Are children with social anxiety disorder more likely than children with other anxiety disorders to anticipate poor social performance and reflect negatively on their performance?

BACKGROUND: The cognitive theory of social anxiety disorder (SAD) suggests that adults with SAD have a tendency to anticipate poor social performance and reflect negatively on their performance following a social event. While a number of studies with socially anxious adults have supported the role of poor performance anticipation and post-event rumination in SAD, to date, only a few studies have addressed whether this also applies to children with SAD. METHODS: Children (7-12 years) diagnosed with SAD (n = 40), other anxious children (n = 40) and non-anxious children (n = 34) were exposed to

Evaluation of the social phobia scale and social interaction anxiety scale as assessments of performance and interaction anxiety.

The DSM-5 classification of performance anxiety as distinct from social anxiety underlines the need for specific measurement instruments. The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used assessments of performance and general interaction anxiety, yet few studies have examined their criterion validity using actual performance and interaction stressors. The current study is the first to assess the scales' convergent and discriminant validity using multimodal anxiety indices including psychophysiological reactivity, which is a key characterizing feature of

Effect of as-needed use of intranasal PH94B on social and performance anxiety in individuals with social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: There are no medications approved for as-needed use for feared situations for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). In the present study, intranasal PH94B was provided for use as needed during stressful events. METHODS: Twenty-two subjects were randomized (double-blind) to 2 weeks of treatment with intranasal PH94B or placebo. Following self-administration of medication prior to a feared event, peak levels of anxiety were recorded using the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS). After 2 weeks, subjects were crossed over to the opposite treatment for 2 weeks. Average

Music performance anxiety, sleep problems, and disordered eating: the role of performance and learning self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Music students face chronic evaluative stress, increasing their vulnerability to sleep problems and disordered eating. Drawing on transdiagnostic and self-regulation frameworks, this study examined whether music performance anxiety (MPA) is associated with both outcomes and whether music performance and learning self-efficacy moderate these associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 260 Chinese music students assessed music performance anxiety, sleep problems, disordered eating, and self-efficacy. Robust maximum likelihood structural equation modeling and Johnson-Neyman an

Development and validation of the performance evaluation anxiety task: a computerized task to identify functionally significant test anxiety.

All currently available instruments for measuring test anxiety are subjective surveys that do not assess functional impairment. Using the attentional control theory of anxiety as its theoretical basis, the Performance Evaluation Anxiety Task (PEAT) was designed as a computerized task to objectively quantify performance disruption induced by negative performance evaluation. Normative scores were determined from a pool of 573 participants. The task was validated using four complementary approaches. Salivary cortisol increased significantly more in individuals classified as highly test anxious (H

Screening performance of the MDS-UPDRS anxiety item in Parkinson's disease: Comparison to the Hamilton anxiety rating scale.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders are common and disabling in Parkinson’s disease, however, systematic assessment is challenging in frontline clinical settings. The Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) includes a single-item anxiety question, but its screening performance has not been definitively established. METHODS: The performance of the MDS-UPDRS anxiety-item was compared to a reference standard – the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) administered in ON and OFF motor states. RESULTS: The MDS-UPDRS anxiety item score ≥ 1 predicted clinically signi

Assessment of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) performance for the diagnosis of anxiety in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Neuropsychiatric lupus (NPSLE) is described in 12-95% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Anxiety disorders are among the most frequent manifestations of NPSLE, occurring in 4-85% of these patients. Several diagnostic tools, such as Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), have been used to assess anxiety in clinical studies in SLE, but there is a lack of data on the performance of these questionnaires in the disease. This study aimed to assess the performance of HADS for the detection of anxiety in male and female patients with SLE, also investigating possible gender dif

Effect of an acute intranasal aerosol dose of PH94B on social and performance anxiety in women with social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Although social anxiety disorder is a common and sometimes disabling condition, there are no approved treatments that can be used on an as-needed basis. The authors examined the acute use of PH94B, an intranasally administered neurosteroidal aerosol, for the acute management of the symptoms of social anxiety disorder. METHOD: The authors conducted a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-dose study of PH94B. Ninety-one women 19-60 years of age with generalized social anxiety disorder received placebo intranasal spray (single-blind) 15 minutes bef

[High on stage? Substance use and performance anxiety among professional musicians].

BACKGROUND: Substance use is commonly assumed to be widespread among musicians; however, empirical data on consumption patterns and the associations with anxiety are limited and heterogeneous. In particular, differentiated longitudinal findings across substances and musical genres are lacking. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the use of various psychoactive substances among professional musicians from different genres, including the examination of changes over time and associations with (performance) anxiety. Acceptance and commitment coaching for music performance anxiety in adolescent singers.

