Relationship between velopharyngeal closure, hypernasality, nasal air emission and nasal rustle in subjects with repaired cleft palate.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation among velopharyngeal closure, hypernasality, audible nasal air emission (NAE) and nasal rustle (NR), in individuals with repaired cleft palate. METHODS: One hundred patients with repaired cleft palate and lip, submitted to pressure-flow study for measurement of velopharyngeal orifice area (velopharyngeal area) and speech sample recordings. Velopharyngeal area was estimated during the production of the sound /p/ inserted in a sentence, and the velopharyngeal closure was classified as adequate, borderline or inadequate. Hypernasality was rated using a 4-p

Retinal and extra-retinal contributions of blinking to perceptual alternation in bistable apparent motion.

Blinks serve not only to maintain ocular lubrication, but may also contribute to visual processing, although their functional role remains poorly understood. Recent research has shown that spontaneous and voluntary blinks serve distinct functions in perceptual competition involving binocular interactions (Sato & Kimura, 2024). To disentangle the retinal and extra-retinal contributions of blinking, this study investigated how different types of blinks affect perceptual alternation using a bistable apparent motion stimulus where the perceived motion direction alternates between vertical and hori

Factors predicting patient perception of dysphonia caused by benign vocal fold lesions.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To assess factors that may be predictive of patient perception of dysphonia severity, as quantified by the Voice Handicap Index (VHI) score. We hypothesize that 1) level of vocal demand; 2) auditory-perceptual evaluation of dysphonia severity; and 3) vocal function, as defined by phonatory glottal closure and mucosal wave vibration, are the most significant predictors of VHI score. STUDY DESIGN: : Retrospective review of 100 patients with benign vocal fold lesions. METHODS: Variables assessed for predictive value to VHI score are level of vocal demands, auditory-percep

Visual-perceptual impairment in children with periventricular leukomalacia.

We set out to define visuo-perceptual impairment related to periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) using the Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP). Correlations were sought between visual-perceptual deficits and DTVP profile and neuroradiological and neurophthalmological findings. The DTVP was administered to 20 children (m/f: 10/10), aged between 5 and 8 years (mean: 6.95 years), presenting with: spastic diplegia; PVL documented by brain MRI; normal or mildly impaired visual acuity; mild-moderate upper limb functional impairment. The mean General Visual-Perceptual Quotient was impaired,

Where there is no object formation, there is no perceptual organization: Evidence from the configural superiority effect.

Object formation is considered the aim of perceptual organization, but such a proposition has been neglected in empirical studies. In the current study, we investigated the role of object formation in configural superiority. Essentially, discrimination on bar orientations was enhanced by adding a right angle to each of the bars. Such facilitation is due to the emergent feature (EF) of closure formed by combining the bars with right angles. To study object formation, visual stimuli were generated by random dot stereograms to form objects or holes in 3D. Behaviorally, we found that the EF of clo

Impaired visual object processing across an occipital-frontal-hippocampal brain network in schizophrenia: an integrated neuroimaging study.

CONTEXT: Perceptual closure is the ability to identify objects based on partial information and depends on the function of a distributed network of brain regions that include the dorsal and the ventral visual streams, prefrontal cortex (PFC), and hippocampus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate network-level interactions during perceptual closure in schizophrenia using parallel event-related potential (ERP), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and neuropsychological assessment. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Inpatient and outpatient facilities associated with the Nathan Kline Institute f

Multiparameter Voice Assessment in Dysphonics: Correlation Between Objective and Perceptual Parameters.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual assessment and objective measures of voice provide a quantifiable tool for determining the degree of glottal closure, thus helping to distinguish dysphonic voices from normal voices. The correlation between the perceptual and objective parameters of voice in dysphonic can enable the voice pathologist to be more effective in differentiating the normal voices from dysphonic voices. However, only a few studies have investigated the correlation between these measures. OBJECTIVE: To document the differences in the perceptual and objective parameters of voice in participants

[Experiments on perception in schizophrenia (author's transl)].

Acute and chronic schizophrenic subjects were tested with 6 simple experimental tasks of visual stimulus selection. The 2 control groups were a group of non-psychiatric subjects and one of patients with other psychiatric diagnoses. The 6 experimental tasks represented three different types of attention: 1) differentiation between "figure" and "background", 2) concentration; 3) visual integration (Gestalt completion). The main result was that the acute group with paranoidal psychosis and hallucinations made significantly more mistakes in figure-background differentiation (grouping of patterns).

Low confidence for perceptual completion of partially occluded objects.

Pervasive gaps in sensory information are completed in perception. Interestingly, humans are unaware of that perceptual completion in cases of proximal gaps, which are caused by properties of their own sensory system, and report high confidence for the inferred information in those gaps. Here, we investigated whether such overconfidence is also observed in perceptual completion of visual information in distal gaps (i.e., those caused by the properties of the stimulus). In three experiments, we asked participants to perform a perceptual (type 1) task and report their confidence (type 2 task) us

Incomplete figure perception and invisible masking.

The Gollin test (measuring recognition thresholds for fragmented line drawings of everyday objects and animals) has traditionally been regarded as a test of incomplete figure perception or 'closure', though there is a debate about how such closure is achieved. Here, figural incompleteness is considered to be the result of masking, such that absence of contour elements of a fragmented figure is the result of the influence of an 'invisible' mask. It is as though the figure is partly obscured by a mask having parameters identical to those of the background. This mask is 'invisible' only conscious

Preparing an E-learning-based Speech Therapy (EST) efficacy study: Identifying suitable outcome measures to detect within-subject changes of speech intelligibility in dysarthric speakers.

We explored the suitability of perceptual and acoustic outcome measures to prepare E-learning based Speech Therapy (EST) efficacy tests regarding speech intelligibility in dysarthric speakers. Eight speakers with stroke (n=3), Parkinson's disease (n=4) and traumatic brain injury (n=1) participated in a 4 weeks EST trial. A repeated measures design was employed. Perceptual measures were (a) scale ratings for "ease of intelligibility" and "pleasantness" in continuous speech and (b) orthographic transcription scores of semantically unpredictable sentences. Acoustic measures were (c) "intensity du
