Journal of intellectual disability research : JIDR2026eng
BACKGROUND: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience significant health and healthcare disparities. Home and community-based services (HCBS) are crucial for the health and well-being of adults with IDD, and national regulations mandate person-centred planning (PCP) for all HCBS service administration. Despite these requirements, limited evidence exists on how PCP impacts health outcomes. This study examines the association of PCP and health outcomes, unmet healthcare needs and preventative care access.
METHODS: This study uses 2021-2023 National Core Indicators

BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in secondary care settings. This can lead to challenges in accessing appropriate care for patients, and the allocation of resources in these services.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to estimate the rate of personality disorder in a cohort of individuals presenting to a typical urban secondary care mental health service in Australia. The secondary objective was to compare this to the recorded rate of personality disorder diagnosis in this setting.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed for 376 patient

BACKGROUND: The idea of involving citizens in shaping social and health services is not new. Many authors have stated the lack of citizens’ input in the development of these sectors. Different theoretical frameworks on the user perspective exist, but they are often broad and difficult to connect with the presented topic clearly. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to examine factors influencing the involvement of service users in health and social services in Poland, particularly from the perspective of individuals with disabilities and with chronic mental health conditions. METHODS: The findings prese

BACKGROUND: The concept of digital twins has great potential for transforming the existing health care system by making it more personalized. As a convergence of health care, artificial intelligence, and information and communication technologies, personalized health care services that are developed under the concept of digital twins raise a myriad of ethical issues. Although some of the ethical issues are known to researchers working on digital health and personalized medicine, currently, there is no comprehensive review that maps the major ethical risks of digital twins for personalized heal

This study mapped the availability, integration, and referral patterns of mental health (MH) and substance use disorder (SUD) services for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Georgia. PLWH face a heightened burden of MH conditions, compounded by systemic and social barriers. In Georgia, these challenges are exacerbated by fragmented healthcare system, centralized HIV care, and limited service integration. Cross-sectional survey was conducted between January-August 2024 using a structured questionnaire distributed to 80 institutions across 11 regions of Georgia, including MH centers, HIV-focused N

PURPOSE: Patients with a diagnosis of personality disorder (PD) have multiple and diverse needs. It has been noted that individuals with personality disorder are high users of health care resources, especially psychiatric services, ambulance services and emergency departments. In addition PD has been shown to be a significant predictor of disability and mental health consultations independent of Axis I disorders and physical conditions. This study aimed to compare the patterns of service usage, clinical ratings of symptoms and functioning, as well as demographic and clinically relevant histori

OBJECTIVES: A few large-scale studies have shown that among persons with HIV (PWH), mental health and substance use comorbidities can increase the likelihood of hospital-based treatment. However, there has no evidence about the reasons for the increases in hospital-based health care utilization and the associated costs. We hypothesized that MHS+ (with) will have increased rates of hospital-based treatment utilization compared with MHS- (without), which will result in higher costs.
METHODS: A validated claims-based case definition was used to identify PWH with MHS+ and MHS- as of March 31, 202

BACKGROUND: The majority of mental health services include patients with personality disorder (PD) and comorbid conditions. Alexithymia, a psychological construct referring to difficulties in identifying and describing internal mental states, may represent a challenge to the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with PD. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of alexithymia among patients in specialized PD mental health services, differences according to PD severity and PD type, and the longitudinal course of alexithymia during treatment.
METHODS: The study included 1,019 patients t

The ways homelessness and diabetes affect each other is not well known. The authors sought to understand barriers and enablers to health for homeless people with diabetes as perceived by homeless persons and providers. The authors performed semistructured interviews with a sample of participants (seven homeless persons, six social service providers, and five medical providers) in an urban Midwest community. Data analysis was performed with the qualitative editing method. Participants described external factors (chaotic lifestyle, diet/food availability, access to care, and medications) and int

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of housing status on health service utilization patterns in low-income HIV-infected adults.
DESIGN: A survey of 1,445 HIV-infected Medicaid recipients in New York State between April 1996 and March 1997.
MAIN RESULTS: Six percent of study participants were homeless, 24.5% were "doubled-up," and 69.5% were stably housed. Compared with the stably housed, doubled-up and homeless participants were less likely to be seeing a physician regularly (P = .0001), and if seeing a physician, they were likely to have been doing so for a significantly shorter time (P = .02)
