Structural characterization and anti-neuroinflammatory activity of polysaccharides isolated from the leaves of Perilla frutescens.

In this study, the effect of crude polysaccharide (PF50) from the leaves of Perilla frutescens on the levels of inflammatory mediator proteins was evaluated through Western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis. The results showed that PF50 exerted potent anti-neuroinflammatory effects by significantly suppressing the NO release and expression of the proinflammatory cytokine mediators. Importantly, the PF50 concentration is independently protected against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-triggered microglial activation-mediated neurotoxicity via inhibiting ROS production and improving mitochondrial

Microalgae-augmented cadmium accumulation in Perilla frutescens: an integrated plant-microbe strategy for enhanced phytoremediation.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination severely threatens agricultural productivity and ecosystem health. Phytoremediation offers a sustainable solution for Cd-contaminated soils, but its efficiency may decline as plant growth and detoxification capacity are inhibited. To address this, the present study developed a microalgae-Perilla frutescens remediation system and assessed its performance under low (50 mg/kg) and high (150 mg/kg) Cd conditions. Microalgae co-treatment increased Cd accumulation in roots, stems and leaves by 82.01 %, 14.83 % and 8.04 % under low Cd stress, and by 40.26 %, 86.40 % and 28.

Water-extracted Perilla frutescens increases endometrial receptivity though leukemia inhibitory factor-dependent expression of integrins.

The leaves and stems of Perilla frutescens var. acuta Kudo (PF) have been used to prevent threatened abortion in traditional medicine in the East Asian countries. Because reduced receptivity of endometrium is a cause of abortion, we analyzed the action of PF on the endometrial receptivity. PF increased the level of leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), a major cytokine regulating endometrial receptivity, and LIF receptor in human endometrial Ishikawa cells. The PF-induced LIF expression was mediated by c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 pathways. Adhesion between Ishikawa cells and trophoblasti

Bioactive compounds from Perilla frutescens modulate multiple cell death pathways and signaling networks in cancer therapy.

Perilla frutescens, an edible medicinal plant from East Asia, produces diverse bioactive phytochemicals with anticancer activity, including perillaldehyde (PAH), rosmarinic acid (RA), luteolin, apigenin, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). These compounds exert multi-target anticancer effects through apoptosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis. PAH triggers ferroptosis in gastric cancer via the System Xc-/GSH/GPX4 axis and P62-Keap1-Nrf2 pathway, while inducing protective autophagy in colorectal cancer through SRD5A1 and PI3K/AKT modulation. RA directly binds KRAS(G12C) and suppresses NSCLC via KRAS/AKT

Genome-wide association study to identification of candidate genes influencing key seed traits in Perilla frutescens.

BACKGROUND: Perilla frutescens is a widely cultivated annual crop in East Asia, valued for its oil-rich seeds and edible leaves. The seeds are abundant in functional compounds such as unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, and oil-extraction by-products are used as protein-rich animal feed and organic fertilizer. Despite its economic and nutritional significance, the genetic basis underlying major seed traits in Perilla remains poorly understood. RESULTS: To investigate the genetic architecture of key seed traits, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 61,53

[Genome-wide identification of PfLACS in Perilla frutescens and functional analysis of PfLACS1 mediating lipid synthesis].

Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. is a characteristic oil crop rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in its seeds, holding significant potential for development and utilization. Long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase (LACS) plays a crucial regulatory role in plant lipid metabolism by activating free fatty acids into fatty acyl-CoA. In this study, to deeply analyze the functional characterization of the LACS gene in perilla lipid synthesis and storage, PfLACS sequences were identified from the genomic and transcriptomic data of P. frutescens. Omics tools were employed to analyze their sequence character

Perilla frutescens seeds enhance lamb immunity and antioxidant capacity via the microbiota-gut-liver-muscle axis.

BACKGROUND: Perilla frutescens seeds (PFS) are gaining recognition as a natural alternative to antibiotics in livestock, supporting sustainable farming and animal health. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms through which PFS influence host immune function and antioxidant capacity, especially via the gut-liver-muscle axis, remain largely unknown. This study employed an integrative multi-omics approach to elucidate how PFS supplementation modulates the microbiota-gut-liver-muscle axis and enhances immune and antioxidant functions in lambs. RESULTS: PFS supplementation markedly improved

Rosmarinic Acid Enriched Fraction from Perilla frutescens Leaves Strongly Protects Indomethacin-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Rats.

Gastric ulcers are a common problem in upper gastrointestinal tract (GI) disorders. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most aggressive factors leading to inducing gastric ulcers. Natural products with lower toxicity and safety are currently sought as a potential source to minimize the effect of the gastric ulcers. Perilla frutescens or Nga-mon (in Thai) leaves are rich in rosmarinic acid (RA), which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. This study investigates the protective effect of ethanolic extract (EE) and aqueous fraction (AF) from Perilla

Orally delivered Perilla frutescens-derived nanovesicles regulate the gut-kidney biointerface to attenuate hyperuricemia-associated renal injury.

Hyperuricemia-associated renal injury involves coordinated disturbances in urate transport, tubular inflammation, and gut-kidney metabolic homeostasis. Here, we evaluated Perilla frutescens-derived exosome-like nanovesicles (PLENs) as an orally deliverable natural vesicle platform for this condition. PLENs showed stable nanoscale vesicular features and maintained structural compatibility under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. In potassium oxonate/hypoxanthine-induced hyperuricemic mice, oral PLENs reduced urate burden, preserved renal function, and alleviated tubular injury and early fib
