Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in green mussels (Perna viridis) from shell-fish markets of Thailand.

Mussels filter large volumes of water and can concentrate pathogenic organisms, which may act as potential vehicles of transmission to the consumer. A survey study was carried out to investigate the presence of Cryptosporidium protozoan parasites in green mussels (Perna viridis), the smussles pecies most destined for consumption in Thailand. In total, 56 samples were examined from Bangkok (n = 24) and Samut Prakan (n = 32) a wholesale shell-fish markets located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The market for green mussels was closed to the mussel culture placed along the coastal line and

A method for embryo-larval development toxicity testing on an endemic and commercially important mussel, Perna canaliculus.

Bivalve embryo-larval development tests are widely used as standardized bioassays for assessing the toxicity of chemicals and environmental samples on early life stages. The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus; GLM), however, was unsuitable for toxicity testing due to reliance on suitable quality seawater (SW) requiring the use of chelating agents during embryo-larval development. Given the cultural, environmental, and economic importance of this species in Aotearoa New Zealand, we developed a new bioassay to accurately assess toxicity, including trace metals. Using an iterative experimenta

P-glycoprotein expression in Perna viridis after exposure to Prorocentrum lima, a dinoflagellate producing DSP toxins.

Bivalves naturally exposed to toxic algae have mechanisms to prevent from harmful effects of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins. However, quite few studies have examined the mechanisms associated, and the information currently available is still insufficient. Multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) is ubiquitous in aquatic invertebrates and plays an important role in defense against xenobiotics. Here, to explore the roles of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the DSP toxins resistance in shellfish, complete cDNA of P-gp gene in the mussel Perna viridis was cloned and analyzed. The accumulation of okad

The effect of green mussel ( Perna viridis) shells' hydroxyapatite application on alkaline phosphatase levels in rabbit femur bone defect.

BACKGROUND: Non-union fractures can be prevented with bone grafts, such as hydroxyapatite made from green mussel shells. Green mussel shells contain a high percentage of HA, making them a promising alternative for bone healing. This research aims to reveal the effectiveness of green mussel shell HA as a bone substitute material and to provide knowledge for further research. METHODS: This research was conducted for four months using a true experimental research method with a post-test-only control group design. This study used 36 New Zealand rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus) which were divided

Efficacy of marinades against Listeria monocytogenes cells in suspension or associated with green shell mussels (Perna canaliculus).

In order to determine the listericidal efficacies of three marinades used in the production of marinated green shell mussels (Perna canaliculus), decimal reduction times (D values) were determined for a mixture of seven strains of Listeria monocytogenes exposed to marinades in the presence and absence of mussels. With an acetic acid (1.5%, wt/vol) marinade, calculated D values in the presence and absence of mussels were 77.3 and 33.3 h, respectively. Likewise, for an acetic acid (0.75%)-lactic acid (0.75%) marinade and an acetic acid (1.5%)-Glucono Delta-Lactone (0.2%)-based marinade, the D va

Oxidative Damage and Antioxidants as Markers for the Selection of Emersion Hardening Treatments in GreenshellTM Mussel Juveniles (Perna canaliculus).

Transport out of the water is one of the most challenging events for juvenile Perna canaliculus and can be a highly inefficient process, with many juveniles subsequently being lost following extended periods of emersion. Hardening techniques offer a possible method for reducing transport-related stress. In this study, different hardening treatments (short, long and intermittent sub-lethal emersion) were used to prepare ~1.2 mm P.canaliculus for transport (20 h) and subsequent reoxygenation stress during re-immersion (i.e., recovery). The oxidative stress responses, resettlement behaviour, resp

When nanoplastics (NPs) meet algae: Heteroaggregates exacerbate bioaccumulation, immunotoxicity, and microbial dysbiosis in the green mussel (Perna viridis).

