BACKGROUND: Detection, confirmation and monitoring of cholera outbreaks in many developing countries including Uganda is a big challenge due to lack of the required resources and the time the test takes. Culture method which takes 24-48 h to get the feedback and requires highly skilled laboratory staff plus other complex resources is the standard test. This study evaluated the new cholera rapid detection method that relies on Crystal VC dipsticks after enrichment with alkaline peptone water (APW) against the culture method for monitoring the progress of cholera outbreaks in rural setting.

The mechanism by which partly digested protein (peptone) stimulates gastrin secretion was examined in isolated antral tissues with intact intramural innervation. In the isolated vascularly perfused rat stomach, luminal perfusion with 0.5% peptone increased gastrin (62 +/- 14 pg/min; P less than 0.01) and decreased somatostatin (74 +/- 19; P less than 0.01) secretion. The axonal blocker tetrodotoxin (TTX) abolished the gastrin and somatostatin responses indicating that the responses were neurally mediated. We compared the Oxoid Signal bottle (Oxoid, U.S.A.) with supplemented peptone broth (SPB) tubes (B-D Vacutainer; Becton Dickinson Vacutainer Systems) for performing blood cultures in a pediatric hospital. A new blood culture medium (brain heart infusion broth) (BHI) from Terumo was compared with a commonly used blood culture medium, supplemented peptone broth (Becton Dickinson) (SPB). Blood from patients with suspected bacteraemia was simultaneously cultured in the two media, approximately five ml of blood in each bottle. We previously demonstrated that Streptococcus oligofermentans suppressed the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the primary cariogenic pathogen, by producing hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) through lactate oxidase activity.
