Small ruminants in Uganda are affected by a highly contagious disease called Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), commonly referred to as goat plague. It is highly contagious and has high mortality and morbidity. The disease can be controlled through vaccination, but the vaccine is not readily available and accessible in the Ugandan market, especially in the areas where the PPR problem has been identified. Furthermore, farmers tend to believe that vaccination is the mandate of the government, who should therefore bear the cost of its delivery. Therefore, the drivers of vaccination delivery become

In 2015, the OIE and FAO launched a global eradication programme for Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). Vaccination is a major component of this strategy yet the costs of implementing a campaign are unknown or based on assumptions without field-based verification necessary for effective economic planning. This study used experiences of attending four PPR vaccination campaigns in Ethiopia to estimate various cost components in pastoral and mixed-crop livestock systems. These components included: cost of vaccine; vaccine transport from the producer to the local storage facility; storage of vaccin

Eradication can be defined as permanent elimination of the occurrence of a given infectious disease. A joint FAO/OIE announcement of global rinderpest eradication was declared in 2011. The announcement from two international organizations indicates that the rinderpest virus, like the smallpox virus, will remain only in authorized laboratories. After rinderpest eradication, the relevant researchers shifted their focus on next target-peste des petits ruminants, since they mostly share similarities in such characteristics as etiology and pathology. This paper, on the one hand, analyzed objective

Production of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) vaccines in Russia is based on two attenuated virus strains ("45G37/35-k" and "ARRIAH") of common origin. Here, the identity of the strain PPRV/45G37/35-k was investigated using a full genome, Illumina deep sequencing approach. Phylogenomic analysis showed that PPRV/45G37/35-k belongs to the same lineage as the widely used PPRV vaccine strain Nigeria/75/1 (lineage II). However, 248 nucleotide differences separate the genomes of these vaccine strains, indicating that the PPRV vaccine strains produced in Russia are new strains not yet recognised by

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an infectious disease caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) that mainly produces respiratory symptoms in affected animals, resulting in great losses in the world's agriculture industry every year. Single-domain variable heavy chain (VHH) antibody fragments, also referred to as nanobodies, have high expression yields and other advantages including ease of purification and high solubility.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to obtain a single-domain antibody with good reactivity and high specificity against PPRV.
METHODS: A

Concurrent infection with peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) and pestivirus was diagnosed in stillborn twin lambs. With the flock history, the findings of epidermal syncytial cells and necrotizing bronchitis/bronchiolitis prompted testing for PPRV infection, and PPRV antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the skin, lungs, kidneys, rumen, and thymus. Macroscopic anomalies that were typical of border disease included scoliosis, brachygnathism, prognathism, arthrogryposis, hydranencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, and hairy fleece; pestiviral antigen was detected by IHC in the b

Goatpox, sheeppox, and peste-des-petits-ruminants (PPR) are economically important virus diseases affecting goats and sheep, which often cause coinfection/comorbidities in the field. Coinfection with these viruses leads to enhanced infection in natural scenarios in terms of morbidities and mortalities. Currently, individual live attenuated vaccines are being used to mitigate these diseases and research on combination vaccines for these diseases is encouraging. For the preparation of combination vaccines, vaccine strains of the peste-des-petits-ruminants virus (PPRV), goatpox virus (GTPV), and

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), an economically important viral transboundary disease of small ruminants is not only prevalent in Pakistan but also in other countries where people rely on agriculture and animal products. The present study was aimed at describing the pathology and antigen localization in natural PPR infections in local (Kajli sheep; Beetal goats) as well as imported small ruminant breeds (Dorper sheep; Australian Boer goat). Morbidity and mortality rates were significantly (P < 0.001) higher in indigenous Kajli sheep (75.37 and 32.80%) and Beetal goats (81.10 and 37.24%) as c

This study, carried out between September 2006 and January 2007, is the first cross-sectional serological investigation of peste-des-petits-ruminants (PPR) and Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Tunisia. The objective was to assess the potential need to develop a dual, recombinant PPR-RVF vaccine and how such a vaccine might be utilised in Tunisia. An overall PPR seroprevalence of 7.45% was determined, a finding supported by the high specificity (99.4%) and sensitivity (94.5%) of the ELISA used. On assessment of the diversity and density of mosquitoes in the sampling area, four species of RVF-vectors

The present study describes pathologic and virologic findings in 15 sheep and 6 goats that died of natural peste des petits ruminants virus infection in Turkey. Pathologic findings included erosive-ulcerative stomatitis, fibrino-necrotic tracheitis, bronchointerstitial pneumonia, multifocal coagulation necroses in the liver, and severe lymphocytolysis in lymphoid tissues. Syncytial cells were conspicuous, especially in the oral mucosa, pulmonary alveoli, liver, and lymphoid tissues. In addition to the typical tissue distribution, eosinophilic intracytoplasmic and/or intranuclear inclusions wer

Obtaining a better overview of peste des petits ruminants epidemiology in North-East Africa is critical for guiding the ongoing PPR Global Control and Eradication Strategy. This study demonstrated PPRV exposure and potential endemic circulation among small ruminants through the identification and characterization of PPRV strains in lung tissues from slaughtered SR in Sudan. Lung tissues displaying pneumonia, comprising 83 cases (65 sheep and 18 goats), were collected from slaughterhouses in five Sudanese states. An IC-ELISA screening indicated an overall estimated antigenic prevalence of 24.1%

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of sheep and goats that causes major economic losses and livelihood disruption across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Goats are often more severely affected than sheep, particularly in endemic smallholder systems, where high turnover, nutritional stress, and limited veterinary infrastructure sustain viral transmission. Despite effective live attenuated vaccines and the ongoing FAO-WOAH Global Eradication Programme, PPR remains widely distributed, indicating that vaccination alone is insufficient without unde

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of small ruminants caused by the PPR virus (PPRV). Despite Ethiopia's goal of eradicating PPR by 2027 through a risk-based vaccination strategy, the disease remains endemic, with 554 outbreaks reported nationwide. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the North Gondar Zone, Ethiopia, between June 2024 and February 2025 to evaluate antibody responses in vaccinated small ruminants and estimate PPRV seroprevalence in unvaccinated flocks. A multistage cluster sampling design was used to select the study sites

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of small ruminants caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), which is classified into four distinct genetic lineages (I-IV). A critical concern is the rapid and widespread expansion of lineage IV (LIV) across West Africa over the past decade. In this study, we generated full or partial genome sequence from 26 new PPRV samples, including historical (pre-2000) and recent African LIV isolates, offering the first opportunity to investigate the evolutionary history of LIV in Africa and identify genetic events potenti

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae and represents a major threat to small livestock industry. In recent years, outbreaks of PPR have occurred in Turkey and North Africa. In endemic areas, disease prevention is accomplished using live‑attenuated vaccines. However, the use of live vaccines in non‑endemic regions, such as Europe, is not approved by Veterinary Authorities. In these regions inactivated vaccines are then the only viable alternative. In this study an inactivated vaccine (iPPRVac) was formulated with either a water‑in‑oil emulsion (ISA 71 VG)

Peste des petits ruminants is responsible for an economically important plague of small ruminants that is endemic across much of the developing world. Here we describe the detection and characterisation of a PPR virus from a recent outbreak in Tamil Nadu, India. We demonstrate the isolation of PPR virus from rectal swab and highlight the potential spread of disease to in-contact animals through faecal materials and use of faecal material as non-invasive method of sampling for susceptible wild ruminants. Finally we have performed a comprehensive 'multi-gene' assessment of lineage IV isolates of