Heteroaggregates (HAs) formed by nanoplastics (NPs) and microalgae occur ubiquitously in natural aquatic systems. However, their influence on the toxicokinetics and biological effects of NPs in marine mussels remains largely unknown. Here, the green mussels (Perna viridis) were exposed to NPs and HAs at their environmentally relevant concentrations for 21 d, followed by a 7-d depuration phase. The effects on toxicokinetics, immunological responses, and microbiota of digestive gland were evaluated. The results showed that HAs increased the uptake rate constant in digestive gland by 5.5-fold and

Occurrence of hepatitis A virus in Philippine cupped oysters (Magallana bilineata) and green mussels (Perna viridis) collected in the Philippines.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) causes acute hepatitis through ingestion of contaminated food and water, with bivalve molluscs as common vehicles of transmission. As filter feeders, HAV concentrates in their digestive tissues when grown in contaminated waters. In 2020, the Philippines produced nearly 75 MT of shellfish. However, maintaining proper sanitation in growing areas remains challenging, and data on the occurrence of HAV in these commercially significant shellfish is lacking. This study aimed to detect HAV in Philippine cupped oysters (Magallana bilineata), green mussels (Perna vir

Physiological and biochemical response in green mussel Perna viridis subjected to continuous chlorination: Perspective on cooling water discharge criteria.

Heavy infestation by Perna viridis has been observed in the sub-seabed seawater intake tunnel and CWS of a tropical coastal power station in-spite of continuous low dose chlorination regime (0.2 ± 0.1 mg L-1) (CLDC), indicating periodical settlement and growth. Continuous arrival of mussels (colonized in the sub seabed tunnel intake section) at the pump house indicated that the mussels were able to tolerate and survive in a chlorinated environment, for varying time periods and were dislodged when they become weak and subsequent death, leading to flushing out of the system. In the present study

Arcobacter pernae sp. nov. and Arcobacter rhizosphaerae sp. nov., two novel bacterial species isolated from the seagrass bed.

Three bacterial strains, YIC-464T (isolated from the intestinal tract of Perna mussels), YIC-310T and YIC-80 (both isolated from rhizosphere soil), were obtained from a seagrass bed in Weihai, PR China. A polyphasic taxonomic study revealed that strains YIC-464T and YIC-310T represent two novel species within the genus Arcobacter. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the closest relative of strains YIC-464T, YIC-310T and YIC-80 is Arcobacter roscoffensis KCTC 52423T, with sequence similarities of 96.8, 98.0 and 98.0%, respectively. Potential Health Risks from Heavy Metal in Green Mussels (Perna Viridis) From the Southeastern Part of the Bay of Bengal.

The Southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal is increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution, posing significant risks to both aquatic life and human health. In this context, the contamination levels of six heavy metals-Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Iron (Fe)-were assessed in the soft tissues of Green mussels (Perna viridis) from five key sites: Matamuhuri, Moheshkhali, Bakhkhali, Naf, and St. Martin. The aim was to assess the public health risks associated with the consumption of these mussels. The metal concentrations detected across the sites were as

First report of Toxoplasma gondii sporulated oocysts and Giardia duodenalis in commercial green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) in New Zealand.

Pollution of marine ecosystems with the protozoan parasites Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis can be studied using bivalve shellfish as biosentinels. Although evidence suggests that these parasites are present in New Zealand coastal waters, the extent of protozoal pollution has not been investigated. This study used optimised molecular methods to detect the presence of Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis and T. gondii in commercially sourced green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), an endemic species found throughout coastal New Zealand. Development stage of cryopreserved mussel (Perna canaliculus) larvae influences post-thaw impact on shell formation, organogenesis, neurogenesis, feeding ability and survival.

Cryopreservation of genetic material from farmed aquatic species is a valuable technique to advance selective breeding programs for stock improvement. In this study, effects of cryopreservation on development of trochophore and D-stage larvae of Greenshell™ mussel (Perna canaliculus) were evaluated through histology, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and confocal microscopy. Larvae of both life stages were motile immediately post-thawing, but survival declined rapidly from 4 days post-fertilisation (dpf). At 18 dpf, ~23% of non-cryopreserved control larvae had progressed to the p

Therapeutic potential of (1 → 4)-linked glucuronoglucan from an edible brown mussel Perna indica: A promising candidate for anti-inflammatory and antidyslipidemic nutraceuticals.

The brown mussel, Perna indica (Kuriakose & Nair, 1976), family Mytilidae, is harvested along the southwest coast of India for its rich nutritional composition and therapeutic potential. This study highlights the role of PIP-1, a (1 → 4)-linked glucuronoglucan derived from Perna indica composed of repeating pyranose units of β-d-glucose (Glcp) and α-D-glucuronic acid (GlcAp), in alleviating chronic diseases. PIP-1 demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory activity by attenuating 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and cyclooxygenases (COXs) (IC₅₀ ≤ 1.5 mg/mL), with preferential COX-2 selectivity and reduced ni
