Assisting Visually Impaired People in the Public Transport System through RF-Communication and Embedded Systems †.

For a significant number of people with visual impairments, public transport plays an important role in productivity, community participation, and independence, since it may be the only feasible mobility option to participate in their education, work, medical care, food, and to attend many other places in their community. To use the public bus system safely, effectively, and autonomously, these people need to collect information about their physical environment and visible information at stops and terminals, such as timetables, routes, etc. Unfortunately, most people who are blind or visually

ARAware: Assisting Visually Impaired People with Real-Time Critical Moving Object Identification.

Autonomous outdoor moving objects like cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians present different risks to the safety of Visually Impaired People (VIPs). Consequently, many camera-based VIP mobility assistive solutions have resulted. However, they fail to guarantee VIP safety in practice, i.e., they cannot effectively prevent collisions with more dangerous threats moving at higher speeds, namely, Critical Moving Objects (CMOs). This paper presents the first practical camera-based VIP mobility assistant scheme, ARAware, that effectively identifies CMOs in real-time to give the VIP more time

Real-Time Indoor Scene Description for the Visually Impaired Using Autoencoder Fusion Strategies with Visible Cameras.

This paper describes three coarse image description strategies, which are meant to promote a rough perception of surrounding objects for visually impaired individuals, with application to indoor spaces. The described algorithms operate on images (grabbed by the user, by means of a chest-mounted camera), and provide in output a list of objects that likely exist in his context across the indoor scene. In this regard, first, different colour, texture, and shape-based feature extractors are generated, followed by a feature learning step by means of AutoEncoder (AE) models. Second, the produced fea

Prevalence of disabling conditions in a rural northern Thai community: a survey conducted by village health communicators.

This report presents a survey of disabling conditions conducted by village health communicators (VHCs) in 1989 in a rural northern Thai community. The disabled were first identified by a VHC and then examined clinically and socially by a health care team both to confirm the clinical diagnosis and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. The overall prevalence rate of disabled persons was 6.3/1,000 population. The prevalence rate was higher for males than females and increased with age. Locomotor disability (48.8%) was the most commonly identified disabling condition, with visual disability

A survey of graph-based assistive technologies for visually impaired students in Thailand.

Graphs and other visual representations are essential tools in mathematics and science education. However, visually impaired (VI) students in Thailand often face significant barriers to accessing these materials. This study, conducted in four schools for the blind in Thailand, examined the availability and usability of graph tools. Using a combination of surveys and in-depth interviews with 60 participants (40 VI students and 20 teachers), we identified various challenges related to perceptibility (unclear axes and grid lines, need to reset/replot), affordability (limited budgets, dependence o

Matuto, Magbasa, Maglaro: Learning to read braille through play.

In September 2016, Digital Learning for Development and All Children Reading released a "Grand Challenge for Development" urging researchers to explore the barriers that children with sensory disabilities in the Philippines face with respect to learning how to read. We sought to address one component of this challenge; engagement of persons with visual impairment in learning how to read in braille. The primary goal of this study was to engage in the co-design process to create a device to help young children with visual impairments learn to identify letters and short words in braille as a firs

Creating low vision and nonvisual instructions for diabetes technology: an empirically validated process.

INTRODUCTION: Nearly 20% of the adults with diagnosed diabetes in the United States also have visual impairment. Many individuals in this group perform routine diabetes self-management tasks independently, often using technology that was not specifically designed for use by people with visual impairment (e.g., insulin pumps and pens). Equitable care for persons with disabilities requires providing instructions in formats accessible for nonreaders. However, instructions in accessible formats, such as recordings, braille, or digital documents that are legible to screen readers, are seldom availa

Understanding the Relationship Between Teacher Behavior and Motivation in Students with Acquired Deafblindness.

Because little is known about teacher-student relationships that involve students with acquired deafblindness, the authors performed a multiple case study with a multiple-method design to investigate the relationship between need-supportive teaching behaviors and student engagement. Using self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), they analyzed video observations of interactions. It was found that teachers' provision of structure, autonomy support, and involvement often cooccurs with higher levels of student engagement. Moreover, varying degrees of need support over time seem to result in

PC-CS-YOLO: High-Precision Obstacle Detection for Visually Impaired Safety.

The issue of obstacle avoidance and safety for visually impaired individuals has been a major topic of research. However, complex street environments still pose significant challenges for blind obstacle detection systems. Existing solutions often fail to provide real-time, accurate obstacle avoidance decisions. In this study, we propose a blind obstacle detection system based on the PC-CS-YOLO model. The system improves the backbone network by adopting the partial convolutional feed-forward network (PCFN) to reduce computational redundancy. Additionally, to enhance the network's robustness in

A hybrid object detection approach for visually impaired persons using pigeon-inspired optimization and deep learning models.

Visually challenged persons include a significant part of the population, and they exist all over the globe. Recently, technology has demonstrated its occurrence in each field, and state-of-the-art devices aid humans in their everyday lives. However, visually impaired people cannot view things around their atmospheres; they can only imagine the roaming surroundings. Furthermore, web-based applications are advanced to certify their protection. Using the application, the consumer can spin the requested task to share her/his position with the family members while threatening confidentiality. Thro

The use of magnets for the nonvisual construction of syntax-based tangible object assemblies by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Many students have difficulty in mastering syntax when programming. To alleviate this problem, the Scratch programming language was developed to have a visual block-based drag and drop code editor, where the shapes of the blocks and animation are used to make the syntax intuitive. To similarly make syntax intuitive to individuals who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) using tangible code blocks, a method needs to take into account perceptual processing differences between the senses and implementation differences between the physical and virtual world. The studies in this paper examined the

Tutoring math platform accessible for visually impaired people.

BACKGROUND: There are many problems with teaching and assessing impaired students in higher education, especially in technical science, where the knowledge is represented mostly by structural information like: math formulae, charts, graphs, etc. Developing e-learning platform for distance education solves this problem only partially due to the lack of accessibility for the blind. METHOD: The proposed method is based on the decomposition of the typical mathematical exercise into a sequence of elementary sub-exercises. This allows for interactive resolving of math exercises and assessment of th
