Neoglottic activity in tracheoesophageal phonation.

It has been generally accepted that the retropharyngeal wall protrudes into the lumen and forms a prominence during alaryngeal phonation. Although the prominence is thought to be responsible for the vibratory source, the relationship between the vocalization process and the dynamics of the prominence is not well known. This study is undertaken to clarify the above-described relationship during tracheoesophageal (TE) phonation, one of the most common forms of voice restoration following total laryngectomy. Electromyography (EMG) with simultaneous manometry and fiberoptic observation of the hypo

The association of laryngoceles with ventricular phonation.

Laryngoceles represent dilatations of the laryngeal saccule that may extend internally into the airway, or externally through the thyrohyoid membrane. Unilateral laryngoceles are uncommon clinical entities and bilateral laryngoceles are rare. Certain activities like glass blowing and playing a wind instrument are associated with laryngocele development, as is laryngeal carcinoma in the ventricular area. This case describes development of bilateral laryngoceles in a patient who chronically uses ventricular phonation during speech. The pathogenesis involves repetitive elevation of intralaryngeal

A methodological study of hemilaryngeal phonation.

An excised hemilarynx setup was developed. The phonatory characteristics of nine excised canine larynges were examined. The left vocal fold of each larynx was then removed and substituted with a vertical plexiglass plate. The larynges were phonated again. Recordings were made of phonation threshold pressure, sound pressure level, average glottal flow, fundamental frequency, and amplitude of vocal fold vibration as observed with a video stroboscope. Measurements were made over a range of subglottal pressures. For the hemilarynx, simultaneous recordings of intraglottal pressure and vocal fold co

Measures of phonation type in Hmong.

This study examines measures of glottal flow for vowels of Hmong, a Southeast Asian language which uses breathy and normal phonation contrastively. A software inverse filter was used to recover glottal airflow from oral airflow recordings. Properties of glottal flow measured in the time domain were glottal pulse symmetry and relative closed-phase duration. In the frequency domain, measures of spectral tilt and the amplitude difference between F0 and H2 were applied to discrete Fourier transforms (DFTs) of the glottal flow waveforms. Spectral tilt could not be reliably measured for many tokens.

Maximum phonation time: variability and reliability.

The objective of the study was to determine maximum phonation time reliability as a function of the number of trials, days, and raters in dysphonic and control subjects. Two groups of adult subjects participated in this reliability study: a group of outpatients with functional or organic dysphonia versus a group of healthy control subjects matched by age and gender. Over a period of maximally 6 weeks, three video recordings were made of five subjects' maximum phonation time trials. A panel of five experts were responsible for all measurements, including a repeated measurement of the subjects'

Vibratory regime classification of infant phonation.

Infant phonation is highly variable in many respects, including the basic vibratory patterns by which the vocal tissues create acoustic signals. Previous studies have identified the regular occurrence of nonmodal phonation types in normal infant phonation. The glottis is like many oscillating systems that, because of nonlinear relationships among the elements, may vibrate in ways representing the deterministic patterns classified theoretically within the mathematical framework of nonlinear dynamics. The infant's preverbal vocal explorations present such a variety of phonations that it may be p

Neoglottic vibration in tracheoesophageal shunt phonation.

The purpose of the present study was to examine vibratory patterns of the neoglottis and to ascertain the neoglottic conditions that could cause failure in tracheoesophageal shunt phonation. We studied 30 tracheoesophageal shunt speakers while using "trap-door" type voice prostheses. Videostroboscopy was undertaken to investigate vibratory patterns of the neoglottis during phonation of the sustained vowel sound /e/ in these patients. The voice qualities of the patients were judged perceptually. A regular neoglottic vibration was observed in 21 patients. Nine patients had irregular neoglottic v

Regulating glottal airflow in phonation: application of the maximum power transfer theorem to a low dimensional phonation model.

Two competing views of regulating glottal airflow for maximum vocal output are investigated theoretically. The maximum power transfer theorem is used as a guide. A wide epilarynx tube (laryngeal vestibule) matches well with low glottal resistance (believed to correspond to the "yawn-sigh" approach in voice therapy), whereas a narrow epilarynx tube matches well with a higher glottal resistance (believed to correspond to the "twang-belt" approach). A simulation model is used to calculate mean flows, peak flows, and oral radiated pressure for an impedance ratio between the vocal tract (the load)

Assessing Laryngeal Neuromotor Activity from Phonation.

Neurodegenerative motor disorders affect the neuromuscular system challenging daily life and normal activity. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is among the most prevalent ones, with a large impact and rising prevalence rates. Speech is most affected by PD as far as phonatory and articulatory performance is concerned. Neuromotor activity (NMA) alterations have an impact on larynx muscles responsible for vocal fold adduction and abduction, hampering phonation stability and regularity. The main muscular articulators involved in phonation control are the cricothyroid (tensor) and thyroarytenoid (relaxer)

Ventricular-fold dynamics in human phonation.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors aimed (a) to provide a classification of the ventricular-fold dynamics during voicing, (b) to study the aerodynamic impact of these motions on vocal-fold vibrations, and (c) to assess whether ventricular-fold oscillations could be sustained by aerodynamic coupling with the vocal folds. METHOD: A 72-sample database of vocal gestures accompanying different acoustical events comprised high-speed cinematographic, audio, and electroglottographic recordings of 5 subjects. Combining the physiological correlates with a theoretical model of phonation, the vocal-vent

What kind of phonation causes the strongest vocal fold collision? - A hemi-larynx phonation contact pressure study.

This paper presents a measurement setup which is able to measure the distribution of small scale pressure on an area of 15.2 mm × 30.4 mm with a sample rate up to 1.2 kHz. It was used to investigate the contact pressures of vocal folds during phonation. This was performed in ex vivo experiments of 11 porcine larynges. The contact pressure at the medial surface and other phonation parameters, as the glottal resistance and the closing velocity of the vocal fold, were measured at different adduction and elongation levels and air flow rates. A statistical analysis was carried out. It could be show

Dynamics of phonatory posturing at phonation onset.

INTRODUCTION: In speech and singing, the intrinsic laryngeal muscles set the prephonatory posture prior to the onset of phonation. The timing and shape of the prephonatory glottal posture can directly affect the resulting phonation type. We investigated the dynamics of human laryngeal phonatory posturing. METHODS: Onset of vocal fold adduction to phonation was observed in 27 normal subjects using high-speed video recording. Subjects were asked to utter a variety of phonation types (modal, breathy, pressed, /i/ following sniff). Digital videokymography with concurrent acoustic signal was analy

Optimal glottal configuration for ease of phonation.

Recent experimental studies have shown the existence of optimal values of the glottal width and convergence angle, at which the phonation threshold pressure is minimum. These results indicate the existence of an optimal glottal configuration for ease of phonation, not predicted by the previous theory. In this paper, the origin of the optimal configuration is investigated using a low dimensional mathematical model of the vocal fold. Two phenomena of glottal aerodynamics are examined: pressure losses due to air viscosity, and air flow separation from a divergent glottis. The optimal glottal conf
