In the health domain, well-being is primarily assessed as autonomy and mental distress, whereas the quality of daily experience is rarely investigated. In this study, the relationship between autonomy levels and daily experience was explored. Thirty-five Italian adults with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia provided for one week real-time descriptions of daily activities and associated experiences through the Experience Sampling Method procedure. Participants were grouped based on autonomy levels assessed through Barthel Index. The relationships between activity typologies, the experiential dimens

Sociotropy and autonomy are 2 personality dimensions related to an individual's vulnerability to depression (A. T. Beck, 1983). The Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (D. A. Clark, R. A. Steer, A. T. Beck, & L. Ross, 1995) and the Personal Style Inventory (C. J. Robins et al., 1994) were developed to assess these personality dimensions independent of each other. The present study is an examination of the relationship between the 2 scales and an attempt to specify the various factors that emerge when the items of the 2 scales are integrated. Participants (N = 514) responded to the Personal Style Invento

BACKGROUND: The implementation of palliative care in China faces distinct challenges influenced by cultural and societal factors that significantly affect terminally ill patients and their families. This case study examines how palliative care interventions adapted to Chinese cultural factors such as death taboos, indirect communication styles, family-centered decision-making, and relational harmony helped empower a patient's autonomy, facilitate self-expression, and support personal transformation while aligning with Chinese cultural norms.
METHODS: This retrospective study utilized Interpre

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the perceived autonomy of people using wheeled mobility assistive devices (WMADs) in five community-based environments. To evaluate how personal, environmental, and assistive device-related factors impact the perceived autonomy of WMAD users.
METHOD: A study-specific questionnaire was used to evaluate perceived satisfaction of WMAD users with their autonomy in five environments: the Home Environment, Buildings Outside of the Home Environment, Outdoor Built Environment, Outdoor Natural Environment, and Transportation. For each environment, participants rated th

Nurses experience various types of violence in healthcare. This violence can be perpetrated by doctors, other nurses, patients, and their families, as well as other members of the healthcare team. While traditionally thought of as physical, violence may also be non-physical, that is, verbal, emotional, and psychological in nature. In this paper, we outline three categories of violence experienced by nurses: vertical, lateral, and angular. When violence occurs by someone in a position of authority like physicians, it is vertical, when occurring by someone in an equal position like other nurses,

In recent years, neurophysiological research has pushed the concept of free will towards a reductionist interpretation, largely avoiding the concept of a freely willing agent. This paper explores the ongoing debate surrounding free will, highlighting the contrasting perspectives of determinism, indeterminism (libertarianism), and compatibilism. It questions how individuals, particularly those adhering to deterministic viewpoints, can ethically navigate a world defined by causal relationships. The paper argues that reductionist approaches struggle to account for ethical responsibility and the h

Capacity, often linked with the exercise of patient autonomy, was considered again recently by the Court of Appeal in Thirumalesh Chellamal Hemachandran and Another v Sudiksha Thirumalesh (Deceased) (By her litigation friend, The Official Solicitor) and Others ([2024] EWCA Civ 896). This paper reviews that case and comments on it in the light of the two related key themes of capacity and patient autonomy. The paper concludes that only patients with capacity can exercise patient autonomy because a patient who lacks capacity cannot make a decision regarding their medical treatment.

Respect for autonomy is a central ethical principle in end-of-life care. However, due to cognitive decline, emotional distress, and the existential weight of end-of-life decisions, many patients may struggle to articulate or sustain their preferences without appropriate forms of support. The question, then, is not solely how to respect patients' autonomy in end-of-life care, but how autonomy, understood in relational terms, can be genuinely fostered. To address this question, the article advances a normative and practice-oriented model of decision-making that integrates two approaches often tr

BACKGROUND: Nursing autonomy is essential in intensive care units (ICUs). However, there is limited understanding of how nurses perceive autonomy within their practice.
AIM: To explore nurses' perception and experience of autonomy in ICUs.
DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study.
METHODS: The study was conducted with 14 ICU nurses through interviews from May to August 2025. Nurses' characteristics were described, and interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a primarily inductive, semantic codebook thematic analysis informed by Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework.

Homelessness is a complex and gendered experience. To understand this complexity, novel theoretical frameworks and appropriate research methods are required. Most women living without homes have experienced some form of abuse or mental health issues before becoming, being or exiting homelessness and there is high prevalence of trauma in this vulnerable population. Researchers investigating women's homelessness need to ensure the research process is not retraumatising. This paper proposes a theoretical framework that combines self-determination theory (SDT) and photo-elicitation to support and

UNLABELLED: Opportunities and barriers for occupational engagement among residents in supported housing.
BACKGROUND: Research shows that people with psychiatric disabilities view supported housing (SH) as a possibility for social contact, but also as entailing a risk of deprived self-determination. There is, however, little research on the target group's engagement in everyday occupations.
AIM: To explore SH residents' opportunities and barriers for occupational engagement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen participants were interviewed, and data was analysed using content analysis.

AIM: This qualitative study examined how autonomy and autonomy support are addressed in the theoretical part of Dutch nursing education.
BACKGROUND: Supporting clients' autonomy in activities of daily living is essential for dignity and quality of life, but remains complex and often suboptimal due to contextual factors such as care settings, nurse-client relationships, and systemic pressures. Nurses must balance professional skills with sensitivity to clients' values. Little is known about how nursing students are prepared to support autonomy.
METHOD: A document analysis of curricula and tea

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden called for further cross-cultural and quantitative research to understand the mechanisms under their egalitarianism framework. Studying the socio-ecological factors that favour egalitarian processes or inequality and slavery maps the same spectrum of individual autonomy from two ends. Including slavery in the analysis' scope is consistent with their paradigm and complements their approach.

Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) is increasingly used in creative design. Understanding fashion designers' willingness to adopt these tools has therefore become important for both research and practice. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, this study integrates Self-Determination Theory (SDT) with perceived risk, social influence, and facilitating conditions. It examines how these contextual stimuli shape designers' basic psychological need satisfaction and behavioral intention. We analyzed 318 valid responses with complete data for all 21 measurement items fr

The life story represents a useful tool that enables people living with dementia to better preserve their identity and sense of continuity, that is, the connection between who they were and who they still are. At the same time, they provide care providers with a deeper understanding of the needs and values of people with dementia and enable the provision of care that is truly individualized, sensitive, and respectful. In practice, information from life stories is used as a valuable source of knowledge for care planning. However, this approach raises several ethical questions. Who has the right

This comment accepts the distinction that Duncan Stibbard-Hawkes and Chris von Rueden make: the difference between process-egalitarianism and outcome-egalitarianism. It also accepts that most historical societies care more about process- than outcome-egalitarianism. However, a question remains. If people care about process-egalitarianism, how come they are ready to surrender autonomy - i.e., ability to make decisions of their own - to a political community?

The use of coercion in complex situations, such as intensive care therapy, requires special attention, as patients are in a situation of dependency and often limited self-determination. Coercion can also arise in intensive care situations, including situations where a person's natural will is overcome.Coercion as freedom-restricting, -limiting measures and forced treatment in ICUs exists in the form of formal and informal coercion and is perceived by the patient. Formal coercion includes measures such as restraints, sedation and environment. Informal coercion arises from influence, such as man

Advance directives applied to decision making in assisting people with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer disease faces professionals with an ethical dilemma that seems to have a pole on the autonomy enjoyed by the subject when gave such directions and in the other the compassion that awakens the individual at the time of their implementation. In this paper we take the concepts of R. Dworkin of experiential interests(i.e. things that people do just because they like the experience of doing them) and critical interests (interests, which if not satisfied, people would think they were wor
