Exploring the Diversity and Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degrading Potential of Epiphytic Fungi on Hornbeams from Chronically Polluted Areas.

Plants can 'catch' and mitigate airborne pollutants and are assisted by fungi inhabiting their leaves. The structure and function of the fungal communities inhabiting the phyllosphere of hornbeam trees growing in two chronically polluted areas, the oilfield of Bóbrka and the city center of Warsaw, were compared to the ones growing in one nature reserve, the Białowieża National Park. Fungi were isolated and characterized both phylogenetically and functionally for their potential role in air pollution mitigation. Both culture-dependent (e.g., enzyme assays and tolerance tests) and culture-indepe

Synthesis, Antifungal Activity, and Plant Systemic Mobility of Amino Acid Conjugates of a Thiasporine A-Derived Phenylthiazole Scaffold.

To develop fungicidal candidates with both high antifungal activity and phloem mobility, a total of 34 2-[2-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl]thiazole-4-carbonyl amino acid and amino acid ester conjugates were designed and synthesized. Their structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. Their in vitro antifungal activities against five phytopathogenic fungi and their phloem and xylem mobility in castor bean seedlings were subsequently evaluated. The results showed that the amino acid conjugates 9a-9p generally exhibited higher antifungal activity than the corresponding amino acid ester co

Metformin reduces autoimmune antibody levels in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the past few years, an increasing number of studies have proposed the idea of extending the therapeutic range of metformin from traditional hypoglycaemic to autoimmune diseases, and confirmed in a variety of autoimmune diseases. However, whether metformin can be used to treat Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), which is characterised by thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), is unknown. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether metformin can reduce the levels of TPOAb and TgAb in patients with HT or subclinical hy

[Opportunistic fungi as producers of gray colonies and mycetomata].

Madurella grisea Mackinnon, Ferrada and Montemayor, 1949, is not the unique species that produces gray colonies and black-grained mycetomata. Perhaps, it is not one species, because its grains and colonies may be confounded with those of several species that can be distinguished through their fertile structures. I take this opportunity to compare some characters of Pyrenochaeta romeroi, Phoma-Phillosticta sp., Chaetosphaeronema larense, Pyrenochaeta mackinnonii, Plendomus avramii and of another aleurisopores Dematiacea with those assigned to Madurella grisea. The need is stressed for the searc

Changing Concepts and Current Definition of Majocchi's Granuloma.

Dermatophytic granuloma characterized by perifollicular granulomatous inflammation was first described by Domenico Majocchi and was later named after him, Majocchi's granuloma (MG). Although the initial description was related to a dermatophyte Trichophyton tonsurans, later reports linked MG to non-dermatophytes (Phoma, Aspergillus, Malbranchea), which led to a confusion of disease patterns caused by cutaneous pathogens and general opportunistic microorganisms. Furthermore, several causative agents of MG described in the literature were not confirmed as such. Our review addressed the following

Translocation (5; 11) in a conjunctival MALT lymphoma.

Lymphoma is the most frequent malignant tumor of the ocular adnexa with the most common histologic type being extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (EMZL) of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma). Here we report a case of a 28 year-old male who presented with a left conjunctival mass of one year duration. A diagnosis of primary MALT lymphoma of the conjunctiva was made based on morphologic and immunopheno-typic studies. Chromosome analysis revealed a male karyotype with a translocation t (5;11) (q33;p11.2) as the primary chromosomal abnormality, which, to the best of our knowled

Ten-year experience of bexarotene therapy for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in Finland.

Bexarotene is an oral retinoid shown to be active against the cutaneous manifestations of cutaneous T-cell lym-phoma (CTCL). Literature on the efficacy, dosing and side-effects of bexarotene is sparse. We present here data on 37 Finnish patients with CTCL treated with bexarotene during the last 10 years. Bexarotene was equally effective as monotherapy or when combined with other treatment modalities, resulting in overall responses of approximately 75%. Early-stage CTCL responded better than advanced-stage CTCL (83% vs. 33%). The mean time to observable response was 3 months and the mean durati

Increased Risk of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Skin and Lymphoma Among 5,739 Patients with Bullous Pemphigoid: A Swedish Nationwide Cohort Study.

