Stochastic numerical head phantoms to enable virtual imaging studies of transcranial photoacoustic computed tomography.

Transcranial photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT) is an emerging neuroimaging modality, but skull-induced aberrations can result in severe image artifacts if not compensated for during image reconstruction. The development of advanced image reconstruction methods for transcranial PACT is hindered by the lack of well-characterized, clinically relevant evaluation frameworks. Virtual imaging studies offer a solution, but require realistic numerical phantoms. To address this need, this study introduces a framework for generating ensembles of realistic 3D numerical head phantoms for virtual ima

Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope Imaging of Custom-Made Multi-Cylinder Phantoms: Theory and Experiment.

In this work, the image formation in a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) is investigated for custom-made multi-cylinder phantoms. The cylinder structures were fabricated using 3D direct laser writing and consist of parallel cylinders with radii of 5 and 10 μm for the respective multi-cylinder phantom, with overall dimensions of about 200×200×200 μm3. Measurements were performed for different refractive index differences and by varying other parameters of the measurement system, such as pinhole size or numerical aperture (NA). For theoretical comparison, the confocal setup was implement

Spatio-temporal anomalous diffusion imaging: results in controlled phantoms and in excised human meningiomas.

Recently, we measured two anomalous diffusion (AD) parameters: the spatial and the temporal AD indices, called γ and α, respectively, by using spectroscopic pulse gradient field methods. We showed that γ quantifies pseudo-superdiffusion processes, while α quantifies subdiffusion processes. Here, we propose γ and α maps obtained in a controlled heterogeneous phantom, comprised of packed micro-beads in water and in excised human meningiomas. In few words, α maps represent the multi-scale spatial distribution of the disorder degree in the system, while γ maps are influenced by local internal grad

Development of a novel anthropomorphic bone phantoms for mimicking osteoporosis in medical imaging development.

Osteoporosis (OP) is characterised by loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and deterioration of trabecular microarchitecture, yet routine clinical imaging techniques remain limited in their ability to fully characterise bone microarchitecture. As new imaging technologies are developed, the potential for point of care bone assessment with both density and microarchitectural parameters of bone becomes a reality. Although advanced imaging modalities such as high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) offers improved sensitivity to bone structure, this is primarily focused

Ultrawideband, Stable Normal and Cancer Skin Tissue Phantoms for Millimeter-Wave Skin Cancer Imaging.

This work introduces new, stable, and broadband skin-equivalent semisolid phantoms for mimicking interactions of millimeter waves with the human skin and skin tumors. Realistic skin phantoms serve as an invaluable tool for exploring the feasibility of new technologies and improving design concepts related to millimeter-wave skin cancer detection methods. Normal and malignant skin tissues are separately mimicked by using appropriate mixtures of deionized water, oil, gelatin powder, formaldehyde, TX-150 (a gelling agent, widely referred to as "super stuff"), and detergent. The dielectric propert

Sensitivity and Specificity Estimation Using Patient-Specific Microwave Imaging in Diverse Experimental Breast Phantoms.

Many new clinical investigations of microwave breast imaging have been published in recent years. Trials with over one hundred participants have indicated the potential of microwave imaging to detect breast cancer, with particularly encouraging sensitivity results reported from women with dense breasts. The next phase of clinical trials will involve larger and more diverse populations, including women with no breast abnormalities or benign breast diseases. These trials will need to address clinical efficacy in terms of sensitivity and specificity. A number of challenges exist when using microw

Helical toroid phantom for 3D flow imaging investigations.

The medical physics community has hitherto lacked an effective calibration phantom to holistically evaluate the performance of three-dimensional (3D) flow imaging techniques. Here, we present the design of a new omnidirectional, three-component (3-C) flow phantom whose lumen is consisted of a helical toroid structure (4 mm lumen diameter; helically winded for 5 revolutions over a torus with 10 mm radius; 5 mm helix radius). This phantom's intraluminal flow trajectory embraces all combinations of x, y, and z directional components, as confirmed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulatio

Development of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phantom.

BACKGROUND: Anthropomorphic phantoms play an important role in routine clinical practice. They can be used to calibrate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, control the diagnostic equipment quality, and reduce the acquisition time. The latter is especially critical for diagnosing fetal anomalies, which requires optimal image quality within the shortest possible time. This paper aims to develop an MRI fetal phantom and determine the materials that best mimic the magnetic resonance (MR) characteristics of its internal organs. Future phantom features will include simulations of fetal limb m

A virtual imaging framework for three-dimensional quantitative optoacoustic tomography using stochastic numerical breast phantoms.

