BACKGROUND: Actinobacillus suis disease has been reported in a wide range of vertebrate species, but is most commonly found in swine. A. suis is a commensal of the tonsils of the soft palate of swine, but in the presence of unknown stimuli it can invade the bloodstream, causing septicaemia and sequelae such as meningitis, arthritis, and death. It is genotypically and phenotypically similar to A. pleuropneumoniae, the causative agent of pleuropneumonia, and to other members of the family Pasteurellaceae that colonise tonsils. At present, very little is known about the genes involved in attachme

Strains of the Pasteurellaceae bacteria Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica are major etiological agents of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Treatment of BRD with antimicrobials is becoming more challenging due to the increasing occurrence of resistance in infecting strains. In Pasteurellaceae strains exhibiting resistance to multiple antimicrobials including aminoglycosides, beta-lactams, macrolides and sulfonamides, the resistance determinants are often chromosomally encoded within integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). To gain a more comprehensive picture of ICE structur

Haemophilus ducreyi is the etiologic agent of chancroid, a sexually transmitted genital ulcer disease that facilitates the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. In the human model of infection, the histopathology of infected sites in part resembles a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response. In this study, T cells were isolated from skin biopsy specimens obtained from 24 subjects who were infected for 7 to 14 days. One clone and 12 lines that responded to H. ducreyi antigens were obtained from 12 of the subjects. Fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis showed that the antigen-r

Gallibacterium anatis (G. anatis), a member of the Pasteurellaceae family, normally inhabits the upper respiratory and lower genital tracts of poultry. However, under certain circumstances of immunosuppression, co-infection (especially with Escherichia coli or Mycoplasma), or various stressors, G. anatis caused respiratory, reproductive, and systemic diseases. Infection with G. anatis has emerged in different countries worldwide. The bacterium affects mainly chickens; however, other species of domestic and wild birds may get infected. Horizontal, vertical, and venereal routes of G. anatis infe

The disease induced by Bibersteinia trehalosi usually occurs in lambs. It is triggered by certain stress factors and often emerges in the form of severe outbreaks. In adult sheep, only sporadic cases have been reported so far. This paper reports a B. trehalosi-induced high-mortality case occurring only in adult sheep. Seventy out of 628 adult sheep (11%) died in the affected pen during the six days of the outbreak. None of the 146 lambs kept in the neighbouring pen showed any clinical signs during that period. Several preceding events (shearing, vaccination and antiparasitic treatment) can be

Infectious coryza, caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum, is an acute respiratory disease of poultry that can result in substantial morbidity, mortality, and economic losses. In March 2017, the Turlock branch of the California Animal Health and Food Safety laboratory system encountered an unusual clinical and pathologic presentation of infectious coryza in 6 live, 29-d-old, commercial broiler chickens that were submitted for diagnostic investigation. Antemortem evaluation revealed severe neurologic signs, including disorientation, torticollis, and opisthotonos. Swollen head-like syndrome and s

Glaesserella parasuis (G. parasuis) causes inflammation and damage to piglets. Whether polyserositis caused by G. parasuis is due to tight junctions damage and the protective effect of baicalin on it have not been examined. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of baicalin on peritoneal tight junctions of piglets challenged with G. parasuis and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Piglets were challenged with G. parasuis and treated with or without baicalin. RT-PCR was performed to examine the expression of peritoneal tight junctions genes. Immunofluorescence was carried out to

Case history: In July and August 2019, 15/40, ≤48-hour-old calves became acutely ill. The calves were all born on-farm, transferred to pens soon after birth, and fed with "gold" colostrum. The hygiene, biosecurity and ventilation in the pens were poor. Of the 15 calves, 11 died or were euthanised and four calves, ≤48-hour-old, that became acutely ill later in the outbreak were treated with cefquinome, a fourth-generation cephalosporin, and recovered. Clinical findings: The affected calves presented with acute recumbency, lethargy, tachypnoea, tachycardia, increased lung sounds, inability to st

Histophilosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality as well as antimicrobial use in feedlot cattle across North America. Detection of Histophilus somni by culture is challenging, and there is no standardized tool for distinguishing isolates that carry virulence factors most likely to contribute to disease. The DR2 repeat of H. somni-associated virulence factor 'immunoglobulin-binding protein A' (ibpA DR2) harbors a Fic domain that mediates host cell cytotoxicity and is essential for histophilosis. For rapid detection of ibpA DR2 in extracted DNA, we developed a real-time recombinase

