Paternal age at childbirth and eating disorders in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Advanced paternal age at childbirth is associated with psychiatric disorders in offspring, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism. However, few studies have investigated paternal age's relationship with eating disorders in offspring. In a large, population-based cohort, we examined the association between paternal age and offspring eating disorders, and whether that association remains after adjustment for potential confounders (e.g. parental education level) that may be related to late/early selection into fatherhood and to eating disorder incidence. METHOD: Data fo

Case-control analysis of paternal age and trisomic anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether older paternal age increases the risk of fathering a pregnancy with Patau (trisomy 13), Edwards (trisomy 18), Klinefelter (XXY) or XYY syndrome. DESIGN: Case-control: cases with each of these syndromes were matched to four controls with Down syndrome from within the same congenital anomaly register and with maternal age within 6 months. SETTING: Data from 22 EUROCAT congenital anomaly registers in 12 European countries. PARTICIPANTS: Diagnoses with observed or (for terminations) predicted year of birth from 1980 to 2005, comprising live births, fetal deaths

Paternal age and risk of schizophrenia in adult offspring.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the relation between paternal age at the time of birth and risk of schizophrenia in the adult offspring. METHOD: Data from the birth cohort of the Prenatal Determinants of Schizophrenia study were used in this study. Virtually all members of this birth cohort had prospective information about paternal age at the time of the offspring's birth. Subjects with schizophrenia and other schizophrenia spectrum disorders (N=71) among members of this birth cohort were previously ascertained. In separate analyses, paternal age was modeled as a continuous variable and as a c

Paternal age and the risk of congenital heart defects.

The effect of paternal age on the risk of birth defects among offspring is less well studied than the effect of maternal age, with few comprehensive epidemiologic studies having been conducted. Advanced paternal age has been shown to be associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that result in particular congenital anomalies. The relationship between paternal age and more common birth defects, for example, cardiac defects, has not been as extensively evaluated. Therefore, a total of 4,110 cases of congenital heart defects was identified from the British Columbia Health Surveillance

Later paternal age and sex differences in schizophrenia symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced paternal age is consistently associated with an increased risk for schizophrenia, accounting for up to a quarter of cases in some populations. If paternal age-related schizophrenia (PARS) involves a distinct etiopathology, then PARS cases may show specific characteristics, vis-à-vis other schizophrenia cases. This study examined if PARS exhibits the symptom profile and sex differences that are consistently observed for schizophrenia in general, wherein males have an earlier onset age and more severe negative symptoms than females. METHOD: Symptoms were assessed at baseline

Reduced recombination and paternal age effect in Klinefelter syndrome.

The parental origin of the additional sex chromosome was studied in 47 cases with an XXY sex chromosome constitution. In 23 cases (49%), the error occurred during the first paternal meiotic division. Maternal origin of the additional chromosome was found in the remaining 24 cases (51%). Centromeric homo- versus heterozygosity could be determined in 18 out of the 24 maternally derived cases. According to the centromeric status and recombination rate, the nondisjunction was attributable in 9 cases (50%) to an error at the first maternal meiotic division, in 7 cases (39%) to an error at the secon

SALL1 mutations in sporadic Townes-Brocks syndrome are of predominantly paternal origin without obvious paternal age effect.

Autosomal dominant Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is characterized by imperforate anus, triphalangeal and supernumerary thumbs, dysplastic ears and sensorineural hearing loss, and may also involve other organ systems. Strong inter- and intrafamiliar variability is known. Approximately 50% of TBS cases are sporadic and due to de novo mutations in the SALL1 gene. SALL1 encodes a zinc finger protein operating as a transcriptional repressor and localizing to pericentromeric heterochromatin. We traced the parental origin of SALL1 mutations in sporadic TBS by analysis of linkage between SALL1 mutation

Is advanced paternal age a health risk for the offspring?

In this article we review the epidemiologic evidence for adverse health effects in offspring of fathers of advanced age. First the evidence regarding fetal survival is addressed, and afterward we review the evidence regarding morbidity in children with older fathers. The adverse conditions most consistently associated with increased paternal age are stillbirths, musculo-skeletal syndromes, cleft palate, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and retinoblastoma, and neurodevelopmental disorders in the autism spectrum and schizophrenia. Finally, we consider the public health impact of the increasing pater

[The value of paternal age on the outcome of intrauterine insemination].

BACKGROUND: Although age to conceive has been delayed in both males and females, male age is controversial as decisive for this purpose. OBJECTIVE: To describe the results of intrauterine insemination pregnancy according to the age of the man. To determine whether this variable modifies semen parameters. To analyze whether pregnancy outcomes are modified by sperm morphology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal and analytical study. We analyzed 2,276 intrauterine insemination cycles performed in the Mexican Center for Fertility CEPAM from January 2000 to December

Influence of paternal age on the risk of spontaneous abortion.

