Pessimism and hostility scores as predictors of patient satisfaction ratings by medical out-patients.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research is to determine whether a pessimistic or hostile personality style adversely affects satisfaction with out-patient medical visits. Many patient and health care provider demographic characteristics have been related to patient satisfaction with a health care encounter, but little has been written about the association between patients' personality characteristics and their satisfaction ratings. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: An eight-item patient satisfaction survey was completed by 11,636 randomly selected medical out-patients two to three months after thei

Dispositional optimism, pessimism, and psychological distress among Venezuelan migrants in Chile: The role of acculturative stress.

INTRODUCTION: Migrants often experience mental health challenges associated with acculturative stress. Dispositional traits, such as optimism and pessimism, may shape how individuals appraise and cope with these challenges, influencing their psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the role of three dimensions of acculturative stress: integration difficulties, nostalgia, and structural barriers, in the relationship between optimism, pessimism and mental health symptoms among Venezuelan migrants living in Chile. METHOD: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 22

The effect of pessimism on mental health and tendency to physical violence: The mediating role of psychological strain.

This study examines the relationships between psychological strain, mental health, pessimism, and physical violence tendencies in athletes. The sample for the study consists of a total of 600 athletes, including 362 women and 238 men who participate in team sports in the university league. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses. The findings indicate a negative and significant relationship between pessimism and athletes' mental health, while no direct significant relationship was observed with physical violence tendencies. Furthermore, it has been determined that psychol

When the risk feels personal: self-relative pessimism in AI-related risk perception among people with disabilities.

PURPOSE: We examined AI-related risk perceptions among people with disabilities by distinguishing personal risk from societal risk. We further asked whether people with disabilities perceived themselves as more exposed to AI-related risks than society, a pattern this study terms self-relative pessimism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2023 Digital Divide Survey in South Korea. The analytic sample included 2,200 respondents who self-identified as having disabilities. Linear regression models were used to examine personal risk perception, societal risk perception, and optimis

Serial Mediation: How Optimism Reduces and Pessimism Intensifies Chronic Low Back Pain Through Depression and Biological Aging.

There is growing evidence that psychological (e.g., optimism, pessimism, depressive symptoms) and biological factors play an essential role in the experience of chronic low back pain (CLBP). This study aimed to examine the nature of the relationship between optimism or pessimism, depressive symptoms, the pace of biological aging, CLBP severity, and interference. Using mediation analysis, we tested the hypothesis that depressive symptoms and pace of biological aging measured using the Dunedin Pace of Aging from the Epigenome (DunedinPACE) serially mediate the relationship between optimism or pe

Effect of dispositional optimism and pessimism on the relationship between stressful life events and late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: Dispositional optimism is associated with a lower risk of depression. Optimism may protect against depression by conferring resilience to stressful life events. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dispositional optimism, and the related trait of dispositional pessimism, on the relationship between stressors and depression in older adults. METHODS: This prospective cohort study used data from the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons. Participants were aged ≥70 years and without known cardiovascular disease, dementia, independence-limiting physical disability and de

Childhood and adult socioeconomic position, cumulative lead levels, and pessimism in later life: the VA Normative Aging Study.

Pessimism, a general tendency toward negative expectancies, is a risk factor for depression and also heart disease, stroke, and reduced cancer survival. There is evidence that individuals with higher lead exposure have poorer health. However, low socioeconomic status (SES) is linked with higher lead levels and greater pessimism, and it is unclear whether lead influences psychological functioning independently of other social factors. The authors considered interrelations among childhood and adult SES, lead levels, and psychological functioning in data collected on 412 Boston area men between 1

Do emotional and social primers change the pessimism in collective future thinking? Testing the robustness of the collective negativity bias.

People are not optimistic about the future of the USA. When reporting their thoughts about the future, people express more worries than excitement, a phenomenon known as the collective negativity bias, and widely replicated among people residing in the USA. However, we do not know whether this bias is malleable. In this study, we tested whether prior exposure to valenced examples of collective future projections - attributed to an unknown source or a social source - shifts the valence of collective future thinking. In Experiment 1, participants completed an unrelated task (standard control con

Survivor Guilt as a Mediator Between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Pessimism Schema After Türkiye-Syria Earthquake.

