The effect of static magnetic field-assisted freezing (MF) at different temperatures (-35, -30, -25, and -20 °C) on the muscle quality of pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) was evaluated to investigate the possibility of energy saving by MF. The results showed that the -35 °C MF treatment increased the water-holding capacity of shrimp muscle, and maintained the wholeness of the microstructure compared to -35 °C immersion freezing (control group, IF). With the increase in freezing temperature in the MF treatments, the size of ice crystals gradually increased, and the sensory properties

The microsporidian Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is a fungi-related, spore-forming parasite. EHP infection causes growth retardation and size variation in shrimp, resulting in severe economic losses. Studies on shrimp immune response have shown that several antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) were upregulated upon EHP infection. Among those highly upregulated AMPs is c-type lysozyme (LvLyz-c). However, the immune signaling pathway responsible for LvLyz-c production in shrimp as well as its function against the EHP infection are still poorly understood. Here, we characterized major shrimp immune

Ecytonucleospora hepatopenaei (EHP), a microsporidian parasite first named and characterized from the Penaeus monodon (black or giant tiger shrimp), causes growth retardation and poses a significant threat to shrimp farming. We observed shrimp farms associated with disease conditions during our fish disease surveillance and health management program in West Bengal, India. Shrimp exhibited growth retardation and increased size variability, particularly in advanced stages, exhibiting soft shells, lethargy, reduced feeding and empty midguts. Floating white feces were observed on the surface of th

In recent years, due to the destruction of the culture environment and serious ecological pressure, especially in the process of culture, residual bait, faeces and fishery drug abuse will lead to the accumulation of harmful metabolites such as ammonia nitrogen and nitrite, and biological denitrification is the most economical and effective method to remove the single. Therefore, in this study, a nitrite removal strain XA19 was isolated and screened from a shrimp biofloc culture pond. This strain was identified as a clade of Vibrio proteolyticus because the homology between XA19 and V. proteoly

Kuruma prawn (Marsupenaeus japonicus) is a benthic decapod crustacean that is widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific region. It is one of the most important fishery resources in Japan, but its annual catches have declined sharply since the 1990s. To increase stocks, various approaches such as seed production and aquaculture were attempted. Since the demand for important fishery species, including kuruma prawn, is expected to increase worldwide in the future, there is a need to develop new technologies that will make aquaculture more efficient. Historically, the eyestalk endocrine organ is

Shrimp aquaculture industry has steadily increased with demand and development of aquaculture technology. In recent years, frequent diseases have become a major risk factor for shrimp aquaculture, such as a drastically reduced the production of shrimp and causing national economic loss. Among them, shrimp bacterial diseases such as hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) and necrotizing hepatopancreatitis (NHP-B) and parasitic disease such as Aphanomyces astaci (crayfish plague) are emerging and evolving into new types. OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) regularly updates information

Managing the reproduction of shrimp farmed in captivity is essential for selective breeding and interspecies hybridization. Procedures have not been developed for conducting in vitro fertilization in penaeid shrimp. In this study, the feasibility of in vitro fertilization (IVF) of the pre-ovulatory oocyte of Penaeus indicus was examined. Additionally, the processes of fertilization and possibility of hybridizing P. indicus with P. monodon with utilization of IVF procedures was also evaluated. The IVF was conducted by dissecting ovaries with fully developed follicles, and mixing these (~0.1 mil

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is an OIE-listed enteric disease that has continued to plague the shrimp aquaculture industry since its first discovery in 2009. AHPND is one of the biggest disease threats to the shrimp aquaculture industry along with white spot disease (WSD) which has severely impacted both crayfish and shrimp aquaculture. AHPND is caused by specific marine Vibrio spp. which carry plasmid-borne binary toxins PirAVp and PirBVp. This research investigated if crayfish are susceptible to AHPND-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VpAHPND) to discern the potential risk

Viral diseases are among the most serious threats to shrimp aquaculture, causing large-scale mortality and production losses. This review summarizes current knowledge on the major viral diseases affecting cultured penaeid shrimp and freshwater prawns, with particular emphasis on white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), yellow head virus (YHV), Taura syndrome virus (TSV), infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV), and Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV), the causative agent of white tail disease. We present a comparative overview of thei

The lack of robust continuous cell lines remains a major bottleneck limiting cell-level mechanistic dissection of endocrine and metabolic regulation in crustaceans. In this context, experimentally tractable primary cell systems provide a practical and physiologically relevant strategy for interrogating regulatory processes under controlled conditions. Here, we established and functionally validated a primary hepatopancreatic cell platform from the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei for investigating glucose metabolism and endocrine-metabolic regulation. Morphological characterization an

