) H gene and canine parvovirus (CPV) VP2 gene, and evaluated its growth characteristics and immunogenicity. The recombinant virus was generated by inserting the CDV H gene and CPV VP2 gene between the G and L genes of HEP-Flury strain. We found that the recombinant virus maintained high genetic stability after 20 consecut

Canine parvovirus (CPV) infection poses a serious threat to pangolins, but the characteristics of the host response at the metabolic level remain unclear. In this study, we used non-targeted fecal metabolomics to systematically analyze differences in fecal metabolites in the Malaysian pangolin and the Chinese pangolin before and after CPV infection. The results indicated that CPV infection significantly altered the fecal metabolic profiles of both pangolin species. In the Malaysian pangolin, post-infection differential metabolites were primarily enriched in lipid metabolic pathways, such as α-

With the increase of blood transfusion in veterinary medicine, the presence of endemic viral agents in the blood should be carefully investigated. For this reason, the blood of feline and canine blood donors was screened to detect the presence of herpesviruses, especially gammaherpesviruses and parvoviruses, and to characterize the viruses detected. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on 31 cats and 54 dogs, enrolled as voluntary blood donors. Nested PCR was carried out to detect herpesvirus and parvovirus DNA. Sequencing and real-time PCR were used to confirm and quantify posi