Evidence about the association of bullous pemphigoid and the risk of cancer is conflicting. Patients diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid (n = 5,739) between 2005 and 2016 were matched with a control cohort from the general population (n = 17,168) to estimate their overall and specific risk of cancer. The risk of squamous cell cancer of the skin (cSCC) was increased in patients with bullous pemphigoid (hazard ratio (HR) 1.3; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-1.6). The risk of lymphoma within one year after bullous pemphigoid diagnosis was also increased (HR 3.1; 95% CI 1.3-7.6). While overall canc

Increased Expression of Delta-like Ligand 4 in Mycosis Fungoides.

In many malignancies, dysregulation of the Notch pathways, composed of 4 Notch receptors (Notch1-4) and 5 Notch ligands (Jagged1-2, Delta-like ligand-1, 3-4), is associated with their development. In mycosis fungoides, interaction between Notch1 and Jagged1 is known to activate the Notch pathways and promote the proliferation of tumour cells. However, the involvement of other Notch ligands has not been reported. This study investigated the roles of Delta-like ligand 4 in mycosis fungoides. Delta-like ligand 4 mRNA levels in lesional skin of patients with mycosis fungoides were significantly el

Tracking and Treating Fungal Contamination in Indoor-Growing Barley Sprouts.

The industrialised production of barley sprouts is a nutritional replenish for livestock, whereas it is being threatened by fungal contamination derived from the closed and humid environment. This study investigates the fungal communities in barley seeds and sprouts and explores the utilisation of ozone water as a mould control method. In barley seeds of 10 cultivars, Alternaria alternata, Phoma epicoccina and Fusarium cerealis were the most abundant fungal species and varied between barley cultivars. A significant transformation in fungal communities after seed germination was observed, featu

Use of the extended Phadebas RAST panel in the diagnosis of mould allergy in asthmatic children.

The clinical significance of mould allergens in Phadebas RAST panel was investigated in 121 asthmatic children. They were selected from a total population of 1649 patients. The patients were distributed into four groups, based on the combination of positive or negative skin prick tests (SPT) together with symptoms suggestive or not of mould sensitivity. Mould-specific IgE antibodies were investigated using the original RAST panel (Alternaria, Aspergillus, Candida, Cladosporium, Mucor and Penicillium) and a set of 10 additional mould-allergen discs (Aureobasidium, Botrytis, Curvularia, Epicoccu

Endophytic fungi from Cissus quadrangularis plant a promising source of bioactive compounds.

Cissus quadrangularis is a succulent, perennial plant belonging to the family Vitaceae typically found in Asia and Africa's tropical and subtropical forest zones. It is an ancient medicinal plant, containing phytosterols, polyphenols, flavonoids, carbohydrates, and ascorbic acid. Due to the presence of phytosterols it plays a crucial role in bone fracture healing. However, due to the limited resources of these medicinal plants there is a need to search for a reservoir of biologically active metabolites. This medicinal property of the plants therefore may be attributed to the endophytic fungi w

A new compound, phomaherbarine A, induces cytolytic reactivation in epstein-barr virus-positive B cell lines.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the first virus found to induce cancer in humans, has been frequently detected in various types of B cell lymphomas. During its latent phase, EBV expresses a limited set of proteins crucial for its persistence. Induction of the lytic phase of EBV has shown promise in the treatment of EBV-associated malignancies. The present study assessed the ability of phomaherbarine A, a novel compound derived from the endophytic fungus Phoma herbarum DBE-M1, to stimulate lytic replication of EBV in B95-8 cells. Phomaherbarine A was found to efficiently initiate the expression of bo