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), caused by the toxin-producing Vibrio sp., has become a serious threat to shrimp aquaculture. Egg yolk immunoglobulin(IgY) has the advantage of low cost and good protection in the treatment of diseases caused by specific pathogens in crustaceans. This study evaluated the protective effect of IgY against AHPND infection in Penaeus vannamei. IgY was isolated from eggs laid by hens immunized with recombinant PirAB toxin, which prepared with the PirAB gene as the target gene. Freeze-dried egg powders with anti-PirAB-IgY were mixed with basal diets at

White feces syndrome (WFS) has been one of the emerging diseases causing instructive economic losses in the penaeid shrimp aquaculture industry, though the etiology of WFS remains unclear. In this research, we have collected intestinal samples from normal and diseased shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) from the natural shrimp cultivation farm for histological and proteomic analysis. The preliminary pathogen detection confirmed that WFS in this study was (Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei) EHP-WFS that was related to Vibrio spp. Moreover, the destructive damage of the intestine in WFS-diseased shrimp reve

The mechanism by which thermal/pressure processing influences the allergenicity of shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) was explored by anaphylaxis in mice, the protein structure, gastrointestinal digestion, and linear epitopes. Roasting induced the unfolding of the structure, which may reduce the allergenicity, but it made more linear epitopes to be exposed, causing mice to exhibit similar systemic anaphylaxis as mice fed with the raw shrimp protein (p > 0.05). However, the roasted + reverse-pressure-sterilized shrimp can significantly reduce specific antibodies, mast cell degranulation, vascular permea

Providencia rettgeri has been recognized as a zoonotic pathogen of humans and aquaculture animals and has become a global public health concern. However, scarce information is available on the characterization of pathogenic P. rettgeri from kuruma shrimp Marsupenaeus japonicus. In the present study, a P. rettgeri isolate (KM4) was confirmed as a causative agent of red leg disease in cultured M. japonicus, which showed a median lethal dose (LD50 ) value of 5.01 × 105 CFU·ml-1 and had multiple resistances to aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, and tetracycline antimicrobials used in aquaculture. Hydrocolloids are often employed as texture modifiers for the preparation of protein-based dysphagia diets. This study investigated the effects of different konjac glucomannan (KGM) concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40 mg/mL) on the gel properties and swallowing characteristics of Chinese shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis powders/konjac glucomannan (SPs/KGM) composite gels. The G' of SPs/KGM composite gels increased by 418.8-fold to 2226.9-fold compared to the controls, demonstrating a concentration-dependent enhancement. A relatively high KGM content progressively weakened the structural stability of

Fusarium disease is an infectious condition that occurs in the cultivation of kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus), primarily presenting as lesions in the gills. These lesions contain proteolytic enzymes of likely bacterial origin. This is the first study to demonstrate fungal-bacterial mixed infection in gill lesions of Fusarium-infected kuruma shrimp. Tenacibaculum spp. showing proteolytic activity were isolated from the lesions, whereas Fusarium spp. showed no such activity. Two Tenacibaculum strains were identified as Tenacibaculum mesophilum based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS) using MiSeq

The present study evaluated the effect of temporal periods of hypothermia and hyperthermia, followed by an optimal temperature recovery phase on the growth, survival, and physiological response of Penaeus vannamei. Post-larvae were exposed to stress periods for 7 and 14 days at 22 °C and 32 °C each, followed by a recovery phase at 28 °C to complete seven experimental weeks, and were compared with a control group maintained at 28 °C. Weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and survival were weekly determined. Muscle, hepatopancreas, and hemolymph were sampled on t

Some aquatic invertebrates contain free d-alanine. We previously showed copious amounts of free d-glutamate, a novel d-amino acid, in the tissue of the male reproductive organs of Marsupenaeus japonicus. Herein, we clarified the distribution and potential role of d-glutamate and d-alanine in male reproductive tissues, namely the testis, vas deferens and seminal receptacle at different growth stages of M. japonicus. The percentage of d-glutamate to total glutamate was over 50% in these tissues. In particular, the content of d-glutamate was the most abundant in the vas deferens, the ratio of d-g

There is an urgent requirement for the improvement of the white leg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei; health-related indices; and immunity due to emerging diseases. Recently, probiotics have been playing an important role in L. vannamei health management. Therefore, the current pond trial was to evaluate the probiotic proficiency of commercial probiotic products of THIONIL (THIO) on the enhancement of the water, soil, growth, digestibility, survival, immune-related indices, and susceptibility of L. vannamei to infection. The study was carried out in the major shrimp culturing regions of Kavali, Ne
