Perceptual Ratings Predict Speech Inversion Articulatory Kinematics in Childhood Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether articulatory kinematics, inferred by articulatory phonology speech inversion neural networks, aligned with perceptual ratings of /ɹ/ and /s/ in the speech of children with speech sound disorders. METHOD: Articulatory phonology vocal tract variables were inferred for 5,961 utterances from 118 children and three adults, aged 2.25-45 years. Perceptual ratings were standardized using the novel 5-point PERCEPT Rating Scale and training protocol. Two research questions examined if the articulatory patterns of inferred vocal tract variables aligned with the perc

Can Resident Auditory-Perceptual Voice Assessments Predict Medical Urgency of Voice Disorders?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Growing reliance on telemedicine has created new triaging challenges. This study investigated how effectively otolaryngology resident auditory-perceptual voice assessments performed via telemedicine determined the need for urgent in-person clinic visits. METHODS: Twelve otolaryngology resident physicians (PGY1-PGY5) performed auditory-perceptual assessments on 25 voice samples recorded during initial voice evaluations. Voice samples were balanced in severity and taken in equal numbers from patients with the following diagnoses: benign laryngeal lesions, laryngeal cancer

[Recovery process of auditory perceptual disorders in a child with word deafness].

The patient was a right-handed boy. Pregnancy and delivery were normal. There were no neonatal complications. His development was normal until the age of 6 years and 10 months when he suddenly fell into coma. He was admitted to a hospital, where he was diagnosed as having encephalopathy of unknown cause. It was found that he did not respond to verbal stimuli after recovery from coma. He was referred to our hospital for detailed examination of hearing at the age of 7 years, and received neuroradiological and audiological examinations including X-ray CT, positron-CT, behavioral audiometry, audit

Screening of visual perceptual disorders following acquired brain injury: A Delphi study.

Impairments in visual perception are common after acquired brain injury (ABI) and adequate assessment is crucial for diagnosis and rehabilitation. However, there is no consensus yet on how to assess these disorders after ABI. The aim of the present study was to explore what measures are considered reasonable to be part of a test battery for the screening of a broad range of mid-level and higher-order visual perceptual disorders. A Delphi method was used to collect the opinions of 28 international multidisciplinary experts in visual perception in order to achieve consensus on the content of the

Tinnitus: A Dimensionally Segregated, yet Perceptually Integrated Heterogeneous Disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus subtypes are proposed to lie on a continuum of different symptom dimensions rather than be categorical. However, there is no comprehensive empirical data showing this complex relationship between different tinnitus symptoms. The objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence for the dimensional nature of tinnitus and how different auditory and non-auditory symptoms interact with each other through complex interactions. We do this using graph theory, a mathematical tool that empirically maps this complex interaction. This way, graph theory can be utilised to highl

The Performance of Visual Perceptual Tasks in Patients with Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The most significant features for clinical diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) are cognitive-perceptual and disorganized symptoms. Experimental study of visual perceptual processes is important to elucidate the psychological mechanisms of cognitive-perceptual impairment in SPD. OBJECTIVE: To research the performance of visual perceptual tasks in SPD. DESIGN: Series I and II presented the subjects with visual perceptual tasks with different types of instructions (vague, verbal, or visual perceptual cues). The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R) was also admi

The Charles Bonnet syndrome and the problem of visual perceptual disorders in the elderly.

The literature, classical and modern, on visual perceptual disturbances in the elderly is reviewed. The utility of the concept of the Charles Bonnet Syndrome, an eponym originally coined to describe visual hallucinations in the elderly in the absence of cognitive impairment and peripheral ophthalmopathy, is challenged, particularly as the syndrome has become progressively enlarged. Three representative cases of elderly patients who have developed different types of visual perceptual disturbances are described. It is proposed to undertake a systematic study of the frequency of such disturbances

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness: A functional neuro-otologic disorder.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a functional neuro-otologic disorder that is the most frequent cause of chronic vestibular syndrome. The core vestibular symptoms include dizziness, unsteadiness, and non-spinning vertigo, which are exacerbated by an upright posture or walking, active or passive motion, and exposure to moving or complex visual stimuli. PPPD is mostly precipitated by acute or episodic vestibular diseases; however, its symptoms cannot be accounted for by its precipitants. PPPD is not a diagnosis of exclusion, but may coexist with other structural diseases. Thus,

Early visual perceptual processing is altered in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Existing studies have shown changes in attention and emotion processing of disorder-relevant visual stimuli in those with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). However, early visual processing in OCD has not been assessed, as previous studies did not examine the entire time course of visual processing but instead assessed potential differences in pre-determined visual evoked potentials (VEPs). This study investigates the entire visual processing stream in OCD compared to healthy age-matched controls (HC) using emotionally-neutral visual stimuli and a data-driven rather than hypothesi

Is auditory perceptual timing a core deficit of developmental coordination disorder?

