Perilla ketone: a model of increased pulmonary microvascular permeability pulmonary edema in sheep.

A model of increased microvascular permeability pulmonary edema was developed in chronically instrumented unanesthetized sheep using perilla ketone (PK). PK did not cause changes in pulmonary hemodynamics but did cause marked increases in the flow of protein-rich lung lymph. The changes in lung lymph flow were accompanied by radiographic evidence of both interstitial and alveolar pulmonary edema as well as hypoxemia. PK did not cause acute changes in lung mechanics. Dynamic compliance of the lungs and FRC decreased later, concomitant with the changes in lung lymph flow, radiographic evidence f

Fermented Perilla frutescens Ameliorates Depression-like Behavior in Sleep-Deprivation-Induced Stress Model.

Excessive stress plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of mood disorders such as depression. Fermented natural products have recently attracted attention because of their health benefits. We evaluated the antidepressant-like efficacy of fermented Perilla frutescens (FPF), and its underlying mechanisms, in sleep deprivation (SD)-induced stress mice. SD-stressed mice revealed a remarkable increase in the immobility time in both forced swimming test and tail suspension test; this increase was ameliorated by treatment with FPF at doses of 100 and 150 mg/kg. FPF treatment also reduced the level

Anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects of luteolin from Perilla (P. frutescens L.) leaves.

Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) leaves have shown therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, allergies, bronchial asthma, and systemic damage due to free radicals. In the present study we analyzed the active constituents in perilla leaves using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and isolated luteolin, a polyphenolic flavonoid. We investigated the anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties of luteolin. Luteolin inhibited the secretion of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1 β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) from human mast cells (HMC-1) st

Microalgae enhance cadmium accumulation in Perilla frutescens: root structural adaptation and secretion-mediated detoxification.

INTRODUCTION: Cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation is often constrained by the low accumulation capacity and limited stress tolerance of most plant species. Developing approaches to overcome these limitations is essential for more efficient phytoremediation. METHODS: The effect of microalgae supplementation on Cd phytoextraction in Perilla frutescens was evaluated under Cd stress, with plant growth, Cd accumulation, and root physiological, structural, and metabolic responses examined to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Microalgae supplementation significantly enhanced total plant bioma

Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of BAHD Acyltransferases Involved in Anthocyanin Biosynthesis in Perilla frutescens.

Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a medicinal and edible herb, is valued for its diverse leaf coloration, attributed to varying levels of anthocyanin accumulation. The primary anthocyanins in P. frutescens are acylated cyanidin glycosides; however, the enzymes facilitating the acylation process have yet to be characterized. BAHD acyltransferases, known to catalyze such modifications, remain uncharacterized in P. frutescens. To systematically identify potential genes that may be associated with this function, we performed a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the BAHD acyltransferase family in

Structural characterization and anti-neuroinflammatory activity of polysaccharides isolated from the leaves of Perilla frutescens.

In this study, the effect of crude polysaccharide (PF50) from the leaves of Perilla frutescens on the levels of inflammatory mediator proteins was evaluated through Western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis. The results showed that PF50 exerted potent anti-neuroinflammatory effects by significantly suppressing the NO release and expression of the proinflammatory cytokine mediators. Importantly, the PF50 concentration is independently protected against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-triggered microglial activation-mediated neurotoxicity via inhibiting ROS production and improving mitochondrial

Microalgae-augmented cadmium accumulation in Perilla frutescens: an integrated plant-microbe strategy for enhanced phytoremediation.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination severely threatens agricultural productivity and ecosystem health. Phytoremediation offers a sustainable solution for Cd-contaminated soils, but its efficiency may decline as plant growth and detoxification capacity are inhibited. To address this, the present study developed a microalgae-Perilla frutescens remediation system and assessed its performance under low (50 mg/kg) and high (150 mg/kg) Cd conditions. Microalgae co-treatment increased Cd accumulation in roots, stems and leaves by 82.01 %, 14.83 % and 8.04 % under low Cd stress, and by 40.26 %, 86.40 % and 28.

Water-extracted Perilla frutescens increases endometrial receptivity though leukemia inhibitory factor-dependent expression of integrins.

The leaves and stems of Perilla frutescens var. acuta Kudo (PF) have been used to prevent threatened abortion in traditional medicine in the East Asian countries. Because reduced receptivity of endometrium is a cause of abortion, we analyzed the action of PF on the endometrial receptivity. PF increased the level of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), a major cytokine regulating endometrial receptivity, and LIF receptor in human endometrial Ishikawa cells. The PF-induced LIF expression was mediated by c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 pathways. Adhesion between Ishikawa cells and trophoblasti

[Dopaminergic neuroprotection via Nrf2-ARE pathway activation: identification of an activator from green perilla leaves].

Parkinson disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and is characterized by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Although a decrease in proteasome activity has been found in patients with sporadic Parkinson disease, the relationship between the ubiquitin-proteasome system and dopaminergic neuronal death remains to be elucidated. Here, we review a mechanism in which proteasome inhibition provides dopaminergic neuroprotection from oxidative stress. Treatment with lactacystin, a proteasome inhibitor, significantly suppressed 6-hydroxydopamine (6-

Perilla frutescens seeds enhance lamb immunity and antioxidant capacity via the microbiota-gut-liver-muscle axis.

BACKGROUND: Perilla frutescens seeds (PFS) are gaining recognition as a natural alternative to antibiotics in livestock, supporting sustainable farming and animal health. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms through which PFS influence host immune function and antioxidant capacity, especially via the gut-liver-muscle axis, remain largely unknown. This study employed an integrative multi-omics approach to elucidate how PFS supplementation modulates the microbiota-gut-liver-muscle axis and enhances immune and antioxidant functions in lambs. RESULTS: PFS supplementation markedly improved

Rosmarinic Acid Enriched Fraction from Perilla frutescens Leaves Strongly Protects Indomethacin-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Rats.

Gastric ulcers are a common problem in upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) disorders. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most aggressive factors leading to inducing gastric ulcers. Natural products with lower toxicity and safety are currently sought as a potential source to minimize the effect of the gastric ulcers. Perilla frutescens or Nga-mon (in Thai) leaves are rich in rosmarinic acid (RA), which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. This study investigates the protective effect of ethanolic extract (EE) and aqueous fraction (AF) from Perilla
