Deaf scholars have long worked at the margins of academic institutions not designed for them. Designated deaf academic spaces-where deaf ways of knowing, teaching, and communicating are centered-remain rare. This study explores what becomes possible when such a space exists, presenting Dr Deaf as a case study. Drawing on interviews with participants and teachers, we show how deaf epistemologies and pedagogies are enacted through cross-stage responsibility and academic becoming through re-alignment of deaf participants and teachers. We also identify a distinct deaf rhythm that emerges in this s

Coeditors of a special issue of the American Annals of the Deaf on mathematics instruction in deaf education, the authors provide a context for the five featured articles. First, the authors establish the importance of mathematics. They then give a historical account of previously related "stepping-stones." Beginning at 1990, the authors follow key events in the field that have led to the special issue. They summarize each article, highlighting three common themes: deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) persons as distinct and capable mathematics learners, the significance of conceptual understanding

BACKGROUND: There are 1.3 billion people with disabilities globally, and they frequently face barriers to accessing healthcare, contributing to their worse health and higher mortality. However, little research has explored patient-reported approaches to improve healthcare for persons with disabilities. Consequently, this study aimed to explore possible solutions and recommendations to address the existing barriers to access to healthcare for persons with disabilities in rural Uganda.
METHODS: We conducted 27 semi-structured interviews with individuals with various disabilities in rural Luuka

Research rarely focuses on how deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students address mathematical ideas. Complexities involved in using sign language (SL) in mathematics classrooms include not just challenges, but opportunities that accompany mathematics learning in this gestural-somatic medium. The authors consider DHH students primarily as learners of mathematics, and their SL use as a special case of language in the mathematics classroom. More specifically, using SL in teaching and learning mathematics is explored within semiotic and embodiment perspectives to gain a better understanding of how u

Deaf education research has long been preoccupied with the literacy levels of deaf students, particularly related to the idea that the average deaf high schooler graduates reading on the fourth-grade level. This statistic has been a rationale for countless interventions aimed at improving a so-called performance gap between deaf and hearing students. However, this statistic has also caused harm to deaf individuals, as research continues to frame the reading achievement of this population as a deficit in need of remediation. In this article, we performed a qualitative analysis of 14 articles pu

Research has been conducted worldwide to address various topics related to postsecondary education programs for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students. However, there is a paucity of reviews covering relevant research that could guide future efforts. Therefore, this literature scoping review was conducted to highlight exciting empirical studies in postsecondary education programs for DHH students. The review included 102 studies. The results of this review show the main characteristics of these studies, the years of publication, countries, research methods, and participants. This review also

Deaf aesthetics is a theoretical framework we actualized to enhance interactions in deaf education, particularly via multimodal pedagogy and curricular experiences. Prior research illustrates that deaf aesthetics are desired by deaf teachers and students who are deaf; however, most instructional-delivery formats lack these supports. The present mixed-methodology, multi-method case study is an empirical evaluation of how deaf aesthetics contributed to the process of redesigning a course, including major revisions to instructional slide decks (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi). A systematic review explored the evidence base of literacy intervention studies that examined the early years of schooling (preschool through first grade) of participants who were d/Deaf or hard of hearing (d/Dhh). Specific inclusion criteria were used to select single-case design (SCD) studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2004 and 2017. Fourteen studies met the criteria. Studies were evaluated according to the quality indicators for evidence-based research, individually and across studies (Horner et al., 2005; Institute for Educational Sciences, 2017; Kratochwill et al., 2013).

Presbycusis is a sensorineural hearing loss caused by hearing system aging and degeneration. The clinical manifestations are progressive bilateral symmetrical hearing loss, and the hearing curve is mostly slope-shaped with high-frequency reduction, sometimes flat. The results of the second national sample survey of disabled persons (2006) showed that the total number of hearing and speech disability in China was 27.8 million, accounting for 34% of the total number of disabled people in China. Among them are people over 60 years old. There are 20.4541 million people with hearing disabilities. T

The strategic incremental rehearsal intervention is a modified form of incremental rehearsal, known for its effectiveness as a flashcard technique in improving sight word acquisition among children with reading difficulties. Despite its efficacy, evaluations of this procedure with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and who have received special education services remain sparse. This study aimed to assess the impact of incremental rehearsal intervention on the acquisition of nine sight words among second-grade students who are hard of hearing. A single-case experimental design with a mult

The language wars have driven decision-making and educational options for D/deaf and hard of hearing children for over a century, yet we still have not made sufficient progress in closing the linguistic and educational gaps between D/deaf and hard of hearing children and their hearing peers. Perhaps it is time to abandon the bifurcated approach that has driven our field since the infamous Milan Conference of 1880. This commentary explores how a "Radical Middle" approach can frame the way we prepare teachers of the deaf, how we conduct and disseminate research, how we support families, and how

To promote dialogue among literacy researchers from East and West along the "'Silk Road' to literacy" for Chinese d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students (Andrews et al., 2021), this epilogue to an American Annals of the Deaf special issue on language development and literacy learning of d/Dhh students in Chinese communities poses questions and provides reflections from the perspective of the Chinese Deaf lens on the ideas in the six articles that make up the special issue. This perspective reframes literacy instruction toward an asset-based model that emphasizes visual sensory strengths,

This review article examined the validity of the qualitative similarity hypothesis (QSH) in the context of Turkish d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students' reading development. The review discussed the reading processes of both Turkish typically developing (i.e., hearing) students and d/Dhh students in a comparative manner. Since there are no empirical studies directly testing the QSH in the Turkish context and no studies examining the related construct of developmental similarity, indirect discussions were conducted based on the findings of selected studies. The extent to which the QSH al

The COVID-19 pandemic placed stress on all aspects of the educational system. Many state departments of education acknowledged the disruption to individualized education program evaluation and implementation but insisted that evaluation timelines and services continue undisrupted. School psychologists were therefore forced to navigate the viability of virtual assessment without established research supporting this type of student evaluation. Formal assessments used in the identification of learning disabilities and other areas of disability were not standardized with virtual administration pro
