First isolation of Schizophyllum commune in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

To date, Schizophyllum commune infection has been identified in only humans and dogs. A 7-year-old female harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) died after exhibiting corneal opacity, anorexia, and labored respiration. At necropsy, phthisis of the left eyeball was detected, and multiple nodular lesions were observed in the thoracic and abdominal regions, especially in the lung, heart, and lymph nodes. Histopathologically, numerous hyphae were seen in granulomatous lesions in the eyes, lung, heart, and lymph nodules. An isolate on potato dextrose agar from the eyes, lung, and sputum yielded a rapidly gro

Primary meningeal T-cell lymphoma in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

A 15-year-old female harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) was referred to the Nantes Veterinary School, Nantes, France, with a clinical history of anorexia, seizures, and left hemiplegia. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed large numbers of neoplastic lymphoid cells. After injection of a contrast agent into the cerebrospinal space, radiographs demonstrated an asymmetry of the right lateral ventricle. Necropsy examination revealed a marked edema of the right frontal lobe, extending to the basal nuclei and thalamus in the brain. Histological examination of the brain revealed leptomeningeal lymphoma. I

Pollutants in harp seals (Phoca groenlandica). II. Heavy metals and selenium.

Between 1976 and 1978, 249 harp seals were sampled from five locations in the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic for heavy metal and selenium residue analyses in tissue. Significant loading was apparent only in blood, brain, kidney, liver and muscle. Samples were analysed for mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). The seals carried higher levels of Cd than of the other metals. Residue levels of Cd were highest in kidney tissue; levels of other metals were highest in liver. Both males and females bioaccumulated Cd, Hg and Se. Cd, Hg, Se and Cu residues were detected in

Selective Inner Hair Cell Loss in a Neonate Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina).

Congenital hearing loss is recognized in humans and other terrestrial species. However, there is a lack of information on its prevalence or pathophysiology in pinnipeds. It is important to have baseline knowledge on marine mammal malformations in the inner ear, to differentiate between congenital and acquired abnormalities, which may be caused by infectious pathogens, age, or anthropogenic interactions, such as noise exposure. Ultrastructural evaluation of the cochlea of a neonate harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) by scanning electron microscopy revealed bilateral loss of inner hair cells with inta

Pelodera strongyloides infection in Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) from California.

Skin biopsies were collected from free-ranging harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) from central California (n = 53). Microscopic examination of hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue sections revealed the presence of tightly coiled nematode larvae within the ostia of numerous hair follicles of four seals. Parasites were characterized by paired lateral alae, platymyarian musculature, and an indistinct, uninucleate digestive tract. Mild chronic superficial dermatitis and perifolliculitis were evident microscopically in association with the intrafollicular parasites. Histomorphologic features o

Congenital hemicerebral anomaly in a stranded Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardsi).

A stranded 5-month-old female Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardsi) was presented displaying tachypnea and diminished lung sounds. No neurological abnormalities were noted. The animal was treated for verminous pneumonia, but died 2 wk later. Gross necropsy examination revealed a severe obstructive verminous pneumonia associated with large numbers of Otostrongylus circumlitus. In addition, the majority of the right cerebral hemisphere was absent, with hypoplasia of the left cerebellar hemisphere, absence of the right pyramid, and malformation of the right occipital bone. Cadmium toxicity to ringed seals (Phoca hispida): an epidemiological study of possible cadmium-induced nephropathy and osteodystrophy in ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from Qaanaaq in Northwest Greenland.

The Greenland marine food chains contain high levels of cadmium, mercury and selenium. Concentrations of cadmium in the kidney of ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from the municipalities of Qaanaaq and Upernavik (Northwest Greenland) are among the highest recorded in the Arctic. The purpose of the study was to determine whether cadmium-induced damage in the kidneys and the skeletal system could be detected among 100 ringed seals from Northwest Greenland. The cadmium concentrations in the kidney cortex ranged from 0 to 248 microg/g wet weight (mean=44.5, N=100) in the 99 kidneys examined. Experienc

Congenital Diseases in Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina richardsii) from the Salish Sea.

Postmortem data for harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsii) in the Salish Sea were analyzed for epidemiologic trends in congenital diseases. Cleft palate, cleft lips, or both (n=8) and cardiac defects (n=5) were the most common congenital abnormalities, followed by cases with multiple defects (n=4). No temporal trends or spatial clusters of cases were seen from 2003 to 2019, during which time monitoring effort was consistent. Cases could not be linked to specific causes such as environmental contamination or maternal malnutrition. Our study suggests that a yearly prevalence of 2.9%±2.2 is the

Describing the musculature of mystacial pads in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) using diceCT.

