Infant Mortality Rates of Non-Hispanic White and African-American Term Births: The Effect of Acknowledged Fathers' Education.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent to which acknowledged fathers' education attainment is associated with the infant mortality rate of term births to African-American and non-Hispanic White women. We hypothesized that African American (compared to non-Hispanic White) term births would have a greater percentage of first-year deaths attributable to low paternal education attainment. METHODS: Stratified and multivariable regression analyses were performed on the 2018-2019 National Center for Health Statistics US cohort-linked live birth-infant death data files. Only term (37-42 weeks) singleton

A genomic imprinting defect in mice traced to a single gene.

Mammalian androgenones have two paternally or sperm-derived genomes. In mice (Mus musculus) they die at peri-implantation due to the misexpression of imprinted genes-the genes that are expressed monoallelically according to the parent of origin. The misexpressions involved are poorly defined. To gain further insight, we examined the causes of midgestation death of embryos with paternal duplication (PatDp) of distal chromosome 7 (dist7), a region replete with imprinted genes. PatDp(dist7) embryos have a similar phenotype to mice with a knockout of a maternally expressed imprinted gene, Ascl2 [a

Paternal inheritance predicts earlier cardiovascular event onset in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disease, with an autosomal codominant inheritance, predisposing to premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Paternal or maternal inheritance of the FH-causing mutation may affect the FH phenotype in offspring, but the effect of the genetic transmission on cardiovascular disease risk remains to be established. The aim of the present study is to compare the incidence of cardiovascular events between patients with maternal vs paternal inheritance of familial hypercholesterolemia. METHODS: We prospectively studi

Number of siblings and psychotropic medication purchases surrounding parental death in adulthood: a population-wide cohort study in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Parental death has well-established adverse effects on the mental health of children and adolescents, but evidence on adults is scarce. Also, the role of siblings has not been assessed before, even though siblings might be an important source of support during parental death. METHODS: We conducted a national cohort study to examine psychotropic medication purchases (antidepressants, anxiolytics, hypnotics and sedatives) before and after parental death and assessed differences by sibship size and sex of the offspring. We estimated annual probabilities of psychotropic medication pur

The risks of advancing parental age on neonatal morbidity and mortality are U- or J-shaped for both maternal and paternal ages.

BACKGROUND: The biologic implications of delayed parenthood have been blamed for a major public health crisis in the United States, that includes high rates of neonatal morbidity and mortality (NMM). The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of parent age on NMM and to provide results that can serve as a starting point for more specific mediation modeling. METHODS: Data containing approximately 15,000,000 birth records were obtained from the United States Natality database for the years 2014 to 2018. A Bayesian modeling approach was used to estimate the both the total effect and th

Paternal age and neonatal outcomes: a population-based cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is paternal age associated with neonatal outcomes? SUMMARY ANSWER: Paternal age is independently associated with preterm birth (PTB) and caesarean section. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Advanced maternal age has long been recognized as a major risk factor for adverse neonatal outcomes. However, the association between paternal age and neonatal outcomes are not well established, yet it is biologically plausible that an increasing number of genetic and epigenetic sperm abnormalities in older males may contribute to adverse neonatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION: This populatio

Mouse embryos with paternal duplication of an imprinted chromosome 7 region die at midgestation and lack placental spongiotrophoblast.

Imprinted genomic regions have been defined by the production of mice with uniparental inheritance or duplication of homologous chromosome regions. With most of the genome investigated, paternal duplication of only distal chromosomes 7 and 12 results in the lack of offspring, and prenatal lethality is presumed. Aberrant expression of imprinted genes in these two autosomal regions is therefore strongly implicated in the periimplantation lethality of androgenetic embryos. We report that mouse embryos with paternal duplication of distal chromosome 7 (PatDup.d7) die at midgestation and lack placen

A New Inherited Syndrome Causing Sudden Cardiac Death with Distinct ST-Segment Depression and Ankyrin-2-Mutation.

