Paternity bias and cryptic female choice in chickens.

Sperm competition and cryptic female choice (CFC) are 2 significant mechanisms of postcopulatory sexual selection that greatly impact fertilization success in various species. Despite extensive research has conducted on sperm competition and the evolution of sperm traits in internal fertilization, our understanding of the female preferences in selecting sperm is still limited. Here, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of CFC in chickens by utilizing artificial insemination with mixed semen to control for variations in male fertilization success caused by female perception of male quali

Change in paternity and recurrence of hyperemesis gravidarum.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether change in paternity changes recurrence risk of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). STUDY DESIGN: Survey data on recurrence of HG was compared between cases who had a paternity change between pregnancies and cases who did not. RESULTS: The percentage of HG pregnancies in women with the same partner for all pregnancies was not significantly different from the percentage of HG pregnancies in women who changed partners for at least one pregnancy (78% vs 71%, p > 0.05). Participants who did and did not change partners between their first and second pregnancies, were asked

Novel risk factor in gastroschisis: change of paternity.

In recent years, an increase in the rate of gastroschisis has been documented in several countries throughout the world. Based on accumulating evidence that a maternal immunologic response to a novel set of paternal antigens may be involved in risk for several adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia, reduced birth weight, and preterm delivery, we tested the hypothesis that a pregnancy following a change in fathers (change in paternity) may be a risk factor for gastroschisis. Using a case-control design, we compared the prevalence of change in paternity with the index pregnancy in 10

Determining paternity before DNA - the significance of pregnancy duration.

BACKGROUND: Questions concerning paternity have been of major interest over the centuries. Issues such as legitimacy, fidelity, inheritance and child maintenance have been central. Maternity was unequivocal, but paternity could be uncertain. A key issue in paternity cases was whether the mother's account of sexual intercourse was consistent with the timing of the birth. This required an understanding of the possible duration of pregnancy. We examined how law and forensic medicine assessed the significance of pregnancy duration in establishing paternity throughout the 20th century. MATERIAL AN

The single testis: paternity after presentation as unilateral cryptorchidism.

PURPOSE: We determine if paternity is reduced among men with monorchidism (absent or removed testis) compared to men with unilateral cryptorchidism corrected during childhood by orchiopexy and controls. The group of men with an absent testis was determined among males presenting during childhood with only 1 descended testis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained by medical record review and a detailed questionnaire. Only men who had been successful at or attempted paternity for whom we had complete data were included in the study from the entire cohort of 584 men with former cryptorchidis

An epidemiologic study of paternity after cryptorchidism: initial results.

Paternity has been studied among married men who were formerly cryptorchid. Forty-one of 52 formerly unilateral cryptorchid men were married, 10 of 11 bilaterally cryptorchid and 36 of 42 control men. Thirty-two of the 41 of the unilateral group (78%) had fathered children, 6 of 10 in the bilateral group (60%) and 24 of 36 controls (67%). These limited data from the initial phase of this study of paternity after cryptorchidism do not show any correlation between paternity or time of unprotected intercourse to conception and age of surgery or pretreatment testicular size or location. However, t

Competence and paternalism.

Some bioethicists have argued in favor of a sliding scale notion of competence, paternalistically requiring greater competence in relation to more significant risk. I argue against a sliding scale notion, taking issue with the positions of Allen E. Buchanan and Dan W. Brock, Ian Wilkes, and Joel Feinberg. Rejecting arguments that a sliding scale is supported by legal cases, by ordinary usage, and by fallible judgments about competence, I argue in favor of greater evidence of competence when risk is greater. Two clinical cases are examined, both involving amputation, to show that my fixed conce

Paternal hyperphenylalaninemia.

In an article published in 1981 that reported on semen studies in four men with phenylketonuria (PKU), it was concluded that semen volumes were significantly reduced. However, the index case should not have been included in the statistical analyses. In the other three cases, the men with PKU had smaller semen volumes than did the four control medical students. The significance of these data depends upon the subjects' reliability in accurately reporting abstinence from ejaculation during the preceding four days. Significant differences were not found in sperm count per milliliter, total sperm c

Mating dynamics and multiple paternity in a long-lived vertebrate.

