Pesticide Mixtures Cause Short-Term, Reversible Effects on the Function of Autotrophic Periphyton Assemblages.

In a laboratory experiment we investigated the effects of pesticide mixtures on the structure and function of freshwater biofilms, with focus on their photoautotrophic component. We identified 6 herbicides and 1 fungicide commonly found in Swedish streams at relatively high concentrations and created 3 ternary mixtures that were tested in concentration series ranging from observed environmental concentrations to up to 100 times higher. Biofilms were exposed to these pesticide mixtures for 8 d and then allowed to recover for another 12 d. Our results show a rapid and consistent inhibition of ph

Removal of sulfonamide and enrofloxacin from water by periphyton under different nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Periphyton is an emerging biological technology for water purification. However, the removal effect of periphyton on antibiotic contaminants in water under different nitrogen and phosphorus levels remains largely unknown. In this study, four nitrogen and phosphorus levels [N-P (mg·L-1): 2-0.2, 5-0.5, 8-0.8, 11-1.1] were set up to grow periphyton outdoors in plastic crates. The growth, photosynthe-tic activity, species composition, and removal of sulfonamide and enrofloxacin were simulated at a medium scale. The results showed that biomass of the surrounding organisms increased with the increas

Ecosystem Controls on Methylmercury Production by Periphyton Biofilms in a Contaminated Stream: Implications for Predictive Modeling.

Periphyton biofilms produce a substantial fraction of the overall monomethylmercury (MMHg) flux in East Fork Poplar Creek, an industrially contaminated, freshwater creek in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We examined periphyton MMHg production across seasons, locations, and light conditions using mercury stable isotopes. Methylation and demethylation rate potentials (km, trans av and kd, trans av , respectively) were calculated using a transient availability kinetic model. Light exposure and season were significant predictors of km, trans av , with greater values in full light exposure and in the summer

Net methylmercury production in 2 contrasting stream sediments and associated accumulation and toxicity to periphyton.

Periphyton uptake of bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg) may be an important entryway into the food web of many stream ecosystems where periphyton can be dominant primary producers. The net production of MeHg in stream sediment, its bioaccumulation in periphyton, and the potential toxicity of divalent Hg (Hg[II]) and MeHg in sediment to periphyton were investigated with a 67-d in situ incubation experiment using chemical exposure substrates containing either a fine-grained, organic-rich or a sandy, low-organic sediment, each amended with varying concentrations of mercuric chloride. Methylmerc

Importance of sulfate reducing bacteria in mercury methylation and demethylation in periphyton from Bolivian Amazon region.

Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are important mercury methylators in sediments, but information on mercury methylators in other compartments is ambiguous. To investigate SRB involvement in methylation in Amazonian periphyton, the relationship between Hg methylation potential and SRB (Desulfobacteraceae, Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfovibrionaceae) abundance in Eichhornia crassipes and Polygonum densiflorum root associated periphyton was examined. Periphyton subsamples of each macrophyte were amended with electron donors (lactate, acetate and propionate) or inhibitors (molybdate) of sulfate reduct

Thiol and metal contents in periphyton exposed to elevated copper and zinc concentrations: a field and microcosm study.

Phytochelatins are metal-binding polypeptides produced by algae under metal exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of metal concentration variations in natural systems on periphyton at the biochemical level by analyzing its intracellular thiol content, in particular phytochelatins. To that purpose, two field campaigns were conducted in a stream subject to an increase of dissolved metal concentrations (particularly Cu and Zn) during rain events, which results in an increase of their accumulation in periphyton. At background metal concentrations, several thiols were detec

Does exposure timing of macrolide antibiotics affect the development of river periphyton? Insights into the structure and function.

Discharged sewage is the dominant source of urban river pollution. Macrolide antibiotics have emerged as prominent contaminants, which are frequently detected in sewage and rivers and pose a threat to aquatic microbial community. As a typical primary producer, periphyton is crucial for maintaining the biodiversity and functions of aquatic ecosystem. However, effects of antibiotic exposure time as well as the recovery process of periphyton remain undetermined. In the present study, five exposure scenarios of two typical macrolides, erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX) were investigated at

Influence of a chlor-alkali superfund site on mercury bioaccumulation in periphyton and low-trophic level fauna.

