Personality in patients with long-term patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Personality characteristics in patients with long-term patellofemoral pain were compared to those of matched controls and other groups both of non-patients and of psychiatric outpatients with character disorders. Personality was described using the self-administered dependency and alexithymia scales, the Karolinska Scales of Personality and the Rorschach inkblot method. The hypothesis was that the patellofemoral pain patients would have higher levels of anxiety, depression, helplessness, aggression and alexithymic characteristics than the matched controls. There were only a few significant dif

Bone mineral density in the chronic patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Bone mineral density (BMD) and clinical status of 40 patients with a chronic, unilateral patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) were determinated. The mean duration of the disease at the time of the follow-up was 7.6 +/- 1.8 (SD) years. The BMD was measured at the spine (L2-L4), and the femoral neck, trochanter area of the femur, distal femur, patella, proximal tibia, and calcaneus of both lower extremities using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometric (DXA) scanner. The mean BMD of the affected limb (compared with the unaffected side) was significantly lower in the distal femur (-3.3%; P = 0.002), p…

[Research progress on the etiology and treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome].

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common diseases that cause pain in the knee joint. At present, there is no specific diagnostic measure. The diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome may be considered when imaging is performed without cartilage, ligament and soft tissue injuries. The etiology includes abnormalities of the patellar motion caused by various anatomical abnormalities, such as abnormal patellar position, increased Q angle, and excessive valgus foot. Dysfunction of the lower extremity muscles such as the imbalance of the four biceps and the dysfunction of the g…

A systematic review of physical interventions for patellofemoral pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Physical interventions (nonpharmacological and nonsurgical) are the mainstay of treatment for patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Physiotherapy is the most common of all physical interventions and includes specific vastus medialis obliquus or general quadriceps strengthening and/or realignment procedures (tape, brace, stretching). These treatments appear to be based on sound theoretical rationale and have attained widespread acceptance, but evidence for the efficacy of these interventions is not well established. This review will present the available evidence for physical interven…

Isometric contractions in the patellofemoral pain syndrome. An electromyographic study.

The role played by the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis obliquus in their alignment of the patella during maximal isometric quadriceps contractions was studied by electromyography in 28 patients with unilateral symptoms of the patellofemoral pain syndrome. Eleven knees were classified as subluxation of the patella and 17 as idiopathic chondromalacia patellae. The muscular activity pattern was the same in the two groups but decreased as compared with the contralateral nonsymptomatic knees. However, none of the groups revealed differences in the activity of vastus lateralis and vastus medial…

An evaluation of the rearfoot posture in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Structural abnormalities of the foot may cause abnormal subtalar joint compensatory motion in order to attain normal function of the lower extremity during gait although studies have not been conclusive. Current conflict in the literature may be related to the differing measures focused on the varying protocols and also the absence of a control group in some studies. This study investigated the rearfoot posture including Subtalar Joint Neutral Position (STJN) and Relaxed Calcaneal Standing (RCS) measurements in patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and healthy subjects. The angle of STJN during …

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome Risk Associated with Squats: A Systematic Review.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is highly prevalent; it can cause severe pain and evolve into progressive functional loss, leading to difficulties performing daily tasks such as climbing and descending stairs and squatting. This systematic review aimed to find evidence, in the literature, of squat movements that can cause or worsen PFPS. This work was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement, and its protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019128711). From the 6570 collected records, 37 were included. From these 37 articles, 27 pr…

Diagnostic value of five clinical tests in patellofemoral pain syndrome.

The current study is aimed at examining the validity of five clinical patellofemoral tests used in the diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Forty-five knee patients were divided into either the PFPS or the non-PFPS group, based on the fulfilment of the diagnostic criteria for PFPS. An investigator, blinded to the group assignment, performed the vastus medialis coordination test, patellar apprehension test, Waldron's test, Clarke's test, and the eccentric step test. The positive likelihood ratio was 2.26 for both the vastus medialis coordination test and the patellar apprehension t…

The quality of YouTube videos related to patellofemoral pain syndrome is insufficient.

BACKGROUND: Videos uploaded to YouTube do not go through a review process. The educational aspect of these videos may be insufficient for patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFP). OBJECTIVE: To examine the reliability and educational quality of PFP videos on YouTube. METHODS: A standard search was performed in the YouTube database using the following terms: patellofemoral pain syndrome/anterior knee pain syndrome/anterior knee pain/patellofemoral pain. For each search term, the top 50 videos based on "relevance" assignment of YouTube's algorithm were included in the examination. The remaining 96 v…

Is Cam Pincer Deformity a Predisposing Factor for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome?

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). While SGLT2i are effective antidiabetic agents with cardiovascular and renal benefits, concerns remain about their impact on LUTS. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 47 patients with T2DM without organic urinary tract disease or autonomic neuropathy. The Overactive Bladder (OAB)-Validated 8-question (OAB-V8) questionnaire was administered at baseline and reasses

Patellofemoral pain syndrome assessed by Lysholm score, radiological and biorheometric measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of In this study was to verify the relationship among clinical indicators of patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and the results of modifying radiological investigation. Previous research suggests that there is a poor association between them. Therefore we have employed a technique for the functional evaluation of PFPS based on measuring the stiffness of the knee joint during passive flexion (biorheometry). METHOD: The correlation between clinical examination and a standardized Lysholm score, radiological and biorheometric measures was investigated in the 28 knee joints …

[Unsatisfactory long-term prognosis of conservative treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome].

This review overviews the long-term prognosis of conservatively treated patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Median values of the 16 included studies show that 29% of soldiers, 27.8% of sports active and 24,7% of the general public will become pain free after they are diagnosed with PFPS. 21.5% of sports active and 23% of the general public diagnosed with PFPS will stop participating in sports because of knee pain. There is an indication that around one third diagnosed with PFPS will become pain free and one fourth will stop participating in sports because of knee pain.

Knee-spine syndrome: correlation between sacral inclination and patellofemoral joint pain.

Low back pain is an enormous clinical and public health problem. When we use spinal instrumentation, measurements of spinal and leg alignment in the standing position are thought to be important. Knee joint pain has also become an enormous clinical problem in the increasing elderly population. However, the correlation between spinal alignment, particularly sacral inclination, and knee joint pain is not clear. We examined the correlation between lumbar lordosis, sacral inclination, and patellofemoral joint pain in elderly subjects. Three hundred and ninety-nine people aged 50-85 years were exam

Gait Retraining for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: A Biomechanical Approach to Pain Relief and Performance Optimization.

OBJECTIVE: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is common among runners and is linked to biomechanical dysfunctions that increase patellofemoral joint stress. Gait retraining has been proposed to redistribute this loading, but the effectiveness of different retraining strategies and their long-term impact remain unclear. This scoping review synthesizes existing evidence on gait retraining strategies for PFPS, focusing on pain, function, and biomechanics. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, Scopus, PEDro, and Web of Science were searched, following the methodological framework of the Joann…

Eccentric hip muscle function in females with and without patellofemoral pain syndrome.

CONTEXT: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common knee condition in athletes. Recently, researchers have indicated that factors proximal to the knee, including hip muscle weakness and motor control impairment, contribute to the development of PFPS. However, no investigators have evaluated eccentric hip muscle function in people with PFPS. OBJECTIVE: To compare the eccentric hip muscle function between females with PFPS and a female control group. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Musculoskeletal laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: two groups of females were studied: a …
