BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are increasingly attempting to address non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) by screening patients for health-related social needs (HRSNs). Cross-training pharmacy technicians as community health workers (PhT-CHWs) may expand pharmacies' capacity to provide these services, but little is known about the community resources identified by PhT-CHWs during training or their associated Z-codes. Characterizing these resources may inform implementation of pharmacy-based community resource referral services.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the NMDoH resources identified by PhTs

PURPOSE: Pharmacy technicians play an expanding role in clinical support and operational services, yet workforce instability and inconsistent training standards continue to challenge the profession. A highly trained and stable pharmacy technician workforce is essential to achieving the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030's vision of comprehensive medication management in pharmacy practice. A dual-credit high school and college pharmacy technician program with an associate degree pathway may improve entry-level competency, support prof

In the Netherlands, special guidelines and safety precautions were introduced about 10 y ago for preparation and administration of antineoplastic agents. However, little is known about the effectiveness of these measures. In this study, occupational exposure to antineoplastic agents of nine pharmacy technicians who were involved in drug preparation was investigated. Cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil, and methotrexate accounted for 95% of the antineoplastic agents prepared; therefore, the presence of these compounds was monitored. During preparation, cyclophosphamide was detected in the air of t

INTRODUCTION: People who are housebound frequently miss general practice-based long-term condition (LTC) reviews. Missingness from LTC reviews are associated with poorer health outcomes and higher costs. General practice pharmacy collaboration within primary care teams may help address the housebound missingness care gap.
AIM: To evaluate the feasibility of implementing the Care-at-Home Pharmacotherapy Service, a general practice pharmacy technician-clinical pharmacist domiciliary review model for housebound patients living in areas of socioeconomic deprivation.
METHOD: Pre-post intervention

Tobacco use remains a leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality, with pharmacotherapy and counseling recognized as effective cessation aids. Yet, the potential role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in tobacco cessation services is underutilized. This study explores the integration of such services in community pharmacies, identifying facilitators and barriers to their implementation. A qualitative study was conducted across seven community pharmacies in California that were affiliated with the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network. Participants included 22 pharmacists

BACKGROUND: Immunosuppressive therapies are essential for transplant recipients and are increasingly prescribed in autoimmune and oncologic conditions. In France, community pharmacists are legally involved in therapeutic patient education (TPE) and medication counseling. However, their level of knowledge regarding immunosuppressive therapies remains poorly documented.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of French pharmacy professionals-pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students-regarding Immunosuppressive therapies, particularly in the context of transplant pati

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all facets of pharmacy education, including accreditation and certification activities. In a very short period of time, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs and pharmacy technician programs had to convert to teaching classes online, experiential education sites had to figure out how to train student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians while ensuring their safety, continuing pharmacy education providers had to move their in-person courses online, and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) had to postpone accreditation site visits. Given the

The occupational exposure to cyclophosphamide (CP), ifosfamide (IF), 5-fluorouracil (5FU), and methotrexate (MTX) of 25 pharmacy technicians and nurses from four departments of a hospital was investigated. Previously developed methods for the detection of exposure to some antineoplastic agents were validated. Exposure to CP, IF, 5FU, and MTX was measured by the analysis of these compounds in the environment (air samples and wipe samples from possible contaminated surfaces and objects). Contamination of the work environment was found not only on the working trays of the hoods and on the floors

The importance of health workforce provision has gained significance and is now considered one of the most pressing issues worldwide, across all health professions. Against this background, the objectives of the work presented here were to systematically explore and identify contemporary issues surrounding expansion of the global pharmacy workforce in order to assist the International Pharmaceutical Federation working group on the workforce. International peer and non-peer-reviewed literature published between January 1998 and February 2008 was analysed. Articles were collated by performing se

Opioid overdoses in the United States remain a significant public health concern. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is stigmatized, exacerbating negative health outcomes. Reducing stigma in healthcare, including in pharmacies, is critical. The "Let's Talk Stigma" program was collaboratively developed with two schools of pharmacy, a local health department, and individuals with lived drug use experience. It aimed to reduce OUD-related stigma among pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, student pharmacists, and other allied health professionals. The program included six core components: a podcast, continuin

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that some medications, including proton pump inhibitors and β-agonist inhalers, are administered to hospitalized patients and sometimes continued without indications. Medication reconciliation has been offered as one mechanism to reduce the frequency of such medication errors and is now mandated by the Joint Commission (NPSG.03.06.01). We hypothesized that (1) β agonists and acid-blocking medications are prescribed following critical illness without indications, and (2) medication reconciliation can reduce the frequency of inappropriate continuation of thes

BACKGROUND: There have been multiple reported pharmacy initiatives to reduce opioid misuse and accidental overdose to address our nation's public health crisis. To date, there has not been a description in the literature of a community pharmacy follow-up initiative for dispensed opioids.
METHODS: A follow-up program was designed and implemented in community pharmacies as part of a previously developed opioid overdose and misuse prevention program (ONE Program). Five to twelve days after the dispensing of an opioid, pharmacy technicians called the patient to follow up on opioid safety topics.

INTRODUCTION: People with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) require a multidisciplinary care team due to disease complexity. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) notes that pharmacists are recommended, while other organizations consider pharmacists required. In 2016, the CFF initiated a grant program for CFF-accredited care centers and affiliate programs (CFF-ACCAP) to implement outpatient pharmacy services. The primary objective of this study was to compare surveys regarding pharmacy involvement in CFF-ACCAP pre- and post-grant implementation.
METHODS: This was an IRB-approved, survey-based study. The

PURPOSE: Antiobesity medications (AOMs) are increasingly utilized in patients before and after bariatric surgery. However, patients experience challenges to initiating and continuing these medications, leading to high real-world rates of discontinuation. We describe collaboration between an ambulatory care pharmacy service and bariatric surgeons as an opportunity to enhance patient care and medication access, with the collaboration encompassing ambulatory care pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, surgeons, advanced practice providers, and clinic support staff. The strategies employed to design,

With regard to the hospital drug supply chain, the safest system is the individual automated drug dispensing one provided by the pharmacy. For several years we have been trying to convince hospital decision-makers to set it up. In the meantime, to mitigate the risks of medication errors incurred by patients and caregivers, we have set up several work teams within the care units. These teams, made up of one pharmacist and one or two hospital pharmacy technicians, who notably manage the medicine cabinets in care units. The close collaboration with doctors and nurses developed over the years was