In Berlin, New Hampshire, USA, the Androscoggin River flows adjacent to a former chlor-alkali facility that is a US Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site and source of mercury (Hg) to the river. The present study was conducted to determine the fate and bioaccumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) to lower trophic-level taxa in the river. Surface sediment directly adjacent to the source showed significantly elevated MeHg (10-40× increase, mean ± standard deviation [SD]: 20.1 ± 24.8 ng g(-1) dry wt) and total mercury (THg; 10-30× increase, mean ± SD: 2045 ± 2669 ng g(-1) dry wt) compared wit

Cyanobacteria enhance methylmercury production: a hypothesis tested in the periphyton of two lakes in the Pantanal floodplain, Brazil.

The toxic potential of mercury (Hg) in aquatic systems is due to the presence and production of methylmercury (MeHg). Recent studies in tropical floodplain environments showed that periphyton associated with the roots of aquatic macrophytes produce MeHg. Periphyton communities are the first link in the food chain and one of the main MeHg sources in aquatic environments. The aim of this work was to test the hypotheses that the algal community structure affects potential methylation, and ecologically distinct communities with different algal and bacterial densities directly affect the formation

Total mercury and methylmercury accumulation in periphyton of Boreal Shield lakes: influence of watershed physiographic characteristics.

Little is known about Hg accumulation in littoral communities, especially in periphyton biofilm of unperturbed lakes. The objectives of this study were to investigate and establish relationships between total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in periphyton communities of Boreal lakes and watershed physiographic and lake morphometric characteristics. This study was carried out on 23 Boreal Canadian Shield lakes located between 47-50 degrees N and 73-77 degrees W. Periphyton was sampled on rocks, the dominant periphyton substrate in the littoral zone of these lakes. Periphyto

Consortia cultivation of the Desulfobacterota from macrophyte periphyton: tool for increasing the cultivation of microorganisms involved in mercury methylation.

Invasive macrophytes are a persistent environmental problem in aquatic ecosystems. They also cause potential health issues, since periphyton colonizing their aquatic roots are hot spot of mercury methylation. Because periphytons are at the base of the trophic chain, the produced methylmercury is bioamplified through the food webs. In this work, a consortia cultivation approach was applied in order to investigate methylators in the periphyton of Ludwigia sp., an invasive macrophyte. Five growth conditions were used in order to favor the growth of different sulfate reducers, the major mercury me

Impact of wastewater on the microbial diversity of periphyton and its tolerance to micropollutants in an engineered flow-through channel system.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play an important role in retaining organic matter and nutrients but to a lesser extent micropollutants. Therefore, treated wastewater is recognized as a major source of multiple stressors, including complex mixtures of micropollutants. These can potentially affect microbial communities in the receiving water bodies and the ecological functions they provide. In this study, we evaluated in flow-through channels the consequences of an exposure to a mixture of stream water and different percentages of urban WWTP effluent, ranging from 0% to 80%, on the microbia

Mercury methylation and hydrogen sulfide production among unexpected strains isolated from periphyton of two macrophytes of the Amazon.

The periphyton of macrophytes had previously been identified as important spots for mercury methylation in the Amazon basin, but the microorganisms that facilitate methylation in such compartment are still to be identified. Here, bacteria were isolated from periphyton associated with Eichhornia crassipes and Polygonum densiflorum in Widdel and Pfennig medium and tested for mercury methylation with a stable isotope tracer technique using (198)HgCl, hydrogen sulfide production and molybdate inhibition. Three Pleomorphomona spp., one unidentified Deltaproteobacteria, two Klebsiella spp., and one

Periphyton and Flocculent Materials Are Important Ecological Compartments Supporting Abundant and Diverse Mercury Methylator Assemblages in the Florida Everglades.

