Phase-transition failure in aged skeletal muscle regeneration.

Aged skeletal muscle is impaired at every phase of post-injury repair that has been examined, with myeloid recruitment delayed and skewed in composition, debris degradation lagging behind uptake, and muscle stem cell (MuSC) activation following a conserved trajectory at delayed kinetics. Deficits inside a phase may be differences of degree that a longer window absorbs, whereas the transition between phases offers no comparable slack. Each transition is triggered by a defined switch in signal, either the fall in damage input after debris degradation, the TNF/TGF-β balance that permits fibro-adi

Phase Transition of Moiré Edges in Interfacial Ferroelectrics.

Moiré superlattices based on twisted van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have recently emerged as platforms exhibiting intriguing electrical properties. In particular, interfacial ferroelectricity has been observed in marginally twisted moiré superlattices that break the inversion symmetry, exhibiting adjacent domains with opposite polarization. Polarization switching in these systems is mediated by moiré edge shifts; however, the underlying physical mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this work, by combining in situ scanning probe microscopy with theoretical modeling, we reveal a phase t

Latent Phase Transition in Two-Dimensional PdSe_{2}.

Conventional phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) materials typically involve gradual and progressive structural evolution upon external stimuli. However, analogous to the latent heat phenomena in classical thermodynamics, where energy absorption leads to internal reconfiguration without immediate phase change, we report an unconventional "latent phase transition" in 2D palladium diselenide (PdSe_{2}), uncovered through in situ atomic scanning transmission electron microscopy. During Pd atom implantation and subsequent thermal annealing, the PdSe_{2} lattice absorbs input energy without s

Decoding physical environment's role in protein phase transition.

Phase transitions, as fundamental phenomena in physical sciences, are well-studied and a full theoretical framework has been established. The research has recently expanded into biological sciences after the milestone discovery of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), and the latest studies are focusing not only LLPS but also liquid-solid phase transition (LSPT). These phase transitions are important fundamental biological processes such as formation of membraneless organelles, and pathogenesis of diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, type 2 diabetes, and amyloidogenic disorders. These

Nanogels with volume phase transition for biomedical applications.

Nanogels, of which the three-dimensional network structures are covalently crosslinked by crosslinkers and supported by large number of hydrogen bonds, present unique volume phase transition (VPT) and play significant roles in multiple biomedical applications. Based on hydrogen bonds, the VPT features including the shift, sharpness, and range of VPT, can be rationally designed and precisely controlled by simply regulating the monomer, comonomer, crosslinker, structure, deuteration, environmental stimuli, and so on, for tailored biomedical applications such as transcatheter arterial embolizatio

Phase Transition of Huntingtin: Factors and Pathological Relevance.

Formation of intracellular mutant Huntingtin (mHtt) aggregates is a hallmark of Huntington's disease (HD). The mechanisms underlying mHtt aggregation, however, are still not fully understood. A few recent studies indicated mHtt undergoes phase transition, bringing new clues to understand how mHtt aggregates assemble. Here in this mini review, we will summarize these findings with a focus on the factors that affect mHtt phase transition. We will also discuss the possible pathological roles of mHtt phase separation in HD.

Vesicle internalization proceeds via a morphological phase transition.

Vesicle internalization proceeds through a series of multivesicular topologies essential for endocytic transport and cellular compartmentalization. The energetic landscapes of related transitions, including vesicle budding and pearling, are known to be governed by the coupling of spontaneous curvature, leaflet area asymmetry, and reduced volume. However, the physical principles driving the structural transformation of hemifused intermediates remain unresolved. Using a continuum elastic model, we identify a morphological phase transition in hemifused invaginating vesicles, from an initial "eye"

Optogenetic control of GGGGCC repeat-containing RNA phase transition.

The GGGGCC (G4C2) hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the C9ORF72 gene is a major cause of both hereditary amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and familial frontotemporal dementia. Recent studies have shown that G4C2 hexanucleotide repeat-containing RNA transcripts ((G4C2)n RNA) could go through liquid-liquid phase separation to form RNA foci, which may elicit neurodegeneration. However, the direct causality between these abnormal RNA foci and neuronal toxicity remains to be demonstrated. Here we introduce an optogenetic control system that can induce the assembly and phase separation of (G4C2)n RNA

Dynamic Cellular Regulation of Proteasome Translocation and Phase Transition.

Proteasome dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many human diseases, and the proteasome system has emerged as a major therapeutic target for cancer treatment. Besides proteasome activity, the dynamics of proteasome localization provide another tier of mechanism for regulating proteasome function and cellular protein homeostasis. While proteasomes are highly enriched in the nucleus, they can dynamically reshuffle across cellular compartments in response to metabolic cues. This localization shift is coupled with autophagy as a major mechanism for cell survival under stress. Und

Bidirectional optoelectronic switching in protein by photoinduced phase transition.

Protein polymers conduct electricity due to the delocalization of π electrons along the conjugated main chains, but their photoconductivity often shows unidirectional tunability. We report a protein polymer with bidirectional optoelectronic conductivity because of reversible light intensity-dependent secondary structural transformation. The protein device shows a positive photocurrent under high light intensity (2.22 to 3.18 μW·μm-2 and the wavelength of 405-nanometer illumination) illumination and a negative photocurrent under low light intensity (0.32 to 1.91 μW·μm-2). Under low light intens

Quantifying and Minimizing Dissipation in a Nonequilibrium Phase Transition.

