The International journal of eating disorders2019eng
OBJECTIVE: Despite the multitude of research surrounding anorexia nervosa (AN) and perfectionism, there is yet to be a thorough investigation comparing perfectionism in those diagnosed with AN and other eating disorders, and other psychiatric diagnoses. The current meta-analysis aimed to explore these comparisons.
METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items or Systematic Reviews Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we identified empirical studies that compared maladaptive and/or adaptive perfectionism scores in those diagnosed with AN and either a non-clinical comparison group, people diagn

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between dimensions of perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed perfectionism) and health functioning in a sample of 489 women with fibromyalgia.
METHODS: Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine whether dimensions of perfectionism were differentially associated with health functioning among women with fibromyalgia after accounting for broader personality traits related to both perfectionism and health functioning.
RESULTS: The results confirmed that both socially prescribed perfect

OBJECTIVES: Increased levels of fatigue and perfectionism were noted during evaluation of cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of functional dysphonia. The investigators thus aimed to explore levels of general fatigue and perfectionism in patients with functional dysphonia and controls.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.
SETTING: Teaching hospital, United Kingdom.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients recruited through speech therapy were asked to recruit a friend as a control, of the same sex and within 5 years of their age. An 11-point fatigue questionnaire, previously validated on a no

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric Vocal Cord Dyskinesia (VCD) is frequently diagnosed in high-achieving youth. However, perfectionism traits in this population remain unquantified.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if our VCD population demonstrates high levels of perfectionism and to examine the relationship between perfectionism and clinical and demographic variables.
DESIGN: Setting, and Participants: Prospective observational cohort study conducted from January 2022 to July 2025 at a tertiary care multidisciplinary pediatric VCD clinic. Participants included 40 consecutive patients diagnosed with VC

High levels of disgust and perfectionism co-exist in some clinical disorders raising questions about the relationship between the two. This research evaluated socially-related and physically-related disgust in people with varying levels of perfectionism. In Study 1, 120 college students participated in a state emotion-eliciting scenario task, then completed both the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised and the Three Dimensions of Disgust Survey (TDDS). In Study 2, 380 Qualtrics users completed the scenarios, along with the TDDS and Multidimensional Perfectionist Scale. Both studies showed that state e

In this review, we synthesize findings regarding the relationship between perfectionism and therapeutic alliance, most of which come from analyses by Blatt and colleagues. Results suggest what follows. First, patients' initial level of perfectionism negatively affects patients' bond with therapists and perception of therapists' Rogerian attributes (empathy, congruence, and regard) early in treatment and engagement in therapy later in treatment. Second, therapists' contribution to alliance is not seemingly affected by patients' initial perfectionism level. Third, individual patients of therapis

The temporal relation between two types of perfectionism - self-oriented perfectionism (SOP) and socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP) - and depressive symptoms was examined in a sample of 653 children (286 girls, 367 boys) across Grades 6 (depressive symptoms only), 7, and 8. A vulnerability model, in which perfectionism affects depressive symptoms, was compared to a scar model, in which depressive symptoms affects perfectionism, and to a reciprocal-causality model, in which both constructs concurrently affect each other across time. Cross-lagged paths analyses using structural equation mod

Despite research documenting a relationship between social anxiety and perfectionism, very little research has examined the relationship between social anxiety and clinical perfectionism, defined as the combination of high personal standards and high maladaptive perfectionistic evaluative concern. In the current studies we examined whether clinical perfectionism predicted social anxiety in a large sample of undergraduates (N=602), in a clinical sample of participants diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD; N=180), and by using a variance decomposition model of self- and informant-report o

OBJECTIVE: The authors' goal was to explore the relation between perfectionism and psychopathology, including eating disorders.
METHOD: Using logistic regression, the authors calculated odds ratios for the associations between perfectionism subscale scores and psychiatric disorders in 1,010 female twins who completed the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and participated in diagnostic interviews.
RESULTS: Elevated concern over mistakes was associated with anorexia and bulimia nervosa but not with other psychiatric disorders. Doubts about actions was associated with eating and anxiety diso