The frequency of chromosomal anomalies in spermatozoa appears to increase with male age. Because these anomalies play a role in the etiology of spontaneous abortion, an influence of paternal age on risk of spontaneous abortion is plausible but not established. The aim was to characterize this influence in a prospective study among 5,121 California women, who as members of a prepaid health plan were interviewed in 1990 or 1991 when they were less than 13 weeks' pregnant and who were followed until the end of pregnancy. The risk of spontaneous abortion between weeks 6 and 20 of pregnancy was stu

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in Norway.

PURPOSE: We studied 1,869,388 births from The Medical Birth Registry of Norway to assess the effect of father's age on risks of birth defects in offspring. METHOD: Thirteen separate categories were studied including pooled categories of neural tube defects and any type of defect. We used logistic regression models to adjust for maternal age, year of birth, maternity institution, parity, and correlation between siblings. RESULTS: There was little evidence of increased risk by high paternal age for any category of defects, except for a category of "other central nervous system" where risk esti

Paternal age and the risk of birth defects in offspring.

Previous studies have shown that advanced paternal age is associated with an increase in new dominant mutations that may result in some rare congenital anomalies or syndromes in the offspring. Nevertheless, few epidemiologic studies have evaluated the effect of paternal age on the risk of more common birth defects. We examined data from the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry, which included a total of 9,660 cases of birth defects (22 specific defect groups). We chose matched controls from the birth files of British Columbia (1952-1973). With the exception of an unusual change in dir

Shared Death Anxiety: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Advanced Paternal Age.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often emerges during childhood, presenting as distressing obsessions and compulsions that interfere with daily functioning. Advanced paternal age (APA) introduces unique psychosocial dynamics within families, potentially exacerbating stress, anxiety, and intergenerational emotional challenges. This case report examines the presentation of OCD in a 10-year-old boy, characterized by pervasive death anxiety shared with his 83-year-old father, whose advanced age intensifies existential concerns. The report delves into the complex interplay between APA, the child

Paternal incarceration and child-reported behavioral functioning at age 9.

Within the last few decades our understanding of the importance of non-cognitive skills for socioeconomic success has grown along with our knowledge of the deleterious impacts of paternal incarceration for child wellbeing. Given the importance of early skills and that elementary-aged children constitute the majority of children with incarcerated parents, understanding the connection between paternal incarceration and the socio-emotional component of children's non-cognitive development is pressing. Using matching models, data from the newest wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Stu

Paternal age at childbearing and offspring psychiatric and academic morbidity.

IMPORTANCE: Advancing paternal age is associated with increased genetic mutations during spermatogenesis, which research suggests may cause psychiatric morbidity in the offspring. The effects of advancing paternal age at childbearing on offspring morbidity remain unclear, however, because of inconsistent epidemiologic findings and the inability of previous studies to rigorously rule out confounding factors. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between advancing paternal age at childbearing and numerous indexes of offspring morbidity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We performed a popula

Association of paternal age with prevalence of selected birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Unlike maternal age, the effect of paternal age on birth defect prevalence has not been well examined. We used cases from the Texas birth defect registry, born during 1996-2002, to evaluate the association of paternal age with the prevalence of selected structural birth defects. METHODS: Poisson regression was used to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with paternal age for each birth defect, adjusting for maternal age, race/ethnicity, and parity. RESULTS: Relative to fathers ages 25-29 years, fathers 20-24 years of age were more likel

Advancing paternal age: Effects on sperm quality and offspring health.

BACKGROUND: Over recent decades, socioeconomic and cultural changes have led to a progressive increase in paternal age at conception, prompting growing concern regarding its potential effects on male reproductive function, pregnancy outcomes, and offspring health. In contrast to the extensive literature on female reproductive aging, the biological and clinical consequences of paternal aging have received less attention. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review summarizes and critically discusses current evidence on the impact of advanced paternal age on conventional and biofunctional sperm parameters

Paternal age and neonatal outcomes: a population-based cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is paternal age associated with neonatal outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER: Paternal age is independently associated with preterm birth (PTB) and caesarean section. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Advanced maternal age has long been recognized as a major risk factor for adverse neonatal outcomes. However, the association between paternal age and neonatal outcomes are not well established, yet it is biologically plausible that an increasing number of genetic and epigenetic sperm abnormalities in older males may contribute to adverse neonatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION: This populatio

Male biological clock: a critical analysis of advanced paternal age.

Extensive research defines the impact of advanced maternal age on couples' fecundity and reproductive outcomes, but significantly less research has been focused on understanding the impact of advanced paternal age. Yet it is increasingly common for couples at advanced ages to conceive children. Limited research suggests that the importance of paternal age is significantly less than that of maternal age, but advanced age of the father is implicated in a variety of conditions affecting the offspring. This review examines three aspects of advanced paternal age: the potential problems with concept
