Patient preference of integrated total pelvic floor ultrasound versus defaecatory proctography.

AIM: Pelvic floor defaecatory dysfunction is traditionally investigated with defaecatory proctography, which examines rectocele, enterocele, intussusception and functional aspects including dyssynergy and completeness of evacuation. Integrated total pelvic floor ultrasound offers a means to investigate these anatomical features as well as muscle co-ordination and propulsion, without the requirement of rectal contrast expulsion on a commode. We explore patient preference for each procedure. METHOD: A prospective study was taken of women who had undergone both defaecatory proctography and total

Patient preferences for long-acting HIV treatment: a preference heterogeneity assessment.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART) is an emerging alternative to daily oral ART pills that may improve HIV treatment adherence. We studied preference heterogeneity for LA-ART among people with HIV (PWH) in western Washington State and Atlanta, Georgia to determine how preference heterogeneity was related to individual characteristics. METHODS: We recruited 699 PWH to complete a survey including 17 choice-tasks, each of which included two hypothetical LA-ART alternatives and current daily oral therapy. Each hypothetical alternative was defined by mode (long-acting [LA] ora

[Transient changes in food preference in a patient with cerebellar infarction].

A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to dizziness and ataxia of the trunk and right upper limb. Brain MRI revealed an acute infarct lesion in the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory. In addition to the cognitive deterioration observed in the subacute phase, a change was noted in her food preference-from light-tasting, low-caloric Japanese cuisine, sugarless coffee, and hot drinks to strong-tasting, high-caloric Western cuisine, sugar-rich coffee, and iced drinks. Single-photon emission computed tomography showed hypoperfusion in the bilateral frontal lobes and

Benzodiazepine usage and patient preference for alternative therapies: A descriptive study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prevalence of chronic benzodiazepine use in primary care settings remains high despite clear evidence of adverse health outcomes resulting from long-term use and the availability of effective alternative behavioural therapies. Eliciting factors influencing past or current usage experience of benzodiazepine users and their future behavioural intention regarding discontinuation or alternative behavioural therapy adoption could be useful in developing informed strategies facilitating successful benzodiazepine withdrawal in long-term users. The aim of this study was to ide

Representing patient preference-related concepts for inclusion in electronic health records.

In recent years shared decision making between patients and their health care providers and the inclusion of patient preferences in patient care have been, in theory, embraced as models for good clinical practice. Patients' experiences, values, and preferences are increasingly acknowledged as important pieces of evidence for appropriate health care decision making. To effectively use information about patient preferences in patient care, this information, which is gathered through a process of preference elicitation, needs to be integrated with other types of information, e.g., diagnoses, trea

Patient preference for early onset of efficacy of preventive migraine treatments.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to ascertain to what extent adults with migraine value an early onset of efficacy for preventive migraine treatments. BACKGROUND: In placebo-controlled clinical trials, treatment with eptinezumab resulted in a lower proportion of adults with migraine on the first day following infusion (day 1; 14% point-reduction for chronic migraine [CM] in PROMISE-2 and 8% point-reduction for episodic migraine [EM] in PROMISE-1). METHODS: Adults with migraine completed an online preference-elicitation thresholding exercise to ascertain to what extent they value no

Synergizing Needs Assessments and Patient Preference Studies for Enhanced Patient-Centered Decision Making in Healthcare.

OBJECTIVES: Over the past decades, criticism has grown regarding the supply-driven approach of medicinal product development. In response, patient-centered methods have been developed to inform decision making. This perspective article aims to reflect on two of these methods, which are needs assessments and patient preference studies (PPSs). METHODS: A reflection was conducted based on existing literature and our collaborative experiences, proposing a conceptual framework that synergistically combines needs assessments and PPSs. RESULTS: Needs assessments identify unmet health-related needs

Composite endpoint for ALS clinical trials based on patient preference: Patient-Ranked Order of Function (PROOF).