INTRODUCTION: Most of the anxiety disorders, particularly social anxiety, seem to develop either during childhood or adolescence. Adolescent singers who experience physical, mental and emotional changes along with voice change are particularly prone to the development of MPA. However, adolescence also seems to be an opportune time to instil healthy behaviours in singing students as they are more likely to remember these coping strategies, owing to the release of dopamine and the 'reminiscence bump'. As this period of a singer's life is wrought with inevitable anxiety development, the additiona

Social Anxiety, Affect, Cortisol Response and Performance on a Speech Task.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by increased emotional reactivity to social stimuli, but results of studies focusing on affective reactions of socially anxious subjects in the situation of social exposition are inconclusive, especially in the case of endocrinological measures of affect. SAMPLING AND METHODS: This study was designed to examine individual differences in endocrinological and affective reactions to social exposure as well as in performance on a speech task in a group of students (n = 44) comprising subjects with either high or low levels of social anxiety. Global and local evaluations of public speaking performance in social anxiety.

Differences in the relative use of global and local information (seeing the forest vs. the trees) may explain why people with social anxiety often do not benefit from corrective feedback, even though they pay close attention to details in social situations. In the current study, participants high (n=43) or low (n=47) in social anxiety symptoms gave a series of brief speeches, and then self-rated their speaking performance on items reflecting global and local performance indicators (self-assessment) and also received standardized performance feedback from an experimenter. Participants then comp

Cognitive-evaluative features of childhood social anxiety in a performance task.

Using an experimental design, we analysed differences in the occurrence of cognitive-evaluative distortions and performance deficits across children with social anxiety disorder, with subclinical anxiety and without any anxiety symptoms. Twenty-one children with full syndrome social phobia, 18 children with partial syndrome social phobia and 20 children without any symptoms of social phobia were compared with respect to their degree of anxiety, negative thinking and task performance during two social-evaluative tasks. In addition, self-ratings of task performance, performance estimations for o

Sport-related performance anxiety in young athletes: a clinical practice review.

Performance anxiety is characterized by intense feelings of emotional distress before, during, or after performing in front of others. In pediatric patients who participate in organized, competitive athletics, this can manifest with somatic, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms such as activation of the sympathetic nervous system and avoidance behaviors. Performance anxiety may now be classified as a psychiatric disorder if symptoms have been longstanding and cause significant emotional distress and/or functional impairment. Participation in competitive sports can confer many benefits to pediatr

Assessment-related anxiety among older adults: associations with neuropsychological test performance.

Anxiety disrupts test performance across academic/testing contexts; however, the impact of anxiety on neuropsychological testing has been examined less frequently among older adults, despite clinical observations of high anxiety and dementia worry among elderly individuals in assessment contexts. The present study examined the impact of trait, state, and test anxiety on measures of processing speed, working memory, verbal memory, and aspects of executive functioning (i.e., set shifting and inhibition). We hypothesized that anxiety specific to neuropsychological assessment would correlate with

"Cold" Cognitive Control and Attentional Symptoms in Anxiety: Perceptions Versus Performance.

Clinically significant anxiety is associated with an array of attentional symptoms (e.g., difficulty concentrating; unwanted thought) that are subjectively experienced as severe. However, neuropsychological findings are mixed with respect to the presence of cognitive deficits that can account for these symptoms. Contextualizing predictions from established clinical theories (e.g., Attentional Control Theory) within contemporary, neurobiologically derived models of cognitive control (Dual Mechanisms of Control Theory), the present study investigated the relationship between "cold" proactive and

The measurement of competitive anxiety during balance beam performance in gymnasts.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate competitive anxiety during balance beam performance in gymnasts. Competitive anxiety was assessed continuously by heart rate monitoring and by retrospective self-report of nervousness in eight female national level gymnasts during their balance beam routine during one competition and two training sessions. A significant negative correlation was found between the score of the retrospective self-report of nervousness and performance during the routine. There were no significant differences in performance score by the judges between the three te

Relations among Social Anxiety, Eye Contact Avoidance, State Anxiety, and Perception of Interaction Performance during a Live Conversation.

There is building evidence that highly socially anxious (HSA) individuals frequently avoid making eye contact, which may contribute to less meaningful social interactions and maintenance of social anxiety symptoms. However, research to date is lacking in ecological validity due to the usage of either static or pre-recorded facial stimuli or subjective coding of eye contact. The current study examined the relationships among trait social anxiety, eye contact avoidance, state anxiety, and participants' self-perceptions of interaction performance during a live, four-minute conversation with a con

The Effects of Training on Anxiety and Task Performance in Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: In commercial spaceflight, anxiety could become mission-impacting, causing negative experiences or endangering the flight itself. We studied layperson response to four varied-length training programs (ranging from 1 h-2 d of preparation) prior to centrifuge simulation of launch and re-entry acceleration profiles expected during suborbital spaceflight. We examined subject task execution, evaluating performance in high-stress conditions. We sought to identify any trends in demographics, hemodynamics, or similar factors in subjects with the highest anxiety or poorest tolerance of th
