Maporal Hantavirus Causes Mild Pathology in Deer Mice (Peromyscus maniculatus).

Rodent-borne hantaviruses can cause two human diseases with many pathological similarities: hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the western hemisphere and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in the eastern hemisphere. Each virus is hosted by specific reservoir species without conspicuous disease. HCPS-causing hantaviruses require animal biosafety level-4 (ABSL-4) containment, which substantially limits experimental research of interactions between the viruses and their reservoir hosts. Maporal virus (MAPV) is a South American hantavirus not known to cause disease in humans, thus it

Aberrant growth and pattern formation in Peromyscus hybrid placental development.

Crosses between the North American deer mouse species Peromyscus maniculatus (BW) and P. polionotus (PO) produce dramatic asymmetric developmental effects. BW females mated to PO males (female bw × male po) produce viable growth-retarded offspring. In contrast, PO females mated to BW males (female PO × male BW) produce overgrown but dysmorphic conceptuses. Most female PO × male BW offspring are dead by midgestation; those surviving to later time points display numerous defects reminiscent of several diseases. The hybrid effects are particularly pronounced in the placenta. Here we examine place

The neural basis of species-specific defensive behaviour in Peromyscus mice.

Evading imminent threat from predators is critical for animal survival. Effective defensive strategies can vary, even between closely related species. However, the neural basis of such species-specific behaviours remains poorly understood1-4. Here we find that two sister species of deer mice (genus Peromyscus)5 show different responses to the same looming stimulus: Peromyscus maniculatus, which occupies densely vegetated habitats, predominantly escapes, whereas the open field specialist, Peromyscus polionotus, briefly freezes. This difference arises from species-specific escape thresholds, is

Genetic Analysis of the Stereotypic Phenotype in Peromyscus maniculatus (deer mice).

Peromyscus maniculatus, including the laboratory stock BW, have been used as a model organism for autism spectrum disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder because of the high occurrence of stereotypy. Several studies have identified neurological and environmental components of the phenotype; however, the heritability of the phenotype has not been examined. This study characterizes the incidence and heritability of vertical jumping stereotypy (VS) and backflipping (BF) behavior in the BW stock of the Peromyscus Genetic Stock Center, which are indicative of autism spectrum disorders. In additi

The Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) as an Enzootic Reservoir of Plague in California.

It has long been theorized that deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are a primary reservoir of Yersinia pestis in California. However, recent research from other parts of the western USA has implicated deer mice as spillover hosts during epizootic plague transmission. This retrospective study analyzed deer mouse data collected for plague surveillance by public health agencies in California from 1971 to 2016 to help elucidate the role of deer mice in plague transmission. The fleas most commonly found on deer mice were poor vectors of Y. pestis and occurred in insufficient numbers to maintain tra

Characterization of a male reproductive transcriptome for Peromyscus eremicus (Cactus mouse).

BACKGROUND: Violence in British psychiatric hospitals appears to be escalating, with nursing staff the most frequent victims of assault. There is also public concern about violence on the part of individuals with mental health problems. In this climate, assessing a patient's risk of violent behaviour has become an important part of mental health care. However, little research has been published into how mental health nurses undertake such assessments in their day-to-day clinical practice. AIM: The study focused on how mental health nurses make assessments of risk in clinical crisis situations

Evolutionary expansion of the corticospinal system is linked to dexterity in Peromyscus mice.

Animals have evolved behavioral variation to adapt to distinct environmental features. The expansion of neuron number is a potential neural mechanism underlying this behavioral adaptation. Corticospinal neurons (CSNs) are a classic example: an expansion in the corticospinal system in the primate lineage has been hypothesized to underlie their exceptional dexterity. However, the role of CSN number in behavior has been difficult to assess due to the large evolutionary distance between primates and less dexterous taxa with fewer CSNs. Here, we use deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to overcome th

FKBP5 expression in Peromyscus leucopus reflects land cover and climate predictability.