The composition of the bacterial flora in the calf nasopharynx might influence the risk of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). The aims of the present study were, firstly, to investigate the prevalence of bacteria potentially involved in BRD in the nasopharynx of veal calves and to identify associated risk factors for their presence, and, secondly, to provide data on antimicrobial resistance levels in these bacteria. Deep nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from veal calves on 12 Swiss farms over a period of one year by non-random, but systematic sampling for isolation of Pasteurellaceae and Myc

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of a Haemorrhagic Septicaemia (HS) like disease causing large mortalities in camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Asia and in Africa have been reported since 1890. Yet the aetiology of this condition remains elusive. This study is the first to apply state of the art molecular methods to shed light on the nasopharyngeal carrier state of Pasteurellaceae in camels. The study focused on HS causing Pasteurella multocida capsular types B and E. Other Pasteurellaceae, implicated in common respiratory infections of animals, were also investigated.
METHODS: In 2007 and 2008, 388 nasop

Mannheimiahaemolytica is an opportunistic agent of the respiratory tract of bovines, a member of the Pasteurellaceae family, and the causal agent of fibrinous pleuropneumonia. This bacterium possesses different virulence factors, allowing it to colonize and infect its host. The present work describes the isolation and characterization of a serine protease secreted by M. haemolytica serotype 1. This protease was isolated from M. haemolytica cultured media by precipitation with 50 % methanol and ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. It is a 70-kDa protease able to degrade sheep and bovi

BACKGROUND: Bacterial flagellin is a major target of innate and adaptive immunity, both of which can promote and/or compensate for deficiencies in each other's function.
METHODS: To investigate the role of innate immune detection of flagellin irrespective of adaptive immunity, we examined the consequences of loss of Toll-like receptor 5 (T5) and/or Nod-like receptor 4 (N4) upon a Rag1-deficient background.
RESULTS: Mice lacking Toll-like receptor 5 and Rag1 (T5/Rag-DKO) exhibited frequent lethal Pasteurellaceae-containing abscesses that prevented breeding of these mice. Mice lacking Toll-lik

The circumstances of diagnosis of human pasteurellosis are reviewed. The diagnosis is usually suspected for animal bite or scratch wounds. Conversely, in other infections the diagnosis is only based on bacteriological data. Phenotypic misidentification of Pasteurellaceae from clinical material is common. The phenotypic criteria of identification of the six species of human pathogen Pasteurella are presented. We emphasise that bite wound specimens have to be cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and yield an average of 5 bacterial isolates per culture. Antibiotic therapy relies upon amino

Mycoplasmopsis bovis and Histophilus somni are important bovine bacterial pathogens. M. bovis causes mastitis and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and is linked to reduced fertility and abortion. The H. somni is implicated in BRD, arthritis, and myocarditis. Currently, under the guidance of Certified Semen Services (CSS), semen used for artificial insemination (AI) is treated with gentamicin, tylosin, lincomycin, and spectinomycin (GTLS) during the semen extension process to control and prevent the transmission of various bacterial species, including M. bovis and H. somni. The GTLS has been sh

Case history: A 9-year-old warmblood gelding with a history of chronic intermittent tachypnoea and dyspnoea was presented for evaluation and removal of a mass on the left side of the neck. A fibrous mass adherent to the left jugular vein developed and was removed surgically 6 weeks later, at which time the owner requested an evaluation of the cause of the persistent respiratory signs first noted on primary admission. Clinical findings and treatment: Clinical findings included coarse lung sounds on thoracic auscultation, tracheal wheeze, and an abnormal trans-tracheal aspirate. These findings,

To explore the treatment of Chinese herbal medicine extracts on infectious rhinitis caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum, a strain of Avibacterium paragallinarum was isolated from the nasal cavity and infraorbital sinus of chickens suspected of infectious rhinitis, it was biologically identified as Bacillus paracarinus. Extracts of seven kinds of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine mixtures were explored to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by the microdilution method and the disc diffusion method. The antibacterial activity against pathogenic bact

Histophilus somni is an obligate inhabitant of the respiratory and genital mucosal surfaces of bovines and ovines. An individual strain can be a primary pathogen, an opportunistic pathogen, or a commensal, but can also move between these classifications if introduced into an appropriate site (e.g. the lungs) under conditions that favor bacterial persistence. H. somni is one of the bacterial agents responsible for bovine respiratory disease complex and can also cause a variety of systemic diseases in cattle and sheep. Isolates from disease sites, such as the lungs, heart, and brain, express a w
