Skin cancer diagnosis over the lifetime in persons with different disabilities.

Persons with disabilities globally experience barriers to medical care, preventative screening, and experience disparate health outcomes compared to those without disabilities. The prevalence of skin cancer in persons with different disabilities is not known. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2017 to 2021 was analyzed to study skin cancer across the lifetime in patients with disabilities related to hearing, vision, ambulation, cognition, independent living, and self-care. Of the 10% of BRFSS respondents with a history of skin cancer, the unadjusted prevalence in

CDC grand rounds: public health practices to include persons with disabilities.

"Persons with disabilities" is a vague designation that might not always be understood. Persons with disabilities are persons with limitations in hearing, vision, mobility, or cognition, or with emotional or behavioral disorders. What they have in common is that they all experience a significant limitation in function that can make it harder to engage in some activity of daily living without accommodations or supports.

Behavioral interventions to reduce the pica of persons with developmental disabilities.

The consumption of nonfood items (i.e., pica) frequently occurs in persons with developmental disabilities. Pica may result in the puncture or blockage of the digestive tract, infestation by gastrointestinal parasites, and can interfere with an individual's daily learning, occupational performance, and quality of life. Twenty-six published studies have examined the efficacy of behavioral-intervention packages (e.g., differential reinforcement of other behavior, noncontingent attention, or overcorrection) on the pica of persons with developmental disabilities. This article reviews those studies

Developing an AIDS prevention education program for persons with developmental disabilities.

The AIDS epidemic poses a serious threat to people with developmental disabilities, the magnitude of which has not yet been fully realized by many professionals working with this population. Models for effective AIDS prevention education have been developed, however, within other populations. Key principles utilized in existing models were discussed and recommendations presented on how to adapt these models when designing programs for people who have developmental disabilities, most specifically, those in the mild/moderate range of mental retardation.

A Socioeconomic Vulnerability Index for Persons with Disabilities via Machine Learning Approach.

Employment is a key social determinant of health, yet people with disabilities (PWDs) face persistent disparities in vocational rehabilitation (VR) services and outcomes. Federally funded Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) programs serve individuals whose disabilities create barriers to competitive integrated employment, yet service allocation and outcomes vary widely across socioeconomic contexts. Understanding how cumulative socioeconomic disadvantage shapes VR service delivery and employment outcomes is essential for advancing equity. Using Rehabilitation Service Administration (RSA-9/11) data

Providing culturally sensitive sexual medicine for persons with disabilities: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with physical disabilities (PWD) are a health care disparity group who face both difficulties accessing and inequalities in care. Although their sexual health is impacted by their disability and important to them, they often receive no or inadequate sexual health care. To address this gap, we sought to summarize evidence-based recommendations for culturally sensitive sexual health care for PWD. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to identify patient-reported preferences for culturally sensitive sexual health care for people with Parkinson's Disease, Multiple S

"The experiences and needs of persons with disabilities in using paratransit services".

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities do not yet experience equality with the rest of the population when using transportation. Paratransit services take over transportation for persons with disabilities when public transportation cannot be used or can only be used to a limited extent. The usefulness of these services remains limited due to financial and structural reasons. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the experiences of persons with disabilities with paratransit in Switzerland, explores their needs and verifies facilitators and barriers to the use of paratransit services. Furthermo

Subjective health among LGBT persons living with disabilities: A qualitative content analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There exist significant health disparities among both lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual (LGBT) and disability persons; however, there is a dearth of information regarding the subjective health experiences of LGBT persons living with disabilities (LGBTPWD). As such, the purpose of this study was to understand how LGBTPWD subjectively defined and characterized the meaning of health in their lives. METHOD: Using qualitative content analyses procedures outlined by Elo and Kyngäs (2008), we conducted a secondary data analysis using a larger questionnaire study that was administered via

Pharmacotherapy for aggressive behaviours in persons with intellectual disabilities: treatment or mistreatment?

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic medications have been used extensively to treat aggressive behaviours in persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) when the main psychiatric diagnoses given to them in the past were schizophrenia, childhood psychoses and ID with behaviour problems. Today, antipsychotics are still estimated to comprise 30-50% of all the psychotropics prescribed for persons with ID, although the prevalence of psychotic disorders is only 3% in this population. The overuse of antipsychotics in persons with ID could be justified if their aggressive behaviours were associated with mostly

Group and organizational involvement among persons with psychiatric disabilities in supported housing.

This study examined the patterns and correlates of group and organizational involvement among persons with psychiatric disabilities using a cross-sectional, probability sample of 252 residents in supported independent housing (SIH). Groups and organizations were classified according to whether or not they have a behavioral health focus. Demographic, clinical, and service use characteristics were examined as potential predictors of membership using Poisson regression models. Findings indicated that 60% of the sample was involved in some kind of behavioral or nonbehavioral health organization. S