BACKGROUND: Patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) show considerable variation in symptoms. Treatments targeting an overall improvement in symptomatology may not address what the majority of patients consider to be most important. Here, we propose a composite endpoint for ALS clinical trials that weighs the improvement in symptoms compared with what the patient population actually wants. METHODS: An online questionnaire was sent out to a population-based registry in The Netherlands. Patients with ALS were asked to score functional domains with a validated self-reported questionnair

Prospective patient preference study for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) treatment attributes impacting patient shared decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) treatment attributes can impact patient treatment preferences. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A discrete choice experiment survey was conducted among adults with CLL from the United States (12/2024-02/2025). Treatment attributes, selected via literature review and clinical input, spanned across efficacy, safety, and convenience (continuous vs fixed duration with monitoring/hospitalization requirements). Attributes' relative importance was calculated using conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Among 199 patients with CLL, attributes with the hi

THC or Compazine for the cancer chemotherapy patient--the UCLA study. Part II: Patient drug preference.

Factors influencing preference for THC vs. Compazine (prochlorperazine) as an antiemetic agent during cancer chemotherapy were studied in 139 patients who received both medications in a double-blind randomized crossover design trial. Nausea reduction was the main determinant of preference. THC preference was associated with more, rather than fewer, drug-related side effects than Compazine, particularly sedation. Patients who reported being anxious or depressed did not experience accentuation of their mood states with either regime. Mood effects, nausea reduction, incidence of side effects, and

Estimation of a Preference-Based Summary Score for the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System: The PROMIS®-Preference (PROPr) Scoring System.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQL) preference-based scores are used to assess the health of populations and patients and for cost-effectiveness analyses. The National Institutes of Health Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) consists of patient-reported outcome measures developed using item response theory. PROMIS is in need of a direct preference-based scoring system for assigning values to health states. OBJECTIVE: To produce societal preference-based scores for 7 PROMIS domains: Cognitive Function-Abilities, Depression, Fatigue, Pain Interferenc

Patient preference for the pre-anesthesia evaluation: Telephone versus in-office assessment.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pre-anesthesia evaluation (PAE) is designed to reduce patient and family anxiety, identify pre-existing health issues, avoid surgical delays, minimize costs, and tailor an anesthetic plan. If PAE requires a clinic visit, patients must take time off work and may incur travel and childcare costs. A telephone-based Preoperative Assessment Clinic can minimize patient inconvenience, while maintaining high-quality patient care and improving efficiency. We assessed patient satisfaction with a telephone PAE and determined whether patients preferred a telephone PAE or a conventional cl

The impact of patient preference on dialysis modality and hemodialysis vascular access.

BACKGROUND: Home-based dialysis, including peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home hemodialysis (HHD), is associated with improved health related quality of life and reduced health resource costs. It is uncertain to what extent initial preferences for dialysis modality influence the first dialysis therapy actually utilized. We examined the relationship between initial dialysis modality choice and first dialysis therapy used. METHODS: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) from a single centre who started dialysis after receiving modality education were included in this study. Multivariable logi

Using patient preference to inform ritlecitinib dose selection for alopecia areata treatment.

Ritlecitinib is an oral Janus kinase 3/tyrosine kinase expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (JAK3/TEC) family kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of severe alopecia areata (AA). Benefit-risk profiles of two doses of ritlecitinib (50 mg vs 30 mg once daily) were evaluated by integrating patient preferences and clinical efficacy and safety estimates for ritlecitinib. A discrete-choice experiment (DCE) was utilized to elicit preferences for benefit and safety attributes of systemic AA treatments. Benefits included probabilities of ≥80% scalp hair coverage and achieving moderate to normal

Patient-Centred Gestational Diabetes Care: Preference Elicitation Methods and Machine Learning Innovations.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) requires long-term management, frequent visits, and additional financial costs compared to normal pregnancies. Patients often express preferences for services that save time, reduce expenses, and simplify screening. Virtual and telehealth services are valued as they shorten travel and waiting times, lower costs, and improve satisfaction. Screening preferences emphasize accuracy, affordability, and convenience, while recent machine learning (ML) models have enhanced prediction and early detection, supporting more personalized strategies. Patients' preferences
