Prevalence of unculturable bacteria in the periapical abscess: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of unculturable bacteria in periapical abscess, radicular cyst, and periapical granuloma. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Ovid databases were systematically searched from January 1990 to May 2020. All the included studies were cross-sectional design. The risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute check-list. Heterogeneity was described using meta-regression and mixed-effects model for lesion, country, and sequence technique moderators. Funnel plot and unweighted Egger's regression test were used to estimate the publication bias. Mi

Periapical abscess precipitating diabetic ketoacidosis and reversible sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes mellitus, most commonly precipitated by infection. Patients with diabetes are at a significantly elevated risk for severe infections and sepsis. Odontogenic infections represent a prevalent but potentially overlooked source of sepsis in this population, given the established bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes presented with a one-week history of left jaw pain and one day of severe dyspnea and let

A case of bacteremia caused by Dialister pneumosintes and Slackia exigua in a patient with periapical abscess.

Dialister pneumosintes and Slackia exigua are both obligatory anaerobe and known to be associated with periodontal diseases and other oral infection. We report a case of blood stream infection caused by D. pneumosintes and S. exigua. This occurred in a 78-year-old female patient that presented with general weakness and fever. We revealed that she had a periapical abscess. The blood culture was positive for D. pneumosintes and S. exigua; however, identifying them was challenging. Ultimately, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to identify the organisms. The patient recovered after being treated with c

Acute periapical abscesses may be a risk factor for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

PURPOSE: To explore the potential association between acute periapical abscesses (PAs) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The study assessed the risk for MRONJ in patients seeking emergency dental treatment for acute PAs in a large medical facility in the United States. METHODS: Data aggregated from 1,799,122 patients visiting a large medical center were recorded. Data from the corresponding diagnosis codes for MRONJ and acute PAs was retrieved by searching the appropriate query in the database. The odd ratio of acute PAs and their association with MRONJ were calculated

Hospital charges and length of stay due to periapical abscess, United States 2020-2022.

BACKGROUND: Periapical abscess (PA) is a preventable disease that can potentially be fatal if untreated. In the United States, an average of 300 patients die in hospital settings annually from PA, highlighting barriers to oral health care. The authors conducted a nationwide study to identify key factors for efficient hospital resource use and better patient outcomes. METHODS: The authors used data from 2020 through 2022 from the National Inpatient Sample database. All hospitalizations for a primary or secondary diagnosis of PA were examined. The characteristics of patients and hospitals were

An unnoticed origin of fever: periapical tooth abscess. Three case reports and literature review.

Dental infections may lead to severe local or systemic infections such as endocarditis, brain abscesses and mediastinitis. Fever may be the only symptom. We aim to highlight dental/odontogenic abscesses as the occult source of unexplained fever by reporting on three cases and reviewing the relevant literature. Early dental evaluation and referral of patients with persistent fever (even without any oral symptoms) to a dentist plays a critical role in preventing unnecessary, time-consuming and high-cost further diagnostic tests and invasive procedures. A simple panoramic dental radiography may s

Outcomes of hospitalizations attributed to periapical abscess from 2000 to 2008: a longitudinal trend analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Root canal therapy is a highly successful in-office treatment and preventive measure against periapical abscesses. Left untreated, periapical abscesses can have serious consequences that can lead to hospitalization. This study observes the trends of hospitalizations attributed to periapical abscesses. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (years 2000-2008) was used; we selected cases with a primary diagnosis of a periapical abscess with/without sinus involvement. The demographic characteristics and outcomes were examined. Each individual hospitaliz

Maxillary sinusitis and periapical abscess following periodontal therapy: a case report using three-dimensional evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinusitis may develop from the extension of periodontal disease. In this case, reconstructed three-dimensional images from multidetector spiral computed tomographs were helpful in evaluating periodontal bony defects and their relationship with the maxillary sinus. METHODS: A 42-year-old woman in good general health presented with a chronic deep periodontal pocket on the palatal and interproximal aspects of tooth #14. Probing depths of the tooth ranged from 2 to 9 mm, and it exhibited a Class 1 mobility. Radiographs revealed a close relationship between the root apex and

Chronic factitial ulcer of chin cured by endodontic (root-canal) surgery for underlying periapical abscess.

In a determined search for the cause of a "factitial" ulcer of the jaw, consultation with 3 dentists was required before an underlying periapical abscess was discovered. Within 3 months of endodontic surgery, this ulcer of 12 years duration had completely healed and remains healed. Too often dental infection is neither suspected nor detected as a cause of skin disease.

Two-Year Outcomes of Regenerative Therapy in an Immature Maxillary Molar With Periapical Abscess: A Case Report.

Trauma or caries in teeth with incomplete root formation can lead to pulp necrosis. Endodontic treatment in such cases requires specific clinical protocols that differ from conventional approaches due to the anatomical and developmental characteristics of immature teeth. This case report describes the clinical management of a maxillary second molar (tooth #17) with incomplete root development and a periapical abscess, treated through pulp revascularization. A 13-year-old male patient presented with spontaneous, throbbing pain in the upper right facial region, accompanied by infraorbital swelli
