Nontransitivity of paternity in a bird.

In many animals reproductive success is determined after insemination by the interaction of male and female processes. While sperm competition is reasonably well understood in some taxa, other processes, such as cryptic female choice and differential early embryo mortality resulting from genetic incompatibilities, are less well understood. The relative importance of these different factors contributing to reproductive success is difficult to assess. Here we control for male-mediated effects (which are often considerable and can mask more subtle processes) through the artificial insemination of

Paternal exposure not to blame.

The "Gardner hypothesis" suggests that an excess of childhood leukaemia near a nuclear reprocessing plant is caused by paternal exposure to ionizing radiation. But the evidence shows that this explanation is wrong.

Paternal behavioral mutagenesis.

Cocaine hydrochloride (0 to 30 mg/kg, s.c.) was administered daily for a minimum of 72 days to Long Evans rats. Animals receiving the lower doses were pair fed to animals receiving the higher dose. Males were bred to untreated females. Paternal cocaine administration did not affect litter size, birth weight, or weight at weaning, but did result in offspring hyperactivity. A similar study was conducted for paternal alcohol consumption in Long Evans rats. Males consumed alcohol (35%, 17.5% or 0% ethanol derived calories) for 8 to 9 weeks and were then bred to untreated females. Males consuming t

Paternal occupation and anencephaly.

It has been suggested that paternal occupational exposures to pesticides and solvents increase the risk of neural tube defects in offspring. With the use of Texas livebirth, fetal death, and linked livebirth-death records, the authors conducted a population-based case-control study among 1981-1986 Texas births to examine the association between paternal occupation and anencephalic births. Fathers employed in occupations associated with solvent exposure were more likely to have offspring with anencephaly (odds ratio (OR) = 2.53), with painters having the highest risk (OR = 3.43). A lesser assoc

The paternal clock: Uncovering the consequences of advanced paternal age on sperm DNA fragmentation.

The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between advanced paternal age and sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) levels, specifically identifying the age at which a significant increase in SDF occurs. This is a retrospective cohort study involving 4250 consecutive semen samples from patients presenting for infertility evaluation. Patients were stratified into seven age groups: < 26 (n = 36; 0.8 %), 26-30 (n = 500; 11.8 %), 31-35 (n = 1269; 29.9 %), 36-40 (n = 1268; 29.8 %), 41-45 (n = 732; 17.2 %), 46-50 (n = 304; 7.2 %), > 50 (n = 141; 3.3 %). Paternity in male kidney transplant recipients: a French national survey, the PATeRNAL study.

BACKGROUND: There is concern about the impact of immunosuppressive agents taken by male kidney transplant (KT) recipients on the risk of foetal malformations. The aim of our survey was to estimate the paternity rate and the outcomes of pregnancies fathered by kidney transplanted males. METHODS: This survey analysed 1332 male KT recipients older than 18 years, followed in 13 centres in France. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data on the patients, treatments at the time of conception and the pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS: The study included data on 349 children from 404 pregnan

Paternal Breastfeeding Involvement, Paternal-Infant Attachment, and Breastfeeding Outcomes: A Prospective Cohort Study.

RESEARCH AIM: To examine the relationship between paternal breastfeeding involvement and paternal-infant attachment with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and total breastfeeding duration. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included fathers of 1-month-old infants recruited through convenience sampling. Paternal breastfeeding involvement was assessed using the Partner Breastfeeding Influence Scale (PBIS). Paternal-infant attachment, paternal depressive symptoms, and marital adjustment were evaluated using validated instruments. Assessments were conducted at 1, 6, and 12 months po

Paternal loss (pal): a meiotic mutant in Drosophila melanogaster causing loss of paternal chromosomes.

The effects of a male-specific meiotic mutant, paternal los (pal), in D. melanogaster have been examined genetically. The results indicate the following: (1) When homozygous in males, pal can cause loss, but not nondisjunction, of any chromosome pair. The pal-induced chromosome loss produces exceptional progeny that apparently failed to receive one, or more, paternal chromosomes and, in addition, mosaic progeny during whose early mitotic divisions one or more paternal chromosomes were lost. (2) Only paternally derived chromosomes are lost. (3) Mitotic chromosome loss can occur in homozygous pa

Welfare paternalism and the paradox of protection: towards a rights-based framework to mediate the deprivation of liberty of children.