This research examines the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of the survivors and their changing social situations after the earthquake and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and survivor's guilt. It also examines the mediating role of survivor guilt between early maladaptive schemas and PTSD severity. The study involved 127 people exposed to the 6 February 2023, southern and central Türkiye and northern and western Syria earthquake. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics, changing living conditions due to the earthquake, and feelings and thoughts of survivor gu

Socioeconomic, Behavioural, and Social Health Correlates of Optimism and Pessimism in Older Men and Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Optimism is a disposition characterised by positive future expectancies, while pessimism is characterised by expecting the worst. High optimism and low pessimism promote the health of older adults and may potentiate full engagement in life. We identified socioeconomic, behavioural, and social factors associated with optimism and pessimism in older adults. METHODS: Participants included 10,146 community-dwelling, apparently healthy Australian adults aged 70 years and over from the ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP). Optimism and pessimism were measured using the rev

Independent and Joint Associations of Pessimism, Total Calorie Intake and Acid-Producing Diets with Insomnia Symptoms among Breast Cancer Survivors.

Insomnia is prevalent in up to 40% of breast cancer survivors. Few studies have examined pessimism and dietary factors as risk factors for insomnia among breast cancer survivors. We leveraged a cohort of 2944 breast cancer survivors who enrolled in the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study; these survivors provided dietary, insomnia, mental health, demographic, and lifestyle information at baseline and at 1- and 4-year follow-up assessments. Insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)-Insomnia Rating Scale, and pessimism was assessed using the Life Orientation T

Antisocial personality disorder and therapeutic pessimism - how can mentalization-based treatment contribute to an increased therapeutic optimism among health professionals?

Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is associated with therapeutic pessimism among health professionals. Several variables are associated with obstacles in therapist's willingness to treat ASPD. Variables that are relevant are (i) confusion associated with the term ASPD, (ii) characteristics of the disorder, (iii) attitudes, experiences, and knowledge clinicians possess, and (iv) insufficient management of countertransference. We assume that therapeutic pessimism is related to the lack of evidence-based, effective treatment for individuals with ASPD. This is problematic because ASPD is asso

The interplay of coping styles and optimism/pessimism in shaping mental health in long-term survivors of malignant melanoma: a register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Optimism and pessimism are stable, overarching dispositions that influence mental health, especially in stressful life situations, such as cancer survival. They have been associated with more specific coping strategies. This study sought to investigate a theoretically-based model of their interplay in shaping depressive and anxiety symptoms to inform prevention and intervention efforts. METHODS: The registry-based study included 689 survivors of malignant melanoma. We assessed sociodemographic and disease-related variables, optimism/pessimism (LOT-R), coping strategies (BC), depre

Pessimism or optimism? A tri-spatial analysis of public risk perception bias and its influencing mechanisms: evidence from 31 major cities in China.

BACKGROUND: Public risk perception bias (PRPB) is a critical psychological and social determinant that substantially shapes public health outcomes and the effectiveness of safety governance-particularly during large-scale crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid increasingly complex urban risk landscapes, traditional single/dual-spatial frameworks fail to capture PRPB's multi-source and interactive nature. METHODS: This study develops an Extended Tri-Spatial Prism Model to measure PRPB across 31 major Chinese cities (2017-2023) using multi-source data and explores its spatiotemporal dynamics a

Protective Behaviors for COVID-19 Were Associated With Fewer Psychological Impacts on Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased psychological distress among common people and has caused health care providers, such as nurses, to experience tremendous stress. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study assessed the psychological impacts on nurses in a community hospital in Taiwan, including major depressive disorder (MDD), posttraumatic stress (PTS), and pessimism. According to transactional theory, coping strategies and personal factors have psychological impacts. We hypothesized that behavioral responses to COVID-19 (problem-focused coping) are more effective in reduc

Early Maladaptive Schemas as Core Therapeutic Targets in Eating Disorders and Obesity: A Schema Therapy-Informed Network Analysis.

Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are stable cognitive-emotional patterns central to the psychopathology of eating disorders (EDs) and obesity. This study used a schema therapy-informed network analysis to explore the structure and significance of EMSs in people with anorexia nervosa (AN, n = 129), bulimia nervosa (BN, n = 124), binge-eating disorder (BED, n = 166), and obesity (n = 152). Networks were modelled using the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3), with expected influence as the main centrality, in a final sample of 571 patients. In AN, the most central schemas were Defectiveness/Shame