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a serious threat. In individuals under the age of 35 years sudden arrhythmic death is the most frequent cause. In younger persons, genetically determined cardiac diseases (eg, cardiomyopathies and ion-channel diseases) account for an important proportion of these cases. METHODS: We investigated the case of a 23-year-old male with SCD, specific ECG changes and left ventricular hypertrophy. Family history was significant for SCD in the paternal line. A precise analysis was performed by an international multidisciplinary expert panel including autopsy

Maternal and paternal factors associated with congenital syphilis in Shenzhen, China: a prospective cohort study.

Maternal and paternal factors create considerable obstacles to the elimination of congenital syphilis (CS). A clear understanding of maternal and paternal factors is important in order to define interventions in every community. This study aimed to investigate the maternal and paternal factors associated with CS. A prospective cohort study was conducted from April 25, 2007 to October 31, 2012 at the Shenzhen Center for Chronic Disease Control and Prevention (SCCDC) in China. We screened 279,334 pregnant women and identified 838 women with syphilis. Finally, a total of 360 women with syphilis w

Immunologic and neuroendocrine interactions in pregnancy.

The neuroendocrine system helps in the success of the fetal graft by suppressing maternal cellular immune response against the foreign paternal histocompatibility (HLA) antigens. In addition, placenta absorbs the antibodies directed against the paternal HLA antigens, thus inhibiting the humoral rejection of the fetal graft. In contrast, neuropeptides released in the maternal blood stream under adverse mental states may stimulate lymphocyte blastogenesis and natural killer (NK) cell activity resulting in premature loss of the fetus. Further, homozygosity of a lethal gene which is in linkage dis

Paternal Filicide and Chronic Child Abuse: An Autopsy Case.

Paternal filicide is the deliberate killing of one's child by the father. It is a rare form of homicide that is complex and disturbing, as it might involve child domestic violence in its course. It reflects on the underlying psychodynamic and socio-economic stressors. We report a case of a paternal filicide by smothering involving a 4-year-old male child, associated with chronic child abuse. Autopsy examination revealed bluish discolouration of the nail beds, multiple abrasions and contusions present over the bilateral cheeks, nose, lips, submandibular region, right lateral aspect of the body,

Maternal and paternal filicides: a retrospective review of filicides in Finland.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to illustrate the differences in maternal and paternal filicides in Finland during a 25-year period. In the sample of 200 filicides [neonaticides (n = 56), filicide-suicides (n = 75), other filicides (n = 69)], the incidence was 5.09 deaths per 100,000 live births: 59 percent of filicides were committed by mothers, 39 percent by fathers, and 2 percent by stepfathers. The mean age of the maternal victims (1.6 y) was significantly lower than that of the paternal victims (5.6 y), but no correlation between the sex of the victim and the sex of the perpet

KIL transcription factors facilitate embryo growth in maize by promoting endosperm elimination via lytic cell death.

The endosperm is a transient nutritive tissue in plant seeds. During maize (Zea mays) grain development, 2 distinct endosperm cell death processes occur: in 1 process, the endosperm adjacent to the embryo scutellum (EAS) is completely dismantled; in the other, the starchy endosperm (SE) retains nutrient-packed cell corpses after grain filling. Here, we show that SE cell death degrades some organelles including the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, while preserving protein bodies, starch granules, and chromatin. In contrast, EAS cells undergo lytic cell death to remobilize stored nutr

Molecular pathology in forensic medicine--Introduction.

Techniques of molecular biology have improved diagnostic sensitivity, accuracy and validity in forensic medicine very much, especially in the field of identification (paternity testing, stain analysis). Since more than 10 years these techniques - meanwhile well established in clinical disciplines - are used also for other applications in forensic medicine: determination of cause and manner of death, tissue identification by mRNA and microRNA, examination of gene expression levels (survival time, time since death, cause of death), toxicogenetics.

Type 2 diabetes and maternal family history: an impact beyond slow glucose removal rate and fasting hyperglycemia in low-risk individuals? Results from 22.5 years of follow-up of healthy nondiabetic men.

OBJECTIVE: Although an excess transmission of type 2 diabetes from mothers has been documented, whether this is an independent trait or whether the effect can be detected early through risk factors for type 2 diabetes remains to be elucidated. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and the possible prospective effect of family history on type 2 diabetes incidence adjusted for multiple diabetes risk factors in a 22.5-year follow-up study of healthy men. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 1,947 apparently healthy nondiabetic men with fasting blood glucose (FBG) le