Anthropogenic activities such as urbanization, agricultural expansion, and climate change create landscapes of stress for wildlife. In vertebrates, neurophysiological stress responses are regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, with the co-chaperone FKBP5, playing a key role in modulating glucocorticoid receptor (GR) sensitivity through negative feedback. Variation in FKBP5 expression influences how individuals cope with stressors (i.e., endocrine flexibility): lower FKBP5 expression is associated with more efficient activation and termination of stress responses, whereas h

Parasite species co-occurrence patterns on Peromyscus: Joint species distribution modelling.

Hosts are often infested by multiple parasite species, but it is often unclear whether patterns of parasite co-occurrence are driven by parasite habitat requirements or parasite species interactions. Using data on infestation patterns of ectoparasitic arthropods (fleas, trombiculid mites, cuterebrid botflies) from deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), we analyzed species associations using joint species distribution modelling. We also experimentally removed a flea (Orchopeas leucopus) from a subset of deer mice to examine the effect on other common ectoparasite species. We found that the mite (N

Effects of X-ray irradiation and housing conditions on mitochondria in Peromyscus maniculatus.

Challenging environmental conditions, such as exposure to ionizing radiation, can induce oxidative stress within mitochondria. However, organisms show variation in their capacity to cope with cellular stress. This study aimed to identify how housing conditions influence mitochondrial stress responses under exposure to radiation. We used North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), kept in standard rodent boxes or large semi-natural enclosures that allowed for natural levels of physical activity and social structures under ambient atmospheric conditions. Animals from each housing conditio

Behavioral and endocrine consequences of placentophagia in male California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

Ingestion of placenta by mammalian mothers can lead to changes in pain sensitivity, hormone levels, and behavioral responses to newborns. In some biparental mammals, males, in addition to females, ingest placenta when their offspring are born. In the monogamous, biparental California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), males first become attracted to placenta when cohabitating with their pregnant mate, and virgin males administered placenta are less neophobic than males given oil vehicle. In this study, we investigated the effects of placentophagia on pain sensitivity, anxiety-like behavior, beha

Modulation of endocrine pathways by 4,4'-DDE in the deer mouse Peromyscus maniculatus.

4,4'-DDT and 4,4'-DDE are widespread environmental contaminants that cause eggshell thinning in birds, altered sex ratios in the American alligator, and changes in the anal-genital distance in rodents. These contaminants are known to cause some of their toxicity by altering steroid receptor-mediated mechanisms. However, chemical-specific alterations in the expression of hormone-metabolizing enzymes may also be a mechanism for endocrine disruption, by altering the half-life of hormones in critical tissues. Previously, we showed that 4,4'-DDE causes a dose-dependent increase in ethoxyresorufin-O

Helicobacter spp. in wild mice (Peromyscus leucopus) found in laboratory animal facilities.

Wild rodents are a potential source for pathogen introduction into laboratory animal research facilities. A study was designed to assess wild mice found at our institution by infectious disease surveillance. Wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were captured with live capture traps placed in areas in which wild mice had been reported in several animal facilities. Captured animals were euthanized by inhalation of CO(2), blood was collected by cardiocentesis (n = 10), and necropsy was performed (n = 8). Serum samples were negative for antibodies to mouse parvovirus (types 1 and 2), mouse

Characterization of the gut microbiome of wild Peromyscus sonoriensis in New Mexico, USA.

The microbiome is highly important to the physiologies of all multicellular organisms, particularly metazoans. However, the microbiomes of many wild animals remain understudied and poorly understood. Peromyscus mice are commonly used as models of adaptation, mental health, and human disease in biomedical research, and are also common in the environment across North America, frequently coming into close contact with humans. Additionally, Peromyscus sonoriensis are implicated as the primary reservoir for Sin Nombre hantavirus, a rare but severe disease of high morbidity and mortality in humans.

Habitat correlates with the spatial distribution of ectoparasites on Peromyscus leucopus in southern Michigan.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of habitat in determining ectoparasite distribution of Peromyscus leucopus. We tested the hypothesis that ectoparasite occurrence is associated with particular host environments and this association is stronger for ectoparasites with limited interactions (i.e., ticks) than those with frequent interactions (i.e., lice). Ectoparasites from three different groups (Acari, Siphonaptera, and Phthiraptera) were collected from P. leucopus inhabiting a number of forested habitats in southern Michigan. Measurements of plant species structure and compositio
