Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of the upper extremity is much less frequent and aetiologically more heterogeneous than lower extremity PAD. The clinical approach to patients with upper extremity PAD must consider a range of distinctive features regarding symptoms, physical findings and diagnostic strategies. This review focusses on these specific characteristics of upper extremity PAD and the new developments in this field. Arteriosclerotic subclavian artery obstruction, large vessel vasculitis, thoracic outlet syndrome and secondary Raynaud's phenomenon are four pivotal causes and manifest

Lower extremity peripheral artery disease is a manifestation of systemic atherosclerotic disease, which affects over 8 million Americans and conveys a significant health burden globally. Although PAD can be asymptomatic and subclinical, it is associated with a reduction in functional capacity and quality of life when symptomatic, and, in its most severe form, is a major cause of limb amputation. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) commonly results from progressive narrowing of arteries in the lower extremities. Previous studies have shown that PAD is associated with a significantly elevated risk

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a disease characterised by narrowing and blockade of peripheral arteries, usually based on underlying obliterating atherosclerosis. According to the results of large epidemiological studies, the risk of PAD in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is fourfold higher compared to non-diabetic population. Patients with DM and PAD have a high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Diabetes worsens the prognosis of patients with PAD; the onset of PAD in diabetics occurs at an earlier age, the course is faster than in non-diabetic patients and the disease

The signs and symptoms of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAD), including claudication, rest pain, and tissue loss, are consequences of compromised bioenergetics and oxidative tissue injury within the affected lower extremities. Compromised bioenergetics is the result of a combination of low blood flow through diseased arteries and diminished adenosine triphosphate production by dysfunctional mitochondria. The tissue injury appears to be secondary to increased production of reactive oxygen species by dysfunctional mitochondria and by inflammation, in association with ischemia and ischem

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that women with lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) would have greater mobility loss and faster functional decline than men with PAD.
BACKGROUND: Whether rates of mobility loss or functional decline differ between men and women with PAD is currently unknown.
METHODS: Three hundred eighty men and women with PAD completed the 6-min walk, were assessed for mobility disability, and underwent measures of 4-m walking velocity at baseline and annually for up to 4 years. Computed tomography-assessed calf muscle characteristics were measured biannually. Outco

There are two points of interplay of chronic kidney (CKD) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD): CKD has been recognized as one of the main factors for presence of PAD, and PAD has been defined as a useful tool for risk stratification of CKD population. Peripheral arterial disease in patients with CKD is a frequent finding, even in those without symptoms. This review tends to describe determinants for occurrence of arterial disease in chronic kidney disease patients and necessity for its screening.

In addition to conservative therapy with intensive walking training, endovascular revascularisation and open vascular surgical revascularisation are of high importance in the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. Over the past decades, endovascular therapy has developed considerably and is now the treatment of choice for most vascular segments. The use of different devices has been shown to be beneficial for different vessel segments. Primary stent angioplasty has been shown to be superior to balloon angioplasty with secondary stent implantation for the treatment of iliac lesions. Femoropo

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) describes the partial or complete occlusion of blood flow in the distal arteries of the body. A decreased arterial patency may occur due to a reduction in the elasticity or diameter of the vessel. The goal of interventions is to decrease incidence and reduce complications by identifying and minimizing the primary causes. This paper discusses PAD affecting the aortoiliac, common femoral, and femoropopliteal arteries. In a significant portion of the population, PAD may lack usual symptoms such as limb pain, claudication, and diminished pulses. Imaging techniques

Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) often have polyvascular atherosclerosis and are at increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke, and major adverse limb events (MALE), such as amputation and acute limb ischemia. Therefore, the aim of conservative treatment is the reduction of MACE and MALE. In patients with intermittent claudication, the aim is also to extend walking distance. Management of risk factors includes smoking cessation, statin therapy, reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (targe

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is the result of atherosclerosis in the lower limb arteries, which can give rise to intermittent claudication (IC), limb ulceration, infections, and, in some circumstances, amputation. As a result of PAD, patients are frequently limited in both walking duration and speed. These ambulatory deficits impact both functional capacity and quality of life. The prevalence of PAD is increasing, and patients with this diagnosis have high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. A comprehensive approach is required to improve outcomes in patients with PAD and include toba

The risk of in-stent restenosis has been dramatically reduced with the use of thin-strut nitinol and balloon-expandable drug-eluting stents in the peripheral arterial territory. However, the presence of a permanent endovascular device is linked to a series of events that can lead to restenosis and stent thrombosis. Significant advances in the technology of bioresorbable materials have delivered the potential for fully bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS), which are able to mechanically support the artery wall and elute an anti-restenotic drug for a predetermined time period after which the scaffold b

Whether symptomatic or not, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), atherosclerosis in the arteries of the lower extremities, is a common disorder in the general population. The prevalence increases with age and under the influence of vascular risk factors. The most classic symptomatic expression of PAD is intermittent claudication. However, the majority of patients with PAD is asymptomatic or has leg symptoms other than classic intermittent claudication. Both symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects with PAD have increased mortality rates, mainly due to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular expressions

The North American Symptomatic Carotid Endarterectomy Trial (NASCET) confirmed that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can significantly cut the risk of stroke in patients with moderate and severe blockage. The standard today is that patients who have internal carotid artery stenosis > 70% with associated symptoms and who are appropriate surgical candidates should be offered CEA. Aneurysmal disease, a growing public health concern, poses the threat of death from rupture, and lower extremity arterial occlusive disease poses a significant risk of critical leg ischemia and limb loss. Both conditions in

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a chronic atherosclerotic disease of the lower extremities associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as destructive limb-associated complications such as intermittent claudication and ischemic rest pain. While revascularization with surgical and endovascular techniques is important to prevent limb loss in patients with critical limb ischemia, it fails to address the early symptoms of PAD or the systemic cardiovascular risks associated with PAD. The management of PAD incorporates aggressive lifestyle modification and comprehensive

Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, both overt and subclinical, are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The association between thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and cardiovascular risk has been demonstrated in large epidemiological studies and meta-analyses and is now considered a U-shaped curve. Several pathophysiological mechanisms linking thyroid and cardiovascular disease are known; however, specific clinical complications of peripheral arterial disease as endpoints of clinical trials have not been adequately investigated. The potential mechanisms li

Successful revascularization of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) requires a comprehensive understanding of the risk population and the available treatment options. Even the urgency of revascularization varies widely depending on the clinical presentation. Patients with intermittent claudication should undergo a structured exercise program before revascularization may become necessary, whereas acute limb ischemia is a medical emergency and must be revascularized within a few hours. Endovascular treatment techniques have evolved rapidly over the past 20 years. New technologies and
