We report on a colon perforation with peritonitis which remained clinically undetected until the 4th day post trauma although the patient suffered from lumbalgia-like symptoms. He then developed an acute abdomen with sudden onset, being caused by a sigmoidal rupture and a consecutive diffuse peritonitis. A colon resection was performed according to the Hartmann procedure. We studied transportation of the colloidal gold labelled albumin 0.5-24 hours after intraabdominal administration of the tracer in normal rabbits and rabbits with experimental diffuse peritonitis (total 24 rabbits). As seen in the scanning electron microscope, peritoneal mesothelial cells of the mouse diaphragm, anterior abdominal wall and intestinal serosa carry numerous microvilli. These microvilli are absent over certain areas of the cell surface and are sometimes, interlocked in meshwork patterns or coronal formation. The apical cell membranes of the mesothelium at the base of the microvilli, are invaginated by many plasmalemmal vesicles and vacuoles and carry a number of protruding spherical structures. Deep circular craters, giving the impression of stomata, are also visible.

BACKGROUND: Mesothelial cell transplantation has been suggested to improve mesothelial repair after surgery, recurrent peritonitis and peritoneal dialysis.
METHODS: In this study we evaluated mesothelial cell transplantation during the resolution phase of experimentally thioglycollate-induced peritonitis in rats. To this end 4 x 10(6) DiO-labeled autologous mesothelial cells were transplanted 1 week after peritonitis induction.
