Neural correlates of personal space regulation in psychosis: role of the inferior parietal cortex.

Regulation of interpersonal distance or "personal space" (PS; the space near the body into which others cannot intrude without eliciting discomfort) is a largely unconscious channel of non-verbal social communication used by many species including humans. PS abnormalities have been observed in neuropsychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia. However, the neurophysiological basis of these abnormalities remains unknown. To investigate this question, in this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected while individuals with psychotic disorders (PD; n = 37) and demo

Different neural activations for an approaching friend versus stranger: Linking personal space to numerical cognition.

INTRODUCTION: Typically, humans place themselves at a preferred distance from others. This distance is known to characterize human spatial behavior. Here, we focused on neurocognitive conditions that may affect interpersonal distances. The current study investigated whether neurocognitive deficiencies in numerical and spatial knowledge may affect social perception and modulate personal space. METHOD: In an event-related potential (ERP) study, university students with developmental dyscalculia (DD) and typically developing control participants were given a computerized version of the comfortab

From embodying tool to embodying alien limb: sensory-motor modulation of personal and extrapersonal space.

Years ago, it was demonstrated (e.g., Rizzolatti et al. in Handbook of neuropsychology, Elsevier Science, Amsterdam, 2000) that the brain does not encode the space around us in a homogeneous way, but through neural circuits that map the space relative to the distance that objects of interest have from the body. In monkeys, relatively discrete neural systems, characterized by neurons with specific neurophysiological responses, seem to be dedicated either to represent the space that can be reached by the hand (near/peripersonal space) or to the distant space (far/extrapersonal space). It was als

The relationship between cognitive function and life space: the potential role of personal control beliefs.

We examined the relationship of cognitive and functional measures with life space (a measure of spatial mobility examining extent of movement within a person's environment) in older adults, and investigated the potential moderating role of personal control beliefs. Internal control beliefs reflect feelings of competence and personal agency, while attributions of external control imply a more dependent or passive point of view. Participants were 2,737 adults from the ACTIVE study, with a mean age of 74 years. Females comprised 76% of the sample, with good minority representation (27% African Am

Visual filtering in time and space among persons with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) appear to perform at a level that is commensurate with developmental expectations on simple tasks of selective attention. In this study, we examine how their selective attention is impacted by target changes that unfold over both time and space. This increased complexity reflects an attempt at greater ecological validity in an experimental task, as a steppingstone for better understanding attention among persons with DS in real-world environments. METHODS: A modified flanker task was used to assess visual temporal and spatial filtering among per

Suitable design of mouthguard for sports-active person with spaced dentition.

AIM: Custom-made mouthguard (MG) is popularly used by sports-active persons or athletes having either normo-occlussion or malocclusion to prevent dental injury. For sports-active person with malocclusion, specially designed mouthguard is often required. The purpose of this study was to make a suitable design custom-made mouthguard for sports-active person with spaced dentition by the shock absorption capability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two different types of double layered mouthguards were made from a model of a sports-active person having spaced dentition with polyolefin sheets. One type was

Peri-Personal Space Tracing by Hand-Blink Reflex Modulation in Patients with Chronic Disorders of Consciousness.

The assessment of awareness in patients with chronic Disorders of Consciousness (DoC), including Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome (UWS) and Minimally Conscious State (MCS), is challenging. The level of awareness impairment may depend on the degree of deterioration of the large-scale cortical-thalamo-cortical networks induced by brain injury. Electrophysiological approaches may shed light on awareness presence in patients with DoC by estimating cortical functions related to the cortical-thalamo-cortical networks including, for example, the cortico-subcortical processes generating motor respons

The narrow space of legitimacy: A personal perspective on positioning, perception and gender in surgical careers.

Despite decades of progress in formal equality, women in surgery continue to experience differential perceptions in terms of authority, leadership and legitimacy that are not captured by structural indicators alone. Drawing on the first-hand experience of a female plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing as the only woman among senior surgeons in her department, this personal perspective examined how internalized norms, self-positioning and social expectations shape the lived experience of professional legitimacy in surgery. It explored how gender can function simultaneously as a clinical

The anticipatory effect of goal-directed action planning with a lower limb on peri-personal space.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the representation of peri-personal space (PPS) can be strongly modulated by the intention to execute a spatially-directed hand-movement. However, the question of whether analogous motor-induced PPS modulations can be observed during the planning and execution of goal-directed lower limbs movements has been scarcely investigated. Here we asked whether changes in the visuo-tactile PPS maps occur during the planning of a goal directed foot-movement. We asked participants to respond to the location of a tactile stimulus delivered to the index finger (top) or

Feeding the cosmos: tackling personalized space nutrition and the leaky gut challenge.

Long-duration space missions pose serious challenges to astronaut nutrition and health due to the altered environment of Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This study examines the nutritional composition of crops grown in space, identifying deficiencies in key nutrients such as calcium and magnesium, along with variable antioxidant profiles. These imbalances may impact astronaut physiology, particularly bone health and immune function, and are potentially linked to altered gene expression pathways in microgravity. Emerging evidence also suggests increased intestinal permeability, referred as leaky gut syn

Borderline We-Space? The Phenomenology of the Background of Safety in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition characterized by instability in identity, relationships, and affect. Individuals, with BPD typically lack a coherent sense of self, are highly sensitive to interpersonal stressors, experience intense fluctuations in mood, and frequently engage in impulsive and self-destructive behaviors. Although both empirical research and development of effective psychotherapy have evidently progressed over the past years, many aspects regarding the structure of experience and the life-world typical for persons with BPD are not yet fully

Effects of personal space intrusion in affective contexts: an fMRI investigation with women suffering from borderline personality disorder.

The amygdala and the parietal cortex play a key role in the neural representation of personal space. Although the concept of personal space is clinically very relevant for borderline personality disorder (BPD), especially in affective contexts, it has not been investigated thus far with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In this fMRI study, 25 female BPD patients and 25 healthy women were exposed to photos of angry, disgusted and neutral facial expressions. All stimuli were once shown as still photos, and once were zoomed-in in order to simulate intrusion into one's own personal spa

Assessing personal noise exposure and its relationship with mental health in Beijing based on individuals' space-time behavior.

BACKGROUND: Most prior studies adopted a static residence-based approach in the assessment of noise exposure, which may lead to biased exposure estimates and misleading findings in noise-health relationships. Relatively little is known about personal noise exposure based on individuals' space-time behavior and its effect on mental health. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to analyze and geo-visualize personal exposure to noise in various microenvironments based on individuals' space-time trajectories at a very fine resolution and to further investigate the relationships between mental health and pe

Comparison of gait between young adults fitted with the space foot and nondisabled persons.

Prosthetic feet having new keel configurations were specially designed to store deformation energy during early and midstance and release it at push-off. These prosthetic components display longitudinal symmetry favoring good energy storage/release capability in the sagittal plane. The need for inverters/everters either as independent components or within the foot structure has long been recognized. This article documents the walking and slow jogging performances of six young adults wearing below-knee prostheses fitted with the Space Foot, a flexible foot prosthesis that provides medio-lateral

Assessing pedestrian responses to autonomous and personal mobility robots in crowded public spaces.

Robots increasingly share spaces with people, supporting delivery services and mobility for the aging populations, yet their ability to share space comfortably lacks understanding and benchmarks for designers and policy-makers. We compared human-robot (HRI) and human-human (HHI) interactions across four real-world crowd datasets spanning Europe, North America, and Asia, using a unified pipeline to detect interactions, stratify by crowd density, and model pedestrian behavior. Local motion patterns (speed, acceleration, and jerk) remained closely matched between HRI and HHI across all densities.
