Systemic nocardiosis in a Mediterranean population of cultured meagre, Argyrosomus regius Asso (Perciformes: Sciaenidae).

Marine cultured meagre, Argyrosomus regius Asso, in central and western Greece were affected by an outbreak of systemic granulomatous disease subsequently demonstrated to be nocardiosis. The fish were originally imported as juveniles from hatcheries in France and Italy and on-grown in Greece, the latter also providing broodstock for a small number of local Greek hatcheries for the production of second-generation juveniles. The disease in cage reared fish had been present throughout the year, particularly in the 1+ and 2+ year old fish with a low to variable morbidity and 1-4% total mortality.

Two new blood flukes (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) from Epinephelinae (Perciformes: Serranidae) of the Pacific Ocean.

Pearsonellum pygmaeus n. sp. is described from Cromileptes altivelis (Serranidae), the Barramundi Cod, from Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef) and Lizard Island (northern Great Barrier Reef). This new species differs from Pearsonellum corventum (type and only species) in the combination of smaller overall body size, the relative distance of the brain from the anterior end, the relative lengths of both the oesophagus and the testis, the degree to which the testis extends outside the intercaecal field, the shape of the testis, the shape and size of the ovary and the extent to which the u

Facial and gill musculature of polynemid fishes, with notes on their possible relationships with sciaenids (Percomorphacea: Perciformes).

The Polynemidae is a family of primarily marine fishes with eight genera and 42 extant species. Many aspects of their morphology are largely unknown, with few reports about their osteology and barely any information on their myology. This paper describes and illustrates in detail all facial and branchial muscles of representative species of polynemids. Our analysis demonstrates the existence of several remarkable and previously unknown specializations in the polynemid musculature. The aponeurotic and completely independent origin of the pars promalaris of the adductor mandibulae is apparently

A cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a perciform species, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): the midbrain and hindbrain.

This study is the third part of a comprehensive series of publications on the cytoarchitectonic organization of the brain of the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. This study provides an atlas of the brain stem based on Nissl-stained transverse sections as well as a description of cell masses and a discussion on comparative aspects of brain stem nuclei, including methodological studies in other species. By external examination, the sea bass exhibits a prominent Optic tectum and Corpus cerebelli as expected in a predator species with a highly developed visual system. However, no hypertrop

Cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a perciform species, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). II. The diencephalon.

The cytoarchitecture of nuclei in the preoptic area, ventral thalamus, dorsal thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus, posterior tuberculum, synencephalon, and pretectum and the accessory optic nuclei was analyzed in a perciform teleost, the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, by using serial sections stained with cresyl-violet. In general, the cytoarchitecture of the preoptic area, ventral and dorsal thalamus, epithalamus, and synencephalon resembles the histological pattern of other teleosts. However, the parvocellular preoptic nucleus of sea bass has been subdivided into parvocellular and anterovent

Cytoarchitectonic study of the brain of a perciform species, the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). I. The telencephalon.

A cytoarchitectonic analysis of the telencephalon of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, based on cresyl violet-stained serial transverse sections, is presented. Rostrally, the brain of the sea bass is occupied by sessile olfactory bulbs coupled to telencephalic hemispheres. The olfactory bulbs comprise an olfactory nerve fiber layer, a glomerular layer, an external cellular layer, a secondary olfactory fiber layer, and an internal cellular layer. Large terminal nerve ganglion cells are evident in the caudomedial olfactory bulbs. We recognized 22 distinct telencephalic nuclei which were classif

Description of Encephalon Morphology of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) From Brazil.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a cichlid species native to Africa and is widely farmed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, making it one of the most commercially important aquaculture species. Despite its significance, there is still a lack of detailed anatomical descriptions of its brain. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive anatomical and histological characterisation of the O. niloticus brain. Brain samples were collected from adult fish (n = 19) raised in a commercial aquaculture system in Brazil. The brain morphology of O. niloticus exhibits the gener

Sex steroids relative to alternative mating behaviors in the simultaneous hermaphrodite Serranus subligarius (Perciformes: Serranidae).

This study is the first investigation of reproductive endocrinology in a simultaneously hermaphroditic teleost, the belted sandfish (Serranus subligarius). We address two questions: (1) Do steroid hormone levels vary during the spawning season or during the daily spawning cycle of sandfish? (2) Do hormone levels vary relative to an individual's phenotype-size, frequency of spawning and aggressive behaviors, and proportion of testis in the gonad? We analyzed circulating estradiol-17beta (E2), testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11KT), 17alpha,20beta,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20betaS), a

Epinephelus sicanus (Doderlein, 1882) (Perciformes: Serranidae: Epinephelinae), a valid species of grouper from the Mediterranean Sea.

During the editing of the paper "In memory of Pietro Doderlein" (Massa et al. 2018), consulting Doderlein's bibliography, and highlighting some interesting documents and the material preserved in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Palermo (MZPA) (today named after Doderlein), a taxonomic anomaly was noticed about a grouper collected more than one hundred years ago. The aim of the present statement is to prove that the name Cerna sicana Doderlein, 1882 (presently as Epinephelus sicanus [Doderlein, 1882]) should be considered a valid species unless it is demonstrated that it is a synonym

First Gonadal Stages of Bonito, Sarda chiliensis (Perciformes: Scombridae) on the Pacific Coast of Northern Chile.

BACKGROUND: The study of the reproductive biology of pelagic fish species, such as Sarda chiliensis (Bonito), is essential for effective fisheries management and aquaculture development. Overfishing has significantly impacted the population of pelagic fish species, making it crucial to understand their reproductive cycles, including maturity stages and spawning periods, to ensure sustainable exploitation. METHODS: This study provides the first histological characterization of the early gonadal stages of Sarda chiliensis from northern Chile. A total of 444 specimens were collected from artisan

Aluminum bioconcentration in female Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Perciformes: Cichlidae) and the effects on pituitary gonadotropins.

In this study, we measured aluminum (Al) bioconcentration in the brain, ovaries, and liver of Oreochromis niloticus females, and analyzed the effects of exposure to Al and acidic pH on the gene expression of follicle-stimulating hormone (βfsh) and luteinizing hormone (βlh) in these animals. Mature females were divided into 4 groups, thus being maintained for 96 h in one of the following conditions: control at neutral pH (Ctr); Al at neutral pH (Al); acidic pH (Ac), and Al at acidic pH (Al-Ac). pH alone did not influence Al bioconcentration in the brain. The animals from the Al-Ac group bioconc

Paths of axons in the visual system of perciform fish and implications of these paths for rules governing axonal growth.

The optic nerve of many perciform fish is ribbon-shaped, and axons from ganglion cells in specific parts of the retina are consistently found in specific places in this ribbon. I utilized this organization to fill selected groups of axons with horseradish peroxidase. I then traced these groups of axons through the nerve and across the tectum to their terminal arbors. The paths of the axons suggest that axons use a number of different mechanisms to guide them to their correct terminal sites. At some points they appear simply to grow along the surface created by earlier axons, but at other point
