OBJECTIVES: Housekeeping, dietary, laundry, and maintenance workers play a critical role in nursing home quality and safety. High turnover among these workers disrupts care, increases costs, and undermines facility stability. However, little is known about the role of staffing and wages on turnover for these roles. The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of staffing and wages on the turnover of housekeeping, dietary, laundry, and maintenance workers.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 418 unique nursing homes with 4428 observations in Iowa from 20

What makes a company strategically agile--able to alter its strategies and business models rapidly in response to major changes in its market space, and to do so repeatedly without major trauma? Three years of in-depth case research on a dozen large companies worldwide showed the authors that one key factor is a new leadership model at the top. Senior executives at agile companies assume collective rather than individual responsibility for results. They build interdependencies among units and divisions, motivating themselves to engage with one another, and carefully manage their dealings to pr

Retention problems will plague us for the near future. Blanchard and Waghorn (1997) believe that everyone wants to be magnificent, and not just ordinary. Unfortunately, often we expect only the ordinary and not the magnificent. People respond to our expectations. We can help staff to achieve magnificence by providing unconditional love and remembering that people are magnificent. Sometimes their behavior is a problem and certain things block the expression of their greatness, but all people are magnificent. If we create "sanctuaries of caring" where nurses and others are given the opportunity

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to enhance and maintain organisational commitment, work engagement and retention and to reduce burnout and turnover of newly graduated nurses (NGNs).
BACKGROUND: Nurses leave their profession at a rate of 5%-18% worldwide. NGNs transferring from being a nurse student to a registered nurse may face significant stress and difficulties. To support a successful transition and reduce turnover rates among new graduates, it is necessary to identify effective interventions to enhance and maintain organisational commitment, work engagement and retent

BACKGROUND: Climate change can negatively affect mental health, and poor mental health can negatively affect work. However, less is known about the relationship between mental health and workplace behaviours within the climate change context.
AIMS: To explore existing literature relating to climate-induced mental ill-health as a potential predictor of workplace behaviours.
METHODS: Scoping review, searching five databases for relevant literature using two separate search strategies.
RESULTS: Only five studies with any relevant data were found. Results could not be easily synthesized because

In this study, we develop and test a model that extends leader-member exchange (LMX) theory to a dual leadership context. Drawing upon relative deprivation theory, we assert that when employees work for 2 leaders, each relationship exists within the context of the other relationship. Thus, the level of alignment or misalignment between the 2 relationships has implications for employees' job satisfaction and voluntary turnover. Employing polynomial regression on time-lagged data gathered from 159 information technology consultants nested in 26 client projects, we found that employee outcomes ar

AIM: To clarify and report an analysis of the concept of motivation in nursing.
BACKGROUND: Motivation shapes nurses' career decisions, job satisfaction and long-term retention. Persistent workforce challenges, particularly high turnover among newly licensed registered nurses, demand a clear, context-specific understanding of nursing motivation. This concept analysis aimed to clarify motivation within nursing practice, identify its defining attributes, antecedents and consequences, and propose a nursing-specific definition to guide workforce development, recruitment and retention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Nurse turnover is a major problem all over the world. It is known that young nurses who constitute the new nurse labour force are more likely to leave their organization, especially in their first year. However, qualitative studies that approach the problem from the perspective of young nurses and focus on the reasons for their decision to leave their organization are limited.
AIM: To understand the reasons for young nurses' leaving their organization and determine their experiences, focusing on their point of view.
METHODS: The study had a descriptive qualitative design and was

Almost 50% of the largest American firms will have a new CEO within the next four years; your company could very well be next. Senior executives know that a CEO transition means they're in for a round of firings, organizational reshuffles, and other unwelcome career changes. When your career suddenly depends on the views of a person you may not know, how worried should you be? According to the authors--very. They investigated the 2002-2004 CEO turnover rates of the top 1,000 U.S. companies and interviewed more than a dozen CEOs, each of whom had taken over at least one very large organization.

