The current study shows the first attempts to clarify the gross, ultrastructure, and histological properties of the pecten oculi of the diurnal, visually active glossy ibis, as well as scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) image analysis (Plegadis falcinellus). Hyalocytes in the pecten oculi and ciliary body of adult chickens and their response to Escherichia coli were investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy and the inflammatory response following the intravitreous injection of colloidal carbon examined by microscopy. Eight older women with stress incontinence caused by intrinsic urethral weakness underwent sling surgery with allogenic fascia lata. The tolerance of the material was excellent. In 1 case a secondary release of the fixation on the pecten was necessary because of too much tension; in the other cases the evolution was uneventful and resulted in perfect continence lasting for at least 2 years of follow-up.

PURPOSE: Woodpeckers often withstand extreme high acceleration during the pecking process, but show no signs of eye injuries. This study seeks to explore what biomechanical adaptations woodpeckers adopt to protect their eyes under such high impact.
METHODS: The morphometric parameter of eyes in the Great Spotted Woodpecker and its control, Eurasian Hoopoe, were observed based on frozen sectioning and Nissl staining. A series of protein expression including β-APP, p-Tau, p-CRMP2, HSP70, and mTOR of the birds' eyes were also obtained using immunofluorescence staining.

In the hyperpolarizing photoreceptors of the scallop Pecten irradians the metabolic inhibitors cyani 'e and 2,4-dinitrophenol cause a rapid hyperpolarization and increase in membrane permeability to potassium ions, similar to the effect of light. Cellular metabolism appears important in maintaining the low permeability to potassium ions necessary to keep the membrane depolarized in darkness, possibly by regulating the intracellular calcium ion concentration.

Sixteen raptors, including one eagle, two falcons, five hawks and eight owls, were found to have developmental ocular lesions. The most common lesion was microphthalmia. Other findings included cataract, microphakia, retinal dysplasia, malformation of the ciliary body, choroid and pecten, and lentoid formation. Specific causes for these lesions could not be determined. It is hypothesized that developmental ocular disease probably is more common than available reports indicate.
