The study on development regularities and psychopathological structure of anxiety phobic disorders has been conducted in 92 patients, aged 5-15 years. The structure of anxiety-phobic complex is represented. A level of anxiety affect development (primary or secondary, presence and direction of affect cognitive component) and negative effectiveness were emerged in the children as common obligate anxiety-phobic characteristics, which contributed to complex structure stability. Three anxiety-phobic disorder types--situation-dependent, personality-dependent and vital--were distinguished. The first

Age peculiarities of the comorbidity of the phobic syndrome with other psychopathological formations have been studied on the basis of clinical and follow-up examination of 314 patients, 257 male, 57 female, aged 15-17 years old, with phobic disorders diagnosed according to ICD-10 criteria. Simple phobias found in 21% of patients existed as an isolated phenomenon displaying no comorbidity. Asthenic syndrome was most frequently concomitant with phobias (293 patients); personality anomalies were found in 167 patients including 31 with personality disorders; affective syndrome was observed in 61

The study aims at clinical characteristics of obsessive-phobic disorders (OPD) in schizophrenia with regard to their modification in main disease development and interaction with basic schizophrenia symptoms (positive and negative). Eighteen patients, mean age 28.2 years, were examined. An affinity degree of schizophrenia to OPD was found to be associated with endogenous progressive process. In slowly progressive schizophrenia, an affinity is selective, concerning to one of the obsessive phobic syndrome component (phobic component proper or avoidance behavior) and realizing in either positive,

Obsessive compulsive disorder shares numerous clinical features with other anxiety disorders. To study the relationship between OCD and other anxiety disorders, the authors administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III to 36 OCD patients. Thirty-nine percent (14) of patients reported a lifetime history of panic attacks, and 14% (5) met DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder at the time of interview. Fourteen percent (5) met criteria for social phobias, and 19% (7) met criteria for simple phobias. Eighteen patients were treated with clomipramine in doses of at least 100 mg/day for 3

Author studied 330 patients (265 boys and 65 girls), aged 15-17 years, with phobic disorders. The common trends of the sociogenic pathomorphosis of these disorders were revealed. The socially determined pathomorphosis of phobias in adolescence manifests itself in the appearance of new phobic objects, changes in subjects of phobias and frequencies of their types. Social phobic states, most vulnerable to environmental factors, that reached the level of psychopatologically completed syndromes were the most frequent (20.7% of all phobias). In their structure, there were fears of social interaction

Panic disorder and phobic anxiety disorders are common disorders that are often chronic and disabling. Genetic epidemiologic studies have documented that these disorders are familial and moderately heritable. Linkage studies have implicated several chromosomal regions that may harbor susceptibility genes; however, candidate gene association studies have not established a role for any specific loci to date. Increasing evidence from family and genetic studies suggests that genes underlying these disorders overlap and transcend diagnostic boundaries. Heritable forms of anxious temperament, anxiet

A review of the clinical literature to date has shown that the nature of the relationship between phobic disorders and anxiety states is still unclear. As a wide range of symptoms are shared by patients with all DSM-III anxiety disorder diagnoses, at this stage there is still a need to investigate the latent dimensions which distinguish the anxiety disorder subtypes. In the present study 176 patients with the DSM-III diagnoses of agoraphobia with panic attacks, social phobia, panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder completed the Fear Survey Schedule, Fear Questionnaire, Hostility and D

The associations between prognostic factors and outcome with four treatment methods for phobic disorders were studied in 103 women. The prognostic factors were sociodemographic, intelligence, personality, early interpersonal relations, aspects of previous and current mental disorder, and intensity of symptoms at start of treatment. All patients received basal therapy, which implied information, advice on exposure in vivo, and anxiolytics. One group received this treatment only (B), while others received supplementary treatment, with therapist-directed prolonged exposure in vivo (PE), supportiv

Eating disorders (ED) are prevalent mental illnesses composed mainly of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders. Anxiety disorders are another set of mental illnesses, with phobic disorder (PD) being the most prevalent disorder. ED and PD are highly comorbid. The aim of this study is to assess, in 131 individuals attending an outpatient clinic for different health issues, the level of fear related to situations generating avoidance such as in social anxiety and specific phobias according to the fear questionnaire (FQ), the level of disgust according to the disgust scale (D

The two most-used treatments for phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders are exposure and drugs. In exposure therapy, the patient is persuaded to re-enter the phobia- or ritual-evoking situation and to stay there despite the ensuing panic until it starts to subside, which may take 1 h or more. The patient does this repeatedly and systematically, noting outcome in an exposure-homework diary which the clinician reviews. Controlled studies show that such self-exposure treatment (requiring little time from the clinician) has lasting value. Only a minority of cases need additional therapist-aided

BACKGROUND: Patients with a double diagnosis of alcohol dependence and phobic disorders are a common phenomenon in both alcohol and anxiety disorder clinics. If we are to provide optimum treatment we need to know more about the clinical characteristics of this group of comorbid patients.
OBJECTIVE: To answer the following questions. (1). What are the clinical characteristics of treatment-seeking alcohol-dependent patients with a comorbid phobic disorder? (2). Are alcohol dependence and other clinical characteristics of comorbid patients different from those of 'pure' alcohol-dependent patient

Eighty-eight panic disorder patients were divided into three groups according to the extent of their phobic avoidance (none, limited, or extensive). These groups were compared on three personality disorder instruments: the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality Disorders, the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire, and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. Phobic patients were found to have significantly more dependent personality disorder and DSM-III third-cluster personality disorders than nonphobic patients. A subgroup of patients with social phobic symptoms was found to resemble th

OBJECTIVE: Hypnosis is classically presented as a useful psychotherapy for various psychiatric conditions, especially in the field of stress and anxiety. However, its place in therapeutic of chronic anxiety disorders remains unclear and questioned. Thus, the goal of this systematic review was to analyse the papers reporting clinical data on the efficacy of hypnosis in anxiety disorders.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted on Pubmed to retrieve all original papers, published between 1980 and 2015, reporting clinical information on the efficacy of hypnosis in six categories of anxiety di

The results of intravenous clomipramine therapy in 118 patients suffering from obsessional syndromes and phobic anxiety states are reviewed. A remarkable consistency of improvement was observed especially in those patients suffering from obsessional symptoms. Better results were obtained in patients lacking hysterical personality traits. A brief reference is made to a pilot study involving the use of the 16PF personality test in assessing the effect of clomipramine.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relation between phobic disorders and alcoholism in a Canadian community sample.
METHOD: Data came from the Mental Health Supplement of the Ontario Health Survey. The University of Michigan revision of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (UM-CIDI) was used to diagnose DSM-III-R psychiatric disorders in 8116 Canadian respondents between ages 15 and 64 years. Since the cross-system agreement (ICD-10 and DSM-III-R or DSM-IV) on the diagnosis of alcohol abuse is much lower than that for alcohol dependence, we also examined a WHO category, "hazardous alcohol

Phobic disorders are receiving much attention in psychiatric practice today. Agoraphobia, the most common of the phobic disorders, involves the risk of experiencing a panic attack in public places, thus discouraging the worker from fully participating in the labor market. This paper applies the economic tools of rational choice under uncertainty to the analysis of agoraphobia, with the purpose of gaining more insight as regards the extent of deviation from normal work behavior (which presumably responds to incentives) and the effectiveness of psychotherapy in treating work-avoidance, challengi