Digital health is increasingly promoted to address rural health and care workforce shortages. However, its workforce consequences are usually evaluated through implementation or service-delivery outcomes rather than the conditions that enable rural workers to remain, develop, and practice sustainably. We conducted a Joanna Briggs Institute-informed scoping review reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. The protocol was prospectively registered on the Open Science Framework. Five databases were searched for studies

The declining interest among newly licensed nurses in medical-surgical nursing, compared to other specialties, poses a challenge to healthcare systems as they navigate staffing shortages and experienced nurse turnover in this important area. While the factors influencing specialty preferences remain unclear, nursing professional development practitioners play a vital role in bridging the gap between newly licensed nurses' interests and the essential needs of health care, fostering a stronger alignment and support for this foundational specialty.

Toxic leadership or showcasing leadership skills, which are destructive to team spirit and individuals in the workplace, have been noted to significantly influence employee turnover. The purpose of the SLR (systematic literature review) is to investigate the impact of perceived toxic leadership on employee turnover, with the primary focus on the retail industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Fifty journal articles were identified from a systematic analysis of the Science Direct database from 2018 to 2023 and have been included here to investigate toxic leadership, its influence on job sati

BACKGROUND: Globally, the nursing workforce shortage in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is evolving into a critical public health challenge. NICU nurses face a dual burden of high technical demands and intensive emotional labor, making them a high-risk group for professional burnout. The occupational wellbeing of nurses not only impacts individual health but also directly correlates with the clinical safety outcomes of preterm and ill neonates through the "health impairment process."
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to introduce the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model as a systemic management

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study using an appreciative inquiry (API) methodology was to evaluate how human-centered leadership in health care (HCL-HC) is integrated into the experiences of nurse leaders regarding well-being, professional growth, and retention.
BACKGROUND: Health care organizations face increasing turnover, workforce shortages, and rising patient complexity. Contemporary leadership models such as HCL‑HC may offer strategies to strengthen leader well-being, retention, and organizational outcomes.
METHODS: A mixed‑methods study was conducted at a large academic

In light of recent research suggesting mothers are more likely to withdraw from work than fathers are, we assess the relative contributions of popular "pushed-out" and "opting-out" perspectives over the course of their pregnancies. As pregnancy is a pivotal time for the reevaluation of work and life roles, we investigate the degree to which gender differences in changes in turnover intentions and intentions to return to the workforce are explained by changes in perceived career encouragement from organizational members (a pushed-out factor), as well as changes in the employees' own career moti

BACKGROUND: Labour shortages and high staff turnover pose major challenges for healthcare systems, yet most existing research relies on cross-sectional data, focuses on single occupations, and examines intention to leave rather than actual mobility. To address these gaps, this two-part study investigates healthcare staff mobility patterns across public and private employers and occupational groups in Sweden over the past decade (labour market mobility perspective), while also examining types of organisational turnover and the exit destinations of staff who voluntarily left their positions (an

The literature is relatively silent on how managers should deal with a reduction in force (RIF). One difficulty is dealing with the "surviving" staff and maintaining credibility. It is important to assess the organizational climate and plan and carry out a forum for the remaining staff. It is especially important to consider the psychologic effects of staff reduction, which include a sense of loss of control, hostility, and a tendency to want to find fault or blame. Lack of attention to these matters can lead to a RIF that compromises the work effectiveness of the organization by reducing the

PURPOSE: Rural Veterans face persistent barriers to care, often exacerbated by health care workforce shortages. Although recruitment initiatives are important, retaining providers in rural areas is equally critical to sustaining access and continuity of care. This rapid scoping review examined how "rural workforce retention" is defined and measured in the peer-reviewed literature and synthesized recommended reporting elements to improve clarity and comparability.
METHODS: Six bibliographic databases were searched (2014-2025) for English-language studies of rural health care in the United Stat
