Endometriosis presenting as a perianal abscess: case report.

Endometriosis is common benign disorder characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Endometriosis of perianal region is a rare condition. We report a case of perianal endometriosis presenting initially as a perianal abscess. Transperineal ultrasound showed a 1.5 cm size irregular mixed echogenicity lesion without involving anal sphincters. Complete surgical excision was performed. The histopathological examination confirmed as endometriosis.

Anterior ilioinguinal incision for drainage of high-located perianal abscess.

Most perianal abscesses originate from infected anal glands at the base of the anal crypts. Most abscesses below are usually drained through perianal incision and can be treated successfully. However, when perianal abscesses extend to the high intrapelvic cavity, it may be inadequate treatment through a single route incision through a perianal approach. The aim of this technical note is to show that combined anterior ilioinguinal and perianal incisions may provide optimal surgical field and multiple drainages. Here, we report a 56-year-old male patient with perianal-originating parapsoas absce

Biphasic pulses enhance bleomycin efficacy in a spontaneous canine perianal tumors model.

Perianal tumors (adenoma and carcinoma of the hepatoid glands) are frequently reported in veterinary literature. They are locally aggressive tumors with a low tendency to metastatic spread. An hormonal ethiology has been identified for the development of perianal adenomas in male dogs, while the carcinomas are free from hormonal influence. Standard treatments include surgery, cryotherapy or, in selected cases, radiation therapy. In this article we describe the outcome of a small cohort of canine patients with perianal tumors treated with bleomycin selectively driven by trains of biphasic pulse

Trophobiotic organ and perianal structures in aphid genus Stomaphis WALKER (Aphididae, Lachninae).

Stomaphis Walker is an obligatorily myrmecophilous, tree-trunk feeding aphid genus, having many peculiar features in its morphology. One poorly studied trait is its perianal anatomy, with suspected existence of trophobiotic organ and intriguing tubercles near abdominal segment VIII. Tubercles on rear end of abdomen in Stomaphis were considered to be marginal tubercles, structure typical of aphids. Only after their investigation under scanning electron microscope they revealed to possess a very rough surface, consisting of many protuberant, sclerotic scales with finger-like processes. Analysis

[Verneuil's disease or perianal hydradenitis suppurativa].

Verneuil's disease or perianal hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic suppurative disease with a tendency to fistulization and sclerosis, developing on the subcutaneous tissue, on apocrine glands. The perianal location is the most frequent, and the elective therapy in such case is surgery. A case of perianal Verneuil's disease of great size, invalidating for the patient, in which medical therapy failed, making necessary an aggressive surgical treatment is reported. The therapeutical possibilities of this disease and its possible complications, are discussed.

[Gastrointestinal surgery and gastroenterology. XIII. Classification and diagnosis of perianal fistulas].

Intersphincteric abscesses due to inflammation of an anal gland are the origin of most perianal fistulas. Perianal fistulas are classified into four types. Intersphincteric and transsphincteric fistulas are the most common. The appropriate surgical treatment of perianal fistulas is dependent upon their correct classification. Despite new imaging-techniques, physical examination of the perianal region remains of paramount importance for the preoperative classification of perianal fistulas. At present, endoanal ultrasound with the injection of hydrogen peroxide into the fistulous tract, is advoc

The Curious Incidence of Mucinous Adenocarcinoma Masquerading as Perianal Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), also known as acne inversa, is a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the terminal follicular epithelium within the apocrine skin glands. When these lesions develop in the genital and perianal regions, there is a potential risk of progression to squamous cell carcinoma or mucinous adenocarcinoma. The tumor may appear in the perianal area, perineum, or buttocks. Here, we present a rare case of long-standing perianal HS with associated fistula-related mucinous adenocarcinoma and the challenges we faced in managing this condition.

Morphology and histogenesis of anal region and clitoral gland tumors induced in mice by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine.

Ninety-seven tumors induced in the anal region in female CBA and BALB/c mice by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine were examined histologically. Tumors originated mainly from the following sources: epidermis (papillomas and basal cell neoplasms), pilosebaceous complexes of the anal region (keratoacanthomas, cystic squamous cell tumors, and adenomas of the perianal sebaceous glands), and clitoral (preputial) glands (adenomas and adenoacanthomas). A subcutaneous location and late ulceration were characteristics of many tumors originating from the pilosebaceous complexes and clitoral glads. From 31 to 43% of

Multiple perianal infundibular follicular cysts in a dog.

This case report describes a 7-year-old male cocker spaniel dog with multiple perianal infundibular follicular cysts. Clinically the dog had moderate anal sacculitis, peri-anal pruritus causing it to 'scoot' and lick the area. On examination of the perianal area, there were over 100 firm, well circumscribed papules, ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 cm in diameter with a central pore, and were found in the perianal region. Alopecia was present in the perianal region. The skin tissue in the perianal region resected surgically was submitted for histological examination. Microscopically, the tissue revealed

[Adenocarcinoma of the anal glands. Description of a clinical case and review of the literature].

Adenocarcinoma of the anal glands is a rare slow-growing tumor with a more favorable prognosis compared with colorectal adenocarcinoma, especially if an early diagnosis is established. Clinical symptoms of this disease, often associated with a fistula in ano as in the reported case, include: perianal pain, rectal bleeding and presence of perianal mass. Also perianal Paget's disease may be a not rare association with adenocarcinoma of the anal glands. We believe, therefore, that a histological examination of the resected fistulas in ano should be performed, in searching for the presence of muci

Deep dermal and subcutaneous canine hemangiosarcoma in the perianal area: diagnosis of perianal mass in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the perianal area occur frequently in dogs, and the two most common tumors are perianal gland adenoma and anal sac adenocarcinoma; others such as mast cell tumor, lymphoma and melanoma can also occur at this site. Diagnostic cytology is a useful technique and is usually used to establish a definitive diagnosis of some tumors in veterinary medicine. This report describes an extremely rare case of a deep dermal and subcutaneous canine hemangiosarcoma in the perianal area. CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old intact male spaniel was presented for evaluation of a 4 × 4 cm, ulcer

Perineal burn injury with hidradenitis suppurativa: A case report.