Multiple paternity is relatively common across diverse taxa; however, the drivers and implications related to paternal and maternal fitness are not well understood. Several hypotheses have been offered to explain the occurrence and frequency of multiple paternity. One set of hypotheses seeks to explain multiple paternity through direct and indirect benefits including increased genetic diversity or enhanced offspring fitness, whereas another set of hypotheses explains multiple paternity as a by-product of sexual conflict and population-specific parameters such as density. Here, we investigate m

The making and breaking of paternity secrets in donor insemination.

This paper analyses the complex issues faced by regulators of the infertility treatment industry in response to the social and technological changes that heralded a new openness in knowledge about genetics, paternity and the concomitant need for donor offspring to know their genetic origins. The imperative for full information about their donor and biological father, who contributed to their creation and half of their genome, was an outcome unanticipated by the architects of the donor insemination programme. Genetic paternity testing realised the possibility of fixed and certain knowledge abou

Possible pitfalls in motherless paternity analysis with related putative fathers.

Nowadays, more and more paternity cases are carried out investigating only child and putative father, mostly for economical or private reasons. Usually, reliable results can be obtained and the putative father can be included or ruled out with a high certainty. Considerable problems might arise when a relative of the biological father is investigated as being the putative father. In this study, we investigated 164 persons from 27 families creating artificial deficiency cases using the AmpFlSTRIdentifiler kit, which amplifies 15 STRs simultaneously. We analyzed 93 child/biological father pairs

Abortion, changed paternity, and risk of preeclampsia in nulliparous women.

A prior birth confers a strong protective effect against preeclampsia, whereas a prior abortion confers a weaker protective effect. Parous women who change partners in a subsequent pregnancy appear to lose the protective effect of a prior birth. This study (Calcium for Preeclampsia Prevention Trial, 1992-1995) examines whether nulliparous women with a prior abortion who change partners also lose the protective effect of the prior pregnancy. A cohort analysis was conducted among participants in this large clinical trial of calcium supplementation to prevent preeclampsia. Subjects were nulliparo

Adverse childhood experiences and risk of paternity in teen pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated risk factors that predispose males to be involved in teen pregnancies. To provide new information on such factors, we examined the relationships of eight common adverse childhood experiences to a male's risk of impregnating a teenager. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using questionnaire responses from 7399 men who visited a primary care clinic of a large health maintenance organization in California. Data included age of the youngest female ever impregnated; the man's own age at the time; his history of childhood emotional, physical,

Paternity after cryptorchidism: lack of correlation with age at orchidopexy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether paternity is decreased among men who were formerly unilaterally or bilaterally cryptorchid and to ascertain whether paternity is related to their age at orchidopexy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Men who underwent orchidopexy between 1955 and 1969 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (363) and a group of age-matched control men (336) were surveyed by questionnaire and their medical records reviewed. RESULTS: Of the married men, significantly more of the unilateral cryptorchid (75%) and control (76%) groups had fathered children than had the bilateral cryptorchid g

Relationship between paternal factors and embryonic aneuploidy of paternal origin.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is a relationship between paternal factors and embryonic aneuploidy of paternal origin using preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. SETTING: Academic. PARTICIPANTS: Couples undergoing in vitro fertilization with PGT-A. INTERVENTIONS: None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: To determine if there is an association between paternal age, body mass index (BMI), or semen analysis parameters and paternal aneuploidy. RESULTS: From January 2015-2020, 453 in vitro fertilization cycles (1,720 embryos) underwent PGT-A using single n

Paternal Age, Paternal Presence and Children's Health: An Observational Study.

In an observational study of 31,257 children we investigated the effects of paternal age at the time of the child's birth, paternal absence and non-biological fathers on children's health. Results are per 5 year change in paternal age. Older fathers were associated with lower rates of unintentional injuries, odds ratio (OR)=0.966, P=0.0027. There was a quadratic association between paternal age and risk of hospital admission, β=0.0121, P=0.0109, with minimum risk at paternal age 37.7. Absent fathers were associated with increased risk of hospital admission, OR=1.19, P<10(-3), lower rates of co