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism has been reported as a specific risk factor for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, but not binge eating disorder. This study examined whether these differences are due to differential associations between perfectionism and specific eating disorder behaviors.
METHOD: Participants (N = 2,482) completed the eating disorders inventory perfectionism scale and a questionnaire assessing eating disorder symptoms.
RESULTS: Perfectionism was associated with an array of disordered eating behaviors in women. However, associations were strongest for fasting and purging. Furthe

While existing research has well documented child perfectionism as a risk factor for depressive symptoms, relatively limited studies have delved into the specific influence of parental child-oriented perfectionism on children's depressive symptoms. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that maternal (not paternal) child-oriented perfectionism had bidirectional links with children's maladaptive perfectionism. Children's

Perfectionism and flexible thinking are frequently reported as impaired in anorexia nervosa (AN), however, the role of perfectionism and cognitive flexibility in eating disorder (ED) symptoms is unclear. Further, it is unclear how individuals with AN may differ in these domains compared to the general community with high or low ED symptoms. Sixty-seven individuals with lifetime AN, 112 community controls with high ED symptoms (high ED-CCs) and 111 community controls with low ED symptoms (low ED-CCs) completed an online survey examining perfectionism, cognitive flexibility, and divergent thinki

OBJECTIVE: Trichotillomania (TTM) is a condition in which individuals repeatedly pull out their hair despite adverse consequences. Several models have suggested underlying processes, with a central feature of hairpulling being an external means to regulate internal states. The frustrated action model suggests that certain affective states arise from perfectionistic beliefs and an overactive, overprepared style of planning, triggering episodes of hairpulling. To date, there is limited research investigating perfectionism in people with TTM. The current study investigated the experiences of hair

OBJECTIVE: The construct of perfectionism has long been related to Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), though research has not considered how OCPD could distinguish individuals with elevated perfectionism. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical differences between those with and without OCPD in a sample of individuals with elevated perfectionism.
METHODS: Seventy-four university students with elevated perfectionism completed a diagnostic assessment and several self-report measures of clinical characteristics and were randomly assigned to complete an exposure-based treatm

This study examined the relationship between perfectionistic concerns (PC) and perfectionistic strivings (PS) with the subcomponents of emotional intelligence (EI) through a latent class person-centered approach. A sample of 1582 Ecuadorian adolescents (619 females) aged from 12 to 18 was employed. The trait meta-mood scale-24 (TMMS-24) and the child and adolescent perfectionism scale (CAPS) were used, respectively, for assessing three subcomponents of EI (i.e., emotional attention, emotional clarity, and mood repair) and two perfectionist dimensions (PC and PS). A three-class solution (High p

Little is known about the relationship between neuropsychology, personality, and eating psychopathology in anorexia nervosa (AN). We aimed to investigate the interaction between set shifting and perfectionism in AN and to ascertain the role of perfectionism as a mediator between set shifting and eating psychopathology. Eighty-five patients with AN and 71 healthy controls completed Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (using 8 as a cut-off for generating groups with high vs. low perfectionism), Beck Depression Inventory, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Task, and Hayling Sentence Completion Tas

OBJECTIVE: Maudsley Family-Based Treatment (FBT) for anorexia is successful for between 50 and 80% of adolescents. To improve this success rate, various approaches to augmenting the treatment have been proposed.
METHOD: In this study, we describe the treatment of three girls with FBTaugmented with a module focusing on perfectionism, defined as personally prescribed or socially derived irrational and rigid expectations and exceedingly high standards of self performance. Multiple times across the 1 year of treatment, girls completed the measures of perfectionism and other outcomes.

This paper reports the results of two studies in a nonclinical (n=105) and primary care outpatient sample (n=110), in which Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD), Dysthymia, and depression were assessed for their distinctive relationship with perfectionism. Results from both studies found that self-reported DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were all intercorrelated, and that DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were correlated with three dimensions of perfectionism-Concern over Mistakes, Doubts about Actions, and Parental Criticism. In the nonclinical sample, variance in measures of D