This article examines the acute ambiguity in the law governing the deprivation of liberty of children in England and Wales, where protective interventions often rely on judicial direction and on unclear statutory safeguards. It is argued that the current framework is reactive, welfare-driven, and lacking in procedural coherence. Drawing upon Fineman's theory of vulnerability, Fraser's parity of participation, and Lundy's analysis of children's agency in relation to the participatory guarantees of Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the article reconceptualiz

Dynamics and inheritance of the paternal epigenome.

During plant sexual reproduction, the paternal epigenome is remodelled as it progresses from meiocyte to sperm cell and, after fertilization, to the zygote. In flowering plants, sperm cells retain a condensed chromatin state, specialized histone variants and a relatively stable DNA methylation landscape, whereas the companion vegetative cell undergoes chromatin decondensation, DNA demethylation and transposon reactivation. These contrasting epigenetic states are associated with small RNA production and reinforce genome integrity in the male germline. Following fertilization, sperm-specific his

The paternal role in pregnancy loss.

In this comprehensive review, the intricate relationship between paternal factors and pregnancy loss is examined. While pregnancy loss has historically been predominantly attributed to maternal factors, recent research underscores the significant contribution of the male partner. The review delves into various aspects of paternal influence, including paternal age, health, chromosome abnormalities, Y chromosome deletions, and sperm DNA fragmentation. Notably, advanced paternal age is found to be associated with an increased risk of recurrent pregnancy loss, shedding light on the importance of u

Paternal effects on fetal programming.

Paternal programming is the concept that the environmental signals from the sire's experiences leading up to mating can alter semen and ultimately affect the phenotype of resulting offspring. Potential mechanisms carrying the paternal effects to offspring can be associated with epigenetic signatures (DNA methylation, histone modification and non-coding RNAs), oxidative stress, cytokines, and the seminal microbiome. Several opportunities exist for sperm/semen to be influenced during development; these opportunities are within the testicle, the epididymis, or accessory sex glands. Epigenetic sig

Paternal perinatal depression: cases.

For many years there has been a debate among psychiatrists as to whether and how the patient's gender modifies the psychopathological picture of depression. Despite many years of research on trigger mechanisms, clinical features and the consequences of perinatal depression in women, one can still get the impression that too little is known about this mental disorder in the perinatal period in women. As for men, there are only few reports showing the consequences of paternal depression for the physical and emotional development of a newborn child. The article describes several cases of male pat

[Extrapair paternity in Parus major].

Mating systems, as an evolutionary stable strategy, play an important role in animal reproductive process and result from an animal's adaption to their environment, including their inter-specific environment. In the 1980s, extrapair paternity (EPP) was first noted in the eurychoric species, the Great Tit, Parus major. As earlier studies indicated, morphology, physiology, behavior, ecological characteristics and mating systems of eurychoric species differ greatly between areas or populations. Accordingly, we analyzed the mating system of the Great Tit (P.m.minor) in Fairy Cave National Nature R

Is there a paternal age effect for aneuploidy?

Finding a positive association between paternal age and the incidence of aneuploidy is not difficult. A cursory analysis however reveals that any association is indirect, brought about by a close correlation between paternal age and maternal age. Approaches for dissecting out the confounding age effects of the mother has led to a lively exchange among epidemiologists, with perhaps a consensus for the absence of a paternal age effect, at least for trisomy 21. Molecular studies revealed the relatively minor contribution of paternal errors to trisomy, but even research on the paternally derived t

Paternal age and spontaneous abortion.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of paternal age upon spontaneous abortion. METHODS: This case-control study of 13,865 women draws on data from women's antenatal or postpartum interviews in the Jerusalem Perinatal Study, a population-based cohort derived from 92,408 births in 1964-1976. Case women (n=1,506) reported spontaneous abortion in the pregnancy preceding the interview; they were compared with women reporting live births in their previous pregnancy (n=12,359). Logistic regression was used to adjust for maternal age, maternal diabetes, maternal smoking, history of spontaneous abort
