[Serum pepsinogen I in gastroduodenal pathology].

The diffusion of the radioimmunoassay methods for the determination of the serum pepsinogen has offered the opportunity of a direct approach to the analysis of peptic secretion. The aim of our studies has been to evaluate the behaviour of pepsinogen I in gastroduodenal pathology and to point out a possible clinical utilization. Moreover, we have examined all the relationship with the chief cell mass, parietal cell mass and hydrochloric acid secretion.

Helicobacter pylori infection, serum pepsinogens, and pediatric abdominal pain: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: The significance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in pediatric abdominal pain remains poorly recognized. We examined associations of H. pylori infection and serum pepsinogens (PGs), as non-invasive markers of gastritis, with pediatric abdominal pain. A case-control study was conducted among 99 children aged 5-17 years admitted to one hospital for abdominal pain (cases) without an apparent organic reason. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, sera were tested and compared with 179 controls for anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies and PGI and PGII levels.

Serum pepsinogens as markers of response to therapy for Helicobacter pylori gastritis.

We have investigated the effect of therapy for Helicobacter pylori gastritis on serum concentrations of pepsinogen I and II in 43 patients. In the 22 patients in whom therapy resulted in dramatic decrease in gastritis scores and in clearance of the bacteria, there was a highly significant (P = 0.0001) fall in mean serum pepsinogen II from 13.3 +/- 0.8 to 7.9 +/- 0.7 micrograms/liter, and a less pronounced fall in pepsinogen I from 89.0 +/- 5.9 to 78.5 +/- 0.4 micrograms/liter (P = 0.01). These changes resulted in a significant (P = 0.01) increase in the pepsinogen I/II ratio. In contrast, nons

Examination of serum pepsinogen in functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although serum pepsinogen (PG) is considered as a marker of gastric atrophy, it also reflects gastric acid secretion, which closely influences dyspeptic symptoms. We investigated serum PG levels and PGI/PGII ratios in dyspeptic patients, in relation to various different subtypes of symptoms including Rome III classifications. METHODOLOGY: Serum PGs were measured in 75 subjects with dyspeptic symptoms and 42 asymptomatic healthy subjects. RESULTS: PG II level was significantly higher (p=0.0001) and PG I/II ratio was significantly lower (p<0.0001) in subjects with H. pylori in

Serum pepsinogen in screening for gastric cancer.

To establish a sensitive and efficient screening method for gastric cancer using serum pepsinogen, we investigated the characteristics of serum pepsinogen I and II levels and the I/II ratio and their cut-off points. We found that the pepsinogen I level and the I/II ratio were significantly lower in patients with gastric cancer than in control subjects, especially in patients with cancers of the differentiated type, the elevated type, and the depressed type without ulceration. However, sex, depth of invasion, and location of tumor did not correlate with the pepsinogen levels. A suitable cut-off

Clinical significance in combined detection of serum pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II and carbohydrate antigen 242 in gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To explore the diagnosis value and clinical significance of combined detection of serum pepsinogen I (PG I), pepsinogen II (PG II), PG I/II and CA242 in patients with stomach diseases. METHODOLOGY: Serum PG I, PG II and CA242 were detected with time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA) method. Serum levers of the four markers in gastric carcinoma were compared with that in chronic superficial gastritis, chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric ulcer and normal controls. The four indices were analyzed to judge their diagnosis value and the relationship with the biology behavior of ga

A possible association of low pepsinogen I and pepsinogen I/II with low and high body weight in Japanese men.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether low serum pepsinogen I and pepsinogen I/II ratio (PGI-PGI/II), a marker for chronic atrophic gastritis, is associated with low or high body weight. METHODS: We investigated the association between low PGI-PGI/II and both ends of the spectrum of body mass index (BMI) in 819 apparently healthy Japanese men aged 20-75 years who received a medical check-up in 2008. RESULTS: In univariate analysis, serum pepsinogen I, but not pepsinogen II or pepsinogen I/II, was significantly reduced across the increasing BMI categories. Multivariate regression analysis showed t

Immunohistochemical studies on the development of cells containing progastricsin (minor pepsinogen) in comparison to prochymosin and pepsinogen in bovine abomasal mucosa.

The localization of progastricsin was studied in cells of abomasal mucosa from cattle of different ages and feeding regimes and compared to the localization of prochymosin and pepsinogen in the same material by use of an immunofluorescence technique with specific rabbit antibodies. Immunoreactivity for progastricsin was first found in calves at the age of about 45 days in surface mucous cells in the pit of the fundic gland. In older calves and adults, mucous neck cells also produced progastricsin. In the pyloric mucosa, on the other hand, traces of progastricsin immunoreactivity were found in

The effect of vagotomy and antrectomy on serum pepsinogens I and II.