In a finite-time continuous phase transition, topological defects emerge as the system undergoes spontaneous symmetry breaking. The Kibble-Zurek mechanism predicts how the defect density scales with the quench rate. During such processes, dissipation also arises as the system fails to adiabatically follow the control protocol near the critical point. Quantifying and minimizing this dissipation is fundamentally relevant to nonequilibrium thermodynamics and practically important for energy-efficient computing and devices. However, experimentally measuring dissipation, and optimizing control prot

Pressure-Induced Structural Phase Transition and Superconductivity in NaSn5.

The structural and electronic properties of the tin-rich compound NaSn5 were investigated under pressures of up to 10 GPa on the basis of the evolutionary algorithm (EA) technique coupled with first-principles total energy calculations. Upon compression, the known metallic tetragonal P4̅21m phase transforms into a metallic hexagonal P6/mmm phase at 1.85 GPa accompanied by an unusual change in the existing form of Sn atoms. The P6/mmm phase can be interpreted as a quasi-layered sandwich structure with two Sn layers and one sodium layer. The presence of softening phonon modes and the existence o

Outcome of transition phase patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Across diagnosis groups, successful transition of adolescent and young adults from children's hospitals to adult care is often associated with decreased treatment adherence and treatment results. The aim of this study was to characterize disease activity and anti-rheumatic medications following transfer of care of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) patients to the adult clinic. METHOD: All consecutive JIA patients aged 16-20 years who visited the specific transition clinic in the rheumatology outpatient clinic of Helsinki University Hospital between November 2012 and May 2013 and

A Dynamically Induced Phase Transition in Na4P2S6─Ultrafast Na+ Mobility Triggering Rotor Phase Formation.

The physical properties of any crystalline solid, such as the irregular movement of ions or atoms, are closely linked to its structure. Changes in local structure or local defect chemistry are typically attributed to changes in ion hopping. Conversely, one might also ask whether fast ionic diffusion can cause structural changes, finally initiating an overall phase transition. By using high-resolution 23Na and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) carried out at temperatures as high as 650 °C, we show that changes of the local Na+ environment in the Na+-conducting model compound Na4P2S6 indeed p

Layering Governs Phase Transitions in Nanoconfined Water.

At molecular-scale confinement, water organizes into discrete layers whose collective rearrangements control its phase behavior. Building on the well-established oscillations of pressure, diffusivity, and other thermodynamic quantities with channel height h, we show that these oscillations originate from two distinct microscopic transition pathways in the hydrogen-bond (HB) network. Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we identify a constant-layer phase transition (CLPT), in which freezing develops continuously within a fixed number of layers via the gradual strengthening of intrala

Phase transitions in the q-state clock model.

The q-state clock model, sometimes called the discrete XY model, is known to show a second-order (symmetry-breaking) phase transition in two dimensions for q≤4 (q=2 corresponds to the Ising model). On the other hand, the q→∞ limit of the model corresponds to the XY model, which shows the infinite order (non-symmetry-breaking) Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition in two dimensions. Interestingly, the two-dimensional clock model with q≥5 is predicted to show three different phases and two associated phase transitions. There are varying opinions about the actual characters of ph

Postselected Criticality in Measurement-Induced Phase Transitions.

Information-theoretic phase transitions, such as the measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT), characterize the robustness of quantum dynamics to local monitoring and are naturally formulated in terms of trajectories conditioned on typical measurement outcomes, which are naively accessible only through postselection. Here, we implement forced measurements to investigate how explicit postselection alters the nature of the transition. We find that postselection fundamentally alters the universality class by reweighting trajectories that are otherwise rare. In particular, we obtain a correlati

Phase transitions in disordered altermagnetic Josephson junctions.

Altermagnetic Josephson junctions (AMJJs) can host unconventionalphase andphase despite vanishing net magnetizations. Whether these phases are stable against disorder existing in real materials remains an open question. Here, we investigate impact of disorder on exotic phases in two-dimensional AMJJs consisting of two conventional superconductors mediated by a-wave altermagnet. We show that disorder is able to drive phase transitions from the exoticphase to conventionalphase, accompanied by a substantial suppression of critical current. This behavior is attributed to modifications of the tunne

Superstructural phase transitions in polymer-grafted nanooctahedra.

Superlattices of polyhedral nanocrystals exhibit emergent properties defined by their structural arrangements, but native nanocrystal ligands often limit their programmability. Polymeric ligands address this limitation by enabling tunable nanocrystal softness through modifications of polymer molecular weight and grafting density. Here, we investigate phase transitions in polymer-grafted nanooctahedra by varying polymer length, nanocrystal size, truncation, and ligand density. In two-dimensional superlattices, longer polymers or smaller nanooctahedra induce a transition from orientationally ord

Dynamical phase transitions in the nonreciprocal Ising model.

Nonreciprocal interactions in many-body systems lead to time-dependent states, commonly observed in biological, chemical, and ecological systems. The stability of these states in the thermodynamic limit and the critical behavior of the phase transition from static to time-dependent states are not yet fully understood. To address these questions, we study a minimalistic system endowed with nonreciprocal interactions: an Ising model with two spin species having opposing goals. The mean-field equation predicts three stable phases: disorder, static order, and a time-dependent swap phase. Large-sca