RATIONALE: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease which usually presents with painful, deep-seated, inflamed lesions in the apocrine gland-bearing areas. Severe HS has interconnecting sinus tracts and when it occurs in the perianal region, perianal fistulas can form. Obesity and smoking are 2 risk factors for the development of HS. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case of a 33-year-old male diagnosed with perianal HS and perianal fistula following a burn injury to the area that occurred during childhood. DIAGNOSIS: Through integration of the clinical signs and ima

Perianal Paget disease treated definitively with radiotherapy.

Extramammary Paget disease (empd) is a relatively rare cutaneous disorder described as an apocrine gland tumour occurring in both a benign and a malignant form with metastatic potential. The areas of the body affected are the vulva, perianal region, penis, scrotum, perineum, and axilla, all of which contain apocrine glands. When empd affects the perianal region, it is called perianal Paget disease (ppd). All forms of empd, including ppd, are typically treated by wide surgical excision. Perianal Paget disease usually occurs later in life in patients who are often poor surgical candidates, but t

[Perineal suppurative hidradenitis and carcinoma. A case report].

Suppurative hidradenitis is a chronic inflammatory process that involves apocrine glands of the axial, inguinal and perianal region. We present a male patient of 47 years old who was admitted to our hospital with a complex perianal fistula with not a good evolution after surgery. Then, a large resection of the gluteus was performed, because of a big lesion extended to the perianal region. A colostomy was associated. The pathology showed an epidermoid carcinoma. This is a rare complication of the suppurative hidradenitis. The final treatment is a large resection of the lesion. The few number of

Chronic hidradenitis suppurativa and perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis is a chronic and suppurative inflammation of the apocrine sudoriparous glands. When located in the genital and perianal regions, it may be associated with cancer. This is the first case report of hidradenitis suppurativa in the vulvar region associated with perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma. CASE: The patient was a 48-year-old woman who presented with extensive hidradenitis suppurativa in the vulvar and perianal regions. She had a 10-year history of hidradenitis suppurativa, previously managed at other institutions, with no satisfactory response. She underwent a simple

Perianal Hidradenoma Papilliferum Mimicking a Chronic Hemorrhoid: A Case Report.

Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a rare, benign neoplasm classically originating from apocrine or mammary-like glands. While predominantly presenting in the vulvar region, its occurrence in the perianal location is exceptionally rare and frequently misdiagnosed as hemorrhoidal disease or other localized benign lesions. We present the case of a 50-year-old female patient reporting acute perianal pain following defecation straining, accompanied by the sensation of an asymptomatic perianal mass present for three years. Clinical examination identified a 1.5 cm well-circumscribed, reddish-brown nod

Crohn's Disease-Associated and Cryptoglandular Fistulas: Differences and Similarities.

Perianal fistulas are defined as pathological connections between the anorectal canal and the perianal skin. Most perianal fistulas are cryptoglandular fistulas, which are thought to originate from infected anal glands. The remainder of the fistulas mainly arises as complications of Crohn's disease (CD), trauma, or as a result of malignancies. Fistulas in CD are considered as a consequence of a chronic and transmural inflammatory process in the distal bowel and can, in some cases, even precede the diagnosis of CD. Although both cryptoglandular and CD-associated fistulas might look similar macr

A Comparative Immunohistochemical Study of Anal Canal Epithelium in Humans and Swine, Focusing on the Anal Transitional Zone Epithelium and the Anal Glands.

To better understand the cellular origins and differentiation of anal canal epithelial neoplasms, the immunohistochemical profiles of the anal canal epithelium in humans and swine were evaluated. Formalin-fixed tissue sections were immunostained for mucin (MUC: MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B), desmoglein 3 (DGS3), p63, CDX2, SOX2, and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). The anal transitional zone (ATZ) epithelium covered the anal sinus and consisted of a stratified epithelium with mucous cells interspersed within the surface lining. Anal glands opened into the anal sinus. Ducts and acini of intraepithelial or

Perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma: a clue to its pathogenesis.

The case of a 49 year old male patient who presented with perianal mucinous adenocarcinoma is presented. This is a rare anal tumour with a low grade, well-differentiated histological pattern. Its pathogenesis remains obscure, although a long antecedent history of fistula in ano and associated perianal sepsis is characteristic. The exact etiological relationship with anal fistula is not clearly established. The upper rectum is usually spared. Perianal Paget's disease is often seen in association with the tumour. Metastases occur late and spread is usually to the inguinal group of lymph nodes. C

Surgical treatment of chronic hidradenitis suppurativa in the gluteal and perianal regions.

INTRODUCTION: Verneuil disease, or perianal hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), is a chronic suppurative disease with a tendency to develop sinus formation, fibrosis, and sclerosis, having a great impact on quality of life. HS affect the apocrine sweat glands or sebaceous glands and may arise in each of the regions where the apocrine glands are prominent: the axilla, breast aureole, umbilicus, perineum, groin, and buttocks. We present here moderate and extensive HS cases, with their respective treatment methods and outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review of 6 patients' medical records from Janua