Ninety-seven consecutive patients with gastric surgery for peptic ulcer were studied; 86 had duodenal ulcer (DU), and 11 gastric ulcer (GU). DU patients were surgically treated by proximal vagotomy, proximal vagotomy and pyloroplasty, truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty, or truncal vagotomy and antrectomy. All GU patients were operated on by the Billroth I method. Serum pepsinogen I(S-PG I), serum pepsinogen II (S-PG II), basal acid output (BAO), and maximal acid output (MAO) were determined before and 3 months and 1 year after the operation. The mean preoperative S-PG I concentration in DU pati

Helicobacter pylori infection increases serum nitrate and nitrite more prominently than serum pepsinogens.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection causes chronic gastritis and results in increased serum concentrations of pepsinogens I and II as well as gastrin, while the ratio of pepsinogen I to II (I : II) is decreased. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is induced in H. pylori-associated gastritis and may modulate inflammation. However serum nitrate and nitrite (NOx) concentrations in patients with H. pylori-induced chronic gastritis have not been reported. We examined differences in serum NOx between H. pylori-negative and positive volunteers relative to differences in pepsinogens and gast

Pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and Helicobacter pylori serological biomarkers in the diagnosis of precursor lesions of gastric cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are precursor lesions of gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of the biomarkers pepsinogen I(PgI), pepsinogen II (PgII), gastrin-17, and H. pylori antibodies in the identification of precursor lesions. METHODS: We studied 129 patients with gastric symptoms. The biomarker status was determined using GastroPanel by means of the ELISA-technique. RESULTS: Biomarkers detected atrophy in 14% of the subjects, and 49.6% had positive antibodies for H. pylori. A PgI/PgII ratio < 3 was an important risk biomarke

Serum pepsinogen Ⅰ and the pepsinogen Ⅰ/Ⅱ ratio as a non-invasive predictive marker for autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis (AMAG) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by autoimmune destruction of parietal cells, causing profound gastric body and fundus atrophy. AMAG is frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed in clinical practice. This study aimed to identify optimal cut-off values for serum pepsinogens (PGs) as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for AMAG in a retrospective cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and laboratory data of 520 AMAG patients from our center and compared them with those of 223 control patients who underwent seru

[Serum pepsinogen I/II ratio test].

Serum pepsinogen levels were measured in 137 stomach cancer patients and compared with those of 288 normal cancer-free subjects. The serum pepsinogen levels of stomach cancer patients, especially pepsinogen I and the pepsinogen I/pepsinogen II ratio were significantly lower than those of normal controls and correlated well with the extent of chronic gastritis associated with the cancerous stomach. These results were in good accordance with the results of previous studies indicating that the cancer derived from the stomach where chronic gastritis/intestinal metaplasia is extensive. The initial

The pepsinogen releasing effect of Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS) affects pepsinogen release by a nontoxic mechanism. We hypothesized that this effect was characteristic of the organism and related to the clinical status of the strain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LPS was isolated from 11 H. pylori strains whose pathogenic profile was known and four other nongastric bacteria. The effects of luminal LPS on guinea pig gastric mucosal pepsinogen release was evaluated using the Ussing chamber technique. CCK-8 (10(-9)M) was used as a positive control. RESULTS: H. pylori LPS dose-dependently stimulated pepsinoge

Serum pepsinogen I elevation in cigarette smokers.

We measured serum pepsinogen I (sPG-I) in 269 patients undergoing upper GI endoscopy and then classified by endoscopic diagnosis, gastric mucosal histology, and smoking habit. Both ulcer-free and duodenal ulcer smokers had significantly higher sPG-I levels than their non-smoking controls. In contrast, sPG-I values were not different in smokers and non-smokers with gastric ulcer. In ulcer-free smokers the overall increase in sPG-I simply reflected the high prevalence of patients with superficial gastritis and elevated sPG-I levels. Conversely, in duodenal ulcer smokers the increase in sPG-I, wh

Helicobacter pylori, pepsinogens and gastrin: relationship with age and development of atrophic gastritis.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori causes chronic gastritis in all infected individuals and thus may be a risk factor for the ultimate development of trophic gastritis and gastric cancer. The serum levels of pepsinogen A, pepsinogen C and gastrin can be used as markers for both non-atrophic and atrophic gastritis. METHODS: We determined the serum levels of gastrin, pepsinogen A and pepsinogen C and the pepsinogen A/C ratio in 150 H. pylori-negative and 186 H. pylori-positive individuals. RESULTS: The H. pylori infected patients had significantly higher serum levels of pepsinogen A, pepsinogen C