Mercury (Hg) methylation in the Florida Everglades is of great environmental concern because of its adverse effects on human and wildlife health through biomagnification in aquatic food webs. Periphyton and flocculant materials (floc) overlaying peat soil are important ecological compartments producing methylmercury (MeHg) in this ecosystem. These compartments retain higher concentrations of MeHg than did soil at study sites across nutrient and/or sulfate gradient(s). To better understand what controls Hg methylation in these compartments, the present study explored the structures and abundanc

Blinded by the light: Increased chlorophyll fluorescence of herbicide-exposed periphyton masks unfavorable structural responses during exposure and recovery.

In surface waters within agricultural catchments, periphyton - i.e., biofilms containing algae, heterotrophs, and associated detritus - is subjected to multiple stressors including herbicides. Although herbicide effects on periphyton are frequently studied, the focus has been on photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides while other modes of toxic action have received little attention. Against this background, a 21-days-lasting bioassay was conducted, during which mature periphytic communities were exposed to the carotenoid-biosynthesis-inhibiting herbicide diflufenican for 12 days (up to 10 μg/L; n

Phototrophic periphyton tolerance reflects in situ exposure to pharmaceuticals overtime - A translocation study using a pollution-induced community approach (PICT).

Rivers worldwide are contaminated by pharmaceuticals. This in situ study investigated the association relationship between in situ exposure to pharmaceuticals and effects on phototrophic periphyton. We performed a translocation experiment in a French river, considering two sites exposed to different levels of pharmaceutical contamination, as confirmed using polar organic chemical integrative samplers. After a 4-week growth period, periphytic biofilms were moved, or not, between the sites, to simulate a 6-week period of restoration (downstream to upstream) or deterioration (upstream to downstre

Linking Microbial Activities and Low-Molecular-Weight Thiols to Hg Methylation in Biofilms and Periphyton from High-Altitude Tropical Lakes in the Bolivian Altiplano.

The sources and factors controlling concentrations of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in aquatic ecosystems need to be better understood. Here, we investigated Hg transformations in sediments, periphyton associated with green algae's or aquatic plants, and benthic biofilms from the Lake Titicaca hydrosystem and compared them to the occurrence of active methylating microorganisms and extracellular Hg ligands. Intense Hg methylation was found in benthic biofilms and green algae's periphyton, while it remained low in sediments and aquatic plants' periphyton. Demethylation varied between compartments but

Towards Mechanistic Hydrological Limits: A Literature Synthesis to Improve the Study of Direct Linkages between Sediment Transport and Periphyton Accrual in Gravel-Bed Rivers.

Altered hydrological, sediment, and nutrient regimes can lead to dramatic increases in periphyton abundance in rivers below impoundments. Flushing flows are a commonly adopted strategy to manage the excess periphyton that can accumulate, but in practice they often prove ineffective. Designing hydrological regimes that include flushing flows may be overlooking key processes in periphyton removal, particularly the role of abrasion and molar action induced by substrate movement. Setting flow targets which aim to initiate substrate movement are likely to improve periphyton removal, but an understa

Cross-habitat interactions drive methylmercury contamination in a disturbed river ecosystem: novel metagenomic and biogeochemical insights.

Understanding contaminant dynamics in ecosystems requires considering interactions between habitats-an aspect often overlooked in research. Mercury (Hg) studies typically focus on methylmercury (MeHg) production in sediments, often neglecting the role of biofilms such as periphyton. This study analyzes sediments and periphyton in a disturbed river using biogeochemical and metagenomic approaches. We found that microbial communities differed between habitats, but Hg-methylating microbes were taxonomically similar, with higher abundance in sediments. Organic matter (OM), a key Hg vector, likely a

Distribution of total and methylmercury in different ecosystem compartments in the Everglades: implications for mercury bioaccumulation.

We analyzed Hg species distribution patterns among ecosystem compartments in the Everglades at the landscape level in order to explore the implications of Hg distribution for Hg bioaccumulation and to investigate major biogeochemical processes that are pertinent to the observed Hg distribution patterns. At an Everglade-wide scale, THg concentrations were significantly increased in the following order: periphyton<flocculent material (floc)<soil, while relatively high MeHg concentrations were observed in floc and periphyton. Differences in the methylation potential, THg concentration, and MeHg r