Optoacoustic tomography (OAT) is a promising modality for breast cancer diagnosis because tumor angiogenesis and, potentially, hypoxia can be visualized using quantitative OAT (qOAT) techniques. Clinically meaningful inference generally requires accurate image reconstruction, which depends on measurement quality and the imager design. Virtual imaging offers a cost-effective alternative to experimental prototyping for system design evaluation and supports computational method development. This work presents a comprehensive virtual imaging framework for breast qOAT, extending a stochastic numeri

Radiomics feature stability and distinction power in organic low-contrast phantoms for novel CBCT imaging.

PURPOSE: Due to the prevalence of daily cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging in radiation therapy, radiomics analysis has great potential to detect early radiation induced tissue changes. Clinical applications of radiomics using CBCT imaging have been hindered by lack of stability in radiomics features and comparably poor image quality. Novel CBCT imaging devices promise improved quality comparable to those of fan-beam CTs. Using organic low-contrast phantoms and patient data, this study aims to assess the potential of novel CBCT imaging for radiomics analysis by testing the robustness

Feasibility of 830 nm laser imaging for vein localization in dark skin tissue-mimicking phantoms.

Accessing blood vessels by medical professionals has been a challenge in healthcare centers worldwide. The main objective of this work is to investigate the localization of blood vessels in dark skin based on near infrared laser imaging. An 830 nm diode laser was used as a light source to irradiate dark skin mimicking optical phantoms. Phantoms were constructed to simulate dark skin with embedded polymer tubes filled with human blood to mimic subcutaneous veins. Appropriate image processing techniques were also used to enhance the detection and depth resolved differentiation of the vein phanto

The development of a population of 4D pediatric XCAT phantoms for imaging research and optimization.

PURPOSE: We previously developed a set of highly detailed 4D reference pediatric extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantoms at ages of newborn, 1, 5, 10, and 15 yr with organ and tissue masses matched to ICRP Publication 89 values. In this work, we extended this reference set to a series of 64 pediatric phantoms of varying age and height and body mass percentiles representative of the public at large. The models will provide a library of pediatric phantoms for optimizing pediatric imaging protocols. METHODS: High resolution positron emission tomography-computed tomography data obtained from the D

CT texture phantom dataset with paired image quality assessments for quantitative imaging.

To establish a public repository of computed tomography (CT) texture phantom images paired with objective 3D image quality measurements from multiple scanner models using a diverse range of imaging protocols, facilitating investigations into relationships between image quality and quantitative imaging features. Three specialized CT phantoms were scanned: (1) the Corgi® phantom for image quality assessment, (2) a radiomics liver phantom, and (3) an open-source 3D-printed texture phantom. Image quality assessment included measurement of contrast-to-noise ratio, 3D modulation transfer function, a

3D-printed phantoms for measuring lateral resolution and contrast performance of ophthalmic adaptive optics imaging systems.

Adaptive optics (AO) imaging of the human retina is an emerging clinical technique that confers the highest possible spatial resolution of this tissue in vivo. To support consistent imaging performance across time and devices, we have designed and fabricated a robust and user-friendly phantom that can determine lateral resolution and contrast with 3D-printed microstructures approximating cone photoreceptors. We have carefully characterized multiple copies of this phantom via microscopic imaging and metrology, and we also demonstrated the phantom's utility with two different AO imaging modaliti

Synthetic head and neck and phantom images for determining deformable image registration accuracy in magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides noninvasive evaluation of patient's anatomy without using ionizing radiation. Due to this and the high soft-tissue contrast, MRI use has increased and has potential for use in longitudinal studies where changes in patients' anatomy or tumors at different time points are compared. Deformable image registration can be useful for these studies. Here, we describe two datasets that can be used to evaluate the registration accuracy of systems for MR images, as it cannot be assumed to be the same as that measured on CT images. Design and CT imaging of casper, an anthropomorphic breathing thorax phantom.

The goal of this work was to build an anthropomorphic thorax phantom capable of breathing motion with materials mimicking human tissues in x-ray imaging applications. The thorax phantom, named Casper, was composed of resin (body), foam (lungs), glow polyactic acid (bones) and natural polyactic acid (tumours placed in the lungs). X-ray attenuation properties of all materials prior to manufacturing were evaluated by means of photon-counting computed tomography (CT) imaging on a table-top system. Breathing motion was achieved by a scotch-yoke mechanism with diaphragm motion frequencies of 10-20 r

Development of an Anthropomorphic Phantom of the Axillary Region for Microwave Imaging Assessment.

We produced an anatomically and dielectrically realistic phantom of the axillary region to enable the experimental assessment of Axillary Lymph Node (ALN) imaging using microwave imaging technology. We segmented a thoracic Computed Tomography (CT) scan and created a computer-aided designed file containing the anatomical configuration of the axillary region. The phantom comprises five 3D-printed parts representing the main tissues of interest of the axillary region for the purpose of microwave imaging: fat, muscle, bone, ALNs, and lung. The phantom allows the experimental assessment of multiple
