Mechanistic insights into the efficient activation of peracetic acid by pyrite for the tetracycline abatement.

Recently, iron-based heterogenous catalysts have received much attention in the activation of peracetic acid (PAA) for generating reactive radicals to degrade organic pollutants, yet the PAA activation efficiency is compromised by the slow transformation from Fe(III) to Fe(II). Herein, considering the electron-donating ability of reducing sulfur species, a novel advanced oxidation process by combining pyrite and PAA (simplified as pyrite/PAA) for the abatement of tetracycline (TC) is proposed in this study. In the pyrite/PAA process, TC can be completely removed within 30 min under neutral con

The Use of Germinants to Potentiate the Sensitivity of Bacillus anthracis Spores to Peracetic Acid.

Elimination of Bacillus anthracis spores from the environment is a difficult and costly process due in part to the toxicity of current sporicidal agents. For this reason we investigated the ability of the spore germinants L-alanine (100 mM) and inosine (5 mM) to reduce the concentration of peracetic acid (PAA) required to inactivate B. anthracis spores. While L-alanine significantly enhanced (p = 0.0085) the bactericidal activity of 500 ppm PAA the same was not true for inosine suggesting some form of negative interaction. In contrast the germinant combination proved most effective at 100 ppm

Enhanced tetracycline abatement by peracetic acid activation with sulfidation of nanoscale zerovalent iron.

Iron-based heterogeneous catalysts due to the environmental friendliness have been widely studied for activation of peracetic acid (PAA) for abatement of organic contaminants in the water and wastewater treatment. However, the slow reduction from Fe(III) to Fe(II) of the iron-based catalysts as the rate-limiting step results in the low PAA activation efficiency. With regard to the excellent electron-donating capability of the reductive sulfur species, sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron is proposed for PAA activation (simplified as the S-nZVI/PAA process) and the tetracycline (TC) abatement e

MnZn bimetallic metal-organic framework derivatives for peracetic acid activation and ciprofloxacin removal.

MnZn bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives were synthesized by precipitation followed by calcination in a tube furnace. Incorporating Zn increased the specific surface area and produced a more uniform mesoporous structure in MnZn2-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate-600 (MnZn2-BTC-600), thereby providing additional sites for adsorption and peracetic acid (PAA)-mediated transformation. Under the optimized conditions, the MnZn2-BTC-600/PAA system removed 91.6% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L. The system maintained CIP removal across a broad pH range and was r

Influence of peracetic acid-ethanol sterilisation on the biomechanical properties of human meniscus transplants.

PURPOSE: Meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) is a possible treatment for patients suffering with pain after meniscectomy. Here, peracetic acid (PAA) sterilised meniscus transplants were investigated on whether they would provide an adequate alternative to fresh-frozen transplants in their viscoelastic and mechanical properties. METHODS: In this analysis, 31 menisci donors (26 male and 5 female) were included. The average donor age was 49.87 years, ranging from 32 to 65 years. Menisci of matched pairs of knees underwent chemical sterilisation while counterparts were left fresh-frozen. Sti

Selective degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics by peracetic acid alone: Direct oxidation and radical mechanisms.

In this study, a peracetic acid (PAA) alone process was systematically demonstrated to give a high efficiency in the selective degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The employment of scavengers and probe compounds in this process demonstrates the predominant role of PAA in direct oxidation, and the limited role of carbon-centered radicals (R-O•) in the degradation of representative SA, sulfamethazine (SMT). The process also exhibits high tolerance towards solution pH and competing anions in wastewater, indicating its applicability in enhancing the biodegradation of SAs in wastewater. F

Unexpected Ocular Manifestations Due to Exposure to Highly Concentrated Peracetic Acid: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Peracetic acid is among the disinfectants that irritate the upper respiratory tract, skin, and conjunctiva. It can cause symptoms of eye irritation, secondary to an inflammatory process that can lead to various manifestations. Irritation happens due to the high reduction potential of the acid, which causes the consequent release of reactive oxygen species. This fact serves to reinforce the importance of personal protective equipment when handling peracetic acid. CASE REPORT During an accident at work, a 21-year-old patient received a strong jet of disinfectant solution directly into

Infancy of peracetic acid activation by iron, a new Fenton-based process: A review.

The exacerbated global water scarcity and stricter water directives are leading to an increment in the recycled water use, requiring the development of new cost-effective advanced water treatments to provide safe water to the population. In this sense, peracetic acid (PAA, CH3C(O)OOH) is an environmentally friendly disinfectant with the potential to challenge the dominance of chlorine in large wastewater treatment plants in the near future. PAA can be used as an alternative oxidant to H2O2 to carry out the Fenton reaction, and it has recently been proven as more effective than H2O2 towards eme

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics.

Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are typical antibiotics and have attracted increasing concerns about their wide occurrence in environment as well as potential risk for human health. In this study, we applied a novel advanced oxidation process in SAs degradation by combining molybdenum sulfide and peracetic acid (MoS2/PAA). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including HO●, CH3C(O)O●, CH3C(O)OO●, and 1O2 were generated from PAA by MoS2 activation and contributed to SAs degradation. The effects of initial pH, the dosages of PAA and MoS2, and humic acid for SAs degradation were further evaluated by selec

Respiratory Symptoms in Hospital Cleaning Staff Exposed to a Product Containing Hydrogen Peroxide, Peracetic Acid, and Acetic Acid.

Cleaning and disinfecting products consisting of a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (HP), peracetic acid (PAA), and acetic acid (AA) are widely used as sporicidal agents in health care, childcare, agricultural, food service, and food production industries. HP and PAA are strong oxidants and their mixture is a recognized asthmagen. However, few exposure assessment studies to date have measured HP, PAA, and AA in a health care setting. In 2015, we performed a health and exposure assessment at a hospital where a new sporicidal product, consisting of HP, PAA, and AA was introduced 16 months prior. We

Stable Solid Peracetic Acid Precursor for Effective Decontamination and Reuse of Personal Protective Equipment.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in the global supply chain for personal protective equipment (PPE), necessitating effective decontamination methods to enable the safe reuse of scarce resources like N95 respirators and Tyvek suits. While peracetic acid (PAA) is a potent disinfectant, its liquid form presents significant logistical challenges. This study introduces acetylperoxyborate (APB), a stable solid PAA precursor powder, as a novel solution for point-of-use PPE decontamination. APB was synthesized and characterized, demonstrating excellent thermal stability (decompos

Peracetic Acid Enhances Micropollutant Degradation by Ferrate(VI) through Promotion of Electron Transfer Efficiency.

Ferrate(VI) and peracetic acid (PAA) are two oxidants of growing importance in water treatment. Recently, our group found that simultaneous application of ferrate(VI) and PAA led to much faster degradation of micropollutants compared to that by a single oxidant, and this paper systematically evaluated the underlying mechanisms. First, we used benzoic acid and methyl phenyl sulfoxide as probe compounds and concluded that Fe(IV)/Fe(V) was the main reactive species, while organic radicals [CH3C(O)O•/CH3C(O)OO•] had negligible contribution. Second, we removed the coexistent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2

Oxidation of β-lactam antibiotics by peracetic acid: Reaction kinetics, product and pathway evaluation.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a disinfection oxidant used in many industries including wastewater treatment. β-Lactams, a group of widely prescribed antibiotics, are frequently detected in wastewater effluents and surface waters. The reaction kinetics and transformation of seven β-lactams (cefalexin (CFX), cefadroxil (CFR), cefapirin (CFP), cephalothin (CFT), ampicillin (AMP), amoxicillin (AMX) and penicillin G (PG)) toward PAA were investigated to elucidate the behavior of β-lactams during PAA oxidation processes. The reaction follows second-order kinetics and is much faster at pH 5 and 7 than at p

Toward Robust ARB Inactivation in Wastewater: Comparing Performic Acid, Peracetic Acid, and Chloramination Using ICT, Resistance, and Reactivation Metrics.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), poses a critical global health threat. Although wastewater disinfection limits pathogen dissemination, conventional chlorine-based disinfection can be ineffective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and may induce viable but nonculturable (VBNC) states. This study compared performic acid (PFA), peracetic acid (PAA), and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for inactivation of VRE and total enterococci (TE) in high-ammonia secondary effluent. Batch disinfection experiments were conducted using an integrated conc

Ultraviolet Light, Hydrogen Peroxide, Peracetic Acid, and Ozone as Sanitizers for Hatching Eggs: A Review.

Sanitizing hatching eggs has become increasingly recommended as a strategy to reduce infections, limit the spread of bacteria, and promote healthier conditions for developing embryos. The absence of this procedure can contribute to lower hatchability rates in commercial hatcheries. Therefore, investigating different sanitizers applied to hatching eggs is essential. This review synthesized evidence from Google Scholar up to June 2026, examining the effects of ultraviolet light (UV), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), peracetic acid (PAA), and ozone (O3) on eggshell bacterial load, eggshell structural in

Open the door to the new world of singlet oxygen in the peracetic acid system: Generation and identification.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is rapidly emerging as a versatile oxidant for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Among the reactive oxygen species generated, singlet oxygen (1O2) is notable for its high selectivity toward electron-rich contaminants, broad pH tolerance, and resilience to inorganic anions. However, a comprehensive understanding of its formation pathways and reliable identification methodologies remains elusive, often leading to ambiguous and even contradictory conclusions in the literature. This review consolidates recent progress on PAA-derived 1O2, delineating two principal mechanisti