Time is an essential dimension for perceiving and processing auditory events, and for planning and producing motor behaviors. Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 5-6% of children that is characterized by deficits in motor skills. Studies show that children with DCD have motor timing and sensorimotor timing deficits. We suggest that auditory perceptual timing deficits may also be core characteristics of DCD. This idea is consistent with evidence from several domains, (1) motor-related brain regions are often involved in auditory timing process; (

Are patients with social developmental disorders prosopagnosic? Perceptual heterogeneity in the Asperger and socio-emotional processing disorders.

It has been hypothesized that social developmental disorders (SDD) like autism, Asperger's disorder and the social-emotional processing disorder may be associated with prosopagnosic-like deficits in face recognition. We studied the ability to recognize famous faces in 24 adults with a variety of SDD diagnoses. We also measured their ability to discriminate changes in internal facial configuration, a perceptual function that is important in face recognition, and their imagery for famous faces, an index of their facial memory stores. We contrasted their performance with both healthy subjects and

Severity of voice disorders: integration of perceptual and acoustic data in dysphonic patients.

PURPOSE: To analyze the correlation between acoustic measures and intensity of vocal deviation, and its discriminatory power in detecting the presence of vocal change, classifying the severity of the deviation and differencing the type of predominant voice. METHODS: The sample comprised 186 patients with dysphonia. The vocal deviation from the vowel/ε/was evaluated by consensus between three speech language pathologists, using a Visual Analog Scale. We extracted the mean and standard deviation (SD) of the fundamental frequency (F₀), jitter, shimmer, and Glottal-to-Noise Excitation Ratio (GNE)

Enhanced access to early visual processing of perceptual simultaneity in autism spectrum disorders.

We compared judgements of the simultaneity or asynchrony of visual stimuli in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and typically-developing controls using Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Two vertical bars were presented simultaneously or non-simultaneously with two different stimulus onset delays. Participants with ASD distinguished significantly better between real simultaneity (0 ms delay between two stimuli) and apparent simultaneity (17 ms delay between two stimuli) than controls. In line with the increased sensitivity, event-related MEG activity showed increased differential res

Issues in perceptual speech analysis in cleft palate and related disorders: a review.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual speech assessment is central to the evaluation of speech outcomes associated with cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction. However, the complexity of this process is perhaps sometimes underestimated. AIMS: To draw together the many different strands in the complex process of perceptual speech assessment and analysis, and make recommendations for practice. MAIN CONTRIBUTION: This review examines issues such as data sampling, data collection/recording, archiving, the advantages and disadvantages of lay and specialist listeners, approaches to data analysis, reliabilit

Co-occurring disorders: a possible key to visual perceptual deficits in children with developmental coordination disorder?

A study was conducted to examine how visual perceptual functioning in children with DCD may be influenced by co-occurring learning problems such as reading disabilities (RD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants included seven groups of children: 27 children with DCD only, 11 with ADHD only, 14 with RD only, 63 with DCD and at least one other disorder (i.e., DCD + ADHD, DCD + RD, DCD + ADHD + RD), and 73 typically developing controls. Visual perceptual skills were assessed using the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS) and the Rey Osterreith Complex Figure (RO

Perceptual Disturbances and Disorders in the ICD-11: An Overview and a Proposal for Systematic Classification.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has been developed and edited by the World Health Organisation and represents the global standard for recording health information and causes of death. The ICD-11 is the eleventh revision and came into effect on 1 January 2022. Perceptual disturbances refer to abnormalities in the way sensory information is interpreted by the brain, leading to distortions in the perception of reality. These can manifest as distorted perceptions or as phantom perceptions and can occur in all sensory modalities as visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory tactile,