Pinnipeds have long, sensitive, moveable mystacial vibrissae. In other mammals, intrinsic muscles contribute to protracting the vibrissae. However, the mystacial muscles of pinnipeds have not yet been systematically described. Using traditional histological methods provides us with two-dimensional muscle images, but having the ability to visualise these structures in three dimensions would allow for a more comprehensive understanding of pinniped vibrissal anatomy, especially given the challenges posed by their large and extremely curved mystacial pad. We predicted that harbour seals would have

Exposure of harbour seals Phoca vitulina to Brucella in declining populations across Scotland.

Since 2000 there has been a major decline in the abundance of Scottish harbour seals Phoca vitulina. The causes of the decline remain uncertain. The aim of this study was to establish the extent to which the seals in the regions of greatest decline have been exposed to Brucella, a bacterial pathogen that causes reproductive failure in terrestrial mammalian hosts. Tissues from dead seals collected between 1992 and 2013 were cultured for Brucella (n = 150). Serum samples collected from live capture-released seals (n = 343) between 1997 and 2012 were tested for Brucella antibodies using the Rose

Videofluoroscopy of the aerodigestive tract in Phoca vitulina: reshaping perspectives on translational medicine.

Thousands of rescued harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) require rehabilitation worldwide. Many require resource intensive gavage feeding due to abandonment soon after birth. Little is known about seal swallowing, therefore, our primary objective was to determine the feasibility of conducting videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFS) on seal pups prior to their release. Secondarily, we propose swallowing phase descriptions. We adapted a VFS approach used in humans and our feasibility parameters included: bolus detection and consumption, and number of analyzable swallowing events. Unrestrained seals

Simultaneous evaluation of four PCR primer sets for the diagnosis of Streptococcus phocae infection.

The sensitivity of 4 published primer pairs for the detection of Streptococcus phocae strains was evaluated. Primer sets cpn60-F and -R and sodA-F and -R correctly identified S. phocae. Correct identification was also achieved with the primer pairs cael-cae2 and PX1-PX2, but using the reverse complementary version of both reverse primers (caeVQ2 and PXVQ2, respectively). Among the 4 PCR protocols with pure and mixed cultures, the primer pair PX1-PXVQ2 provided the highest level of sensitivity for S. phocae (10(2) and 10(4) cells per PCR tube), and detection was 10- to 100-fold higher than the

Comparative analysis of the fecal bacterial community of five harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

The gut microbiota has many beneficial effects on host metabolism and health, and its composition is determined by numerous factors. It is also assumed that there was a co-evolution of mammals and the bacteria inhabiting their gut. Current knowledge of the mammalian gut microbiota mainly derives from studies on humans and terrestrial animals, whereas those on marine mammals are sparse. However, they could provide additional information on influencing factors, such as the role of diet and co-evolution with the host. In this study, we investigated and compared the bacterial diversity in the fece

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the Eastern Pacific Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina richardii).

Skulls from 214 Eastern Pacific harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria. The museum specimens were acquired from strandings along the west coast of the USA between 1909 and 2014. Ninety-eight skulls (45.8%) were from male animals, 108 (50.5%) from female animals and eight (3.7%) from animals of unknown sex. Their age varied from neonate to adult, with 101 adult animals (47.2%), 93 juvenile animals (43.5%) and 20 neonatal animals (9.3%). The majority of teeth were available for examination (90.0%); 7.5% of teeth were absent artefac

Antibodies to phocine herpesvirus-1 are common in North American harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

Phocine herpesvirus-1 (PhHV-1) has been associated with morbidity and high mortality in neonatal harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) along the Pacific coast of California (USA) and in northern Europe. Seals dying with PhHV-1 associated disease in California primarily have histopathologic evidence of adrenal necrosis or adrenalitis with herpesviral inclusion bodies. Little is known about prevalence of exposure to PhHV-1, modes of disease transmission, and viral pathogenesis in free-ranging harbor seal populations. To evaluate the prevalence in North America, 866 serum samples collected between 1994 a

Anisakid biodiversity in two young harbour seals (Phoca vitulina L.) from coastal South-West Norway.

Anisakid nematodes are widespread marine parasites with complex life cycles involving invertebrates and fish as intermediate or transport hosts, and marine mammals as definitive hosts. Despite their ecological importance, and the zoonotic potential associated with the larval stages found in fish, recent data on anisakid species diversity in pinnipeds from Norwegian waters remain scarce. In this study, we investigated anisakid infections in two juvenile harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) stranded along the southern coast of Norway. Gastrointestinal nematodes were collected, morphologically classifi

Organ-specific differences in mercury speciation and accumulation across ringed seal (Phoca hispida) life stages.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a central nervous system toxicant and exposures can adversely affect the health of marine mammals. Mercuric selenide (HgSe) in marine mammal tissues is hypothesized to result from a protective detoxification mechanism, but toxicokinetic processes contributing to its formation are poorly understood. Here, new data is reported on speciated Hg concentrations in multiple organs of n = 56 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from Labrador, Canada, and compare concentrations to previously published data from Greenland seals. A higher proportion of Hg is found to accumulate in the kid
