Grocery Delivery to Support Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes: Protocol for a Pilot Quality Improvement Program.

BACKGROUND: People with low income are disproportionately affected by type 2 diabetes (T2D), and 17.6% of US adults with T2D experience food insecurity and low diet quality. Low-carbohydrate eating plans can improve glycemic control, promote weight loss, and are associated with improved cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality. Little is known about supporting low-carbohydrate eating for people with T2D, although food-as-medicine interventions paired with nutrition education offer a promising solution. OBJECTIVE: This program aims to support the initiation of dietary changes by using gr

On a form of chronic tendovaginitis by Dr. Fritz de Quervain in la Chaux-de-Fonds. 1895.

This paper represents the first English translation of the original article "On A Form Of Chronic Tendovaginitis" by Fritz de Quervain, published in 1895. This classic paper describes the natural history, symptomatology, pathology, and etiology of stenosing tenovaginitis of the first dorsal compartment (de Quervain's tenosynovitis). Dr. de Quervain also discusses the differential diagnosis for this disorder, his approach to management of the problem, and the results of surgical treatment in this series of collected patients. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of trigger digits. In add

Information systems and audit in antenatal care.

The obstetric record as initiated at the antenatal booking clinic essentially identifies the degree of risk engendered in that pregnancy so that consequent obstetric and paediatric management is tailored appropriately. Whether carried by the patient or based in the hospital with a summary carried by the patient (shared-care card), this record should be exhaustive, the emphasis being on quality, not quantity, of information recorded. To obviate human error in history-taking, patient management or record transcription, we believe on-line computerization of patient records with spin-off paperwork

Using Text Messaging Surveys in General Practice Research to Engage With People From Low-Income Groups: Multi-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: SMS text messages through mobile phones are a common means of interpersonal communication. SMS text message surveys are gaining traction in health care and research due to their feasibility and patient acceptability. However, challenges arise in implementing SMS text message surveys, especially when targeting marginalized populations, because of barriers to accessing phones and data as well as communication difficulties. In primary care, traditional surveys (paper-based and online) often face low response rates that are particularly pronounced among disadvantaged groups due to fina

The Cost and Financial Burden of Thyroid Cancer on Patients in the US: A Review and Directions for Future Research.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, thyroid cancer has been identified as a cancer type with a high degree of associated financial burden on patients, and survivors of thyroid cancer report higher rates of bankruptcy than those of other cancer types. However, the available literature on the financial burden of thyroid cancer has not yet been described. OBSERVATIONS: Estimates of the out-of-pocket costs of initial thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment range widely ($1425-$17 000) and are influenced by age, surgical treatment type, and health insurance coverage. The rates of patient-reported financial burd

Review of current ECG consumer electronics (pros and cons).

BACKGROUND: Several wearable, medical-grade consumer ECG devices are now available and integrated into consumer electronics like multi sensor fitness watches and scales. Specific consumer ECGs can also come in the form of patches or thin sensor plates in credit card or other shapes. Watches with ECG capabilities are often multi vital sign sensor devices. The majority of these devices are usually connected to a mobile smartphone. However, there are pros and cons to their use. METHODS: We review here an exemplary selection of modern consumer ECG devices based on device type, recording method an

Increased Medical Debt in Collections 1 Year After Emergency General Surgery Admission.

BACKGROUND: Emergency general surgery (EGS) conditions account for 4 million unplanned hospital admissions annually, but whether these acute, usually curable conditions are associated with lasting medical debt is unknown. We hypothesized that post-EGS increases in medical debt would be more strongly associated with patient demographics than treatment factors. STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated 4,216 adults admitted for appendicitis, gallbladder disease, small bowel obstruction, or emergency laparotomy in a statewide EGS collaborative (April 2020-June 2021), linking clinical registry data to quarterly

Measuring distance from lowest boundary of rectal tumor to anal verge on CT images using pyramid attention pooling transformer.

Accurately measuring the Distance from the lowest boundary of rectal tumor To the Anal Verge (DTAV) is critical for developing optimal surgical plans for treating patients with rectal cancer. DTAV was traditionally estimated by colonoscopy or manual measurement on computed tomography (CT) images. However, colonoscopy brings substantial pains to the patient. As for manual measurement on CT images, it is time-consuming and its accuracy depends on the surgeon's expertise. In this work, we present a novel method for automatically measuring DTAV from sagittal CT images. The success of our method is

To refine the 23-item chronic Hepatitis B quality of life instrument (CHBQOL) using the modified Delphi method and Rasch model analysis, this study conducted a secondary data analysis on 578 chronic Hepatitis B (CHB) patients. The preliminary evaluation of the item's importance of the original CHBQOL and the final review of the short form of CHBQOL (CHBQOL-SF) were collected by the Delphi method. A bi-factor model was estimated and Rasch analysis with partial credit model was performed on each domain of the CHBQOL. Six items were suggested to remove based on the Delphi results. The fit of the

The Early Landscape of Gender Affirmation Surgery in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Gender affirmation surgeries (GASs) are procedures that help patients align their body and gender identity. European surgeons are widely credited with pioneering GAS surgical techniques in the 1930s, whereas knowledge of GAS in the United States (US) prior to the 1960s is sparser. This study explores the early leaders, techniques, and obstacles encountered by physicians performing GAS in the US in the 1950s to 1970s. METHODS: Archives from the Harry Benjamin Collection and Elmer Belt Papers were reviewed for patient, physician, and operative details. RESULTS: A total of 39 physic
