Interwoven electronic and phononic topologies via electron-phonon coupling and locality-engineered edge states in monolayer ZrBr.

Monolayer ZrBr combines excellent electronic and phononic transport, forming a compact platform for coupled topology. First-principles and Wannier-Green's-function calculations show symmetry-protected near-linear crossings along K-Γ-M-K without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). With SOC, a direct gap of ∼45.6 meV opens at Γ with a pronounced reorganization of Zr-4d orbital weights. The Wilson-loop evolution yields Z2 = 1, and semi-infinite boundary spectra exhibit a gap-traversing helical edge channel, consistent with the constant-energy contour and in-plane spin winding. Phonon dispersions contain n

Group theory analysis of phonons in monolayer chromium trihalides and their Janus structures.

A contrastive investigation of the symmetry aspects of phonons in monolayer chromium trihalides and their Janus structures Y3-Cr2-X3 (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I) was presented within group theory. We classified all phonon vibration modes at the Brillouin-zone center (Γ) into irreducible representations. The infrared and Raman activity of optic phonons, Raman tensors, and the possible polarization assignments of Raman active phonons are further predicted. We clarify the discrepancy concerning the Raman and infrared activity of optic modes in monolayer CrI3. It is also found that the Raman and infrared

Converging ab initio phonon simulations for organic molecular crystals: the effect of charge density grids and phonon dispersion sampling.

We here explore how some frequently overlooked computational parameters affect the simulation of phonon frequencies in organic molecular crystals within the framework of density functional perturbation theory in a pseudo-core plane wave basis set. Specifically, we investigate how the density of the Fourier grid that is used to map real-space charge density affects the phonon frequencies and eigenvectors. We find that varying the density of this Fourier grid can affect low-frequency phonons by tens of wavenumbers and significantly alter the associated normal mode eigenvectors. Furthermore, we d

Mode-Selective and Anomalous Decoherence Mechanisms of Interlayer Phonons in a Topological Insulator.

Interlayer phonons in van der Waals (vdW) quantum materials offer promising opportunities for ultrafast control and engineering of material properties at the nanoscale. A fundamental understanding of their dephasing mechanisms is crucial for advanced phononic device applications and for probing buried interfaces. However, the interplay between interlayer phonons and quantum electronic phases remains mostly unexplored. Here, we investigate the mode-dependent dynamics of quantized interlayer breathing modes in a topological insulator using ultrafast coherent phonon spectroscopy. By varying the p

Optically Driven Formation of Tailored Phonon Cavities.

Optical control of lattice dynamics with high spatiotemporal precision offers a route to manipulate local quantum states-such as magnetic, spin, and topological states-by exploiting the coupling between the lattice and other degrees of freedom. Here, deterministic strain engineering is demonstrated with spatial and temporal characteristics in van der Waals materials using spatially structured femtosecond optical fields. By confining structural oscillations at a submicron scale, phonon cavities with programmable dimensions, oscillation periods, and symmetries are engineered. Through ultrafast e

Electron-phonon coupling in La3In under pressure.

Conventional superconducting parameters Eliashberg spectral function, phonon DOS, average electron-phonon coupling constant & superconducting transition temperature of La3In were calculated at ambient and applied positive hydrostatic pressure. Ambient pressure electron-phonon coupling constant was found to be 1.43 and superconducting transition temperature was calculated to be 8.7 K which is close to the experimental reported value of 9.5 K. Logarithmic average phonon frequency at ambient pressure was found to be 6.21 × 10-3eV. Phonon dispersion relations for the ambient and applied positive h

Phonon signatures for polaron formation in an anharmonic semiconductor.

Mechanistic studies on lead halide perovskites (LHPs) in recent years have suggested charge carrier screening as partially responsible for long carrier diffusion lengths and lifetimes that are key to superior optoelectronic properties. These findings have led to the ferroelectric large polaron proposal, which attributes efficient charge carrier screening to the extended ordering of dipoles from symmetry-breaking unit cells that undergo local structural distortion and break inversion symmetry. It remains an open question whether this proposal applies in general to semiconductors with LHP-like a

Phonon Thermal Hall Effect in Strontium Titanate.

It has been known for more than a decade that phonons can produce an off-diagonal thermal conductivity in the presence of a magnetic field. Recent studies of thermal Hall conductivity, κ_{xy}, in a variety of contexts, however, have assumed a negligibly small phonon contribution. We present a study of κ_{xy} in quantum paraelectric SrTiO_{3}, which is a nonmagnetic insulator and find that its peak value exceeds what has been reported in any other insulator, including those in which the signal has been qualified as "giant." Remarkably, κ_{xy}(T) and κ(T) peak at the same temperature and the for

Spin-Phonon Interfaces in Coupled Nanomechanical Cantilevers.

Coupled micro- and nanomechanical oscillators are of fundamental and technical interest for emerging quantum technologies. Upon interfacing with long-lived solid-state spins, the coherent manipulation of the quantum hybrid system becomes possible even at ambient conditions. Although the ability of these systems to act as a quantum bus inducing long-range spin-spin interactions has been known, the possibility to coherently couple electron/nuclear spins to the common modes of multiple oscillators and map their mechanical motion to spin-polarization has not been experimentally demonstrated. We he

Magnetic Field Tunable Raman Scattering and Zone-Folding Phonons in Two-Dimensional Magnet CrSBr.

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnets has attracted significant attention in both fundamental research in low-dimensional physics and potential applications in spintronics. CrSBr, an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) van der Waals material with intralayer ferromagnetic (FM) order along the b axis, stands out as one of the most extensively studied 2D magnetic materials due to the strong coupling between its electronic structure and magnetic properties. Here, we demonstrate a deep connection between the magnetic order and Raman scattering of phonons in CrSBr. By applying a magnetic field al

The Properties of Current Induced Chiral Phonons Recapitulate the Characteristics of the CISS Effect.

Chiral phonons, with their intrinsic angular momentum, are potential contributors to the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, which can induce significant spin polarization in the absence of strong spin-orbit coupling. An open question is how nonzero total phonon angular momentum may be generated. If chiral phonons are to underpin the observed CISS effect, they must have the symmetries observed in CISS experiments. That is, reversing the chirality or reversing the direction of the current flow through the active CISS structure should influence the phonon angular momentum in the same

Lattice-Vibration-Induced High-Frequency Phonons Enhance Spin Dynamics in Ruddlesden-Popper Cs2GeI2Cl2/InSe Heterostructure.

The phenomenon of intriguing Rashba spin splitting, which is driven by intrinsic structural symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC), has been observed in various perovskite materials. However, it remains unclear how phonon vibrational frequency affects spin carrier dynamics in two-dimensional perovskites exhibiting the Rashba effect. A thorough exploration of the electronic structures and the mechanism behind the strain-induced lattice vibration on spin dynamics in Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) Cs2GeI2Cl2/InSe heterostructure is presented herein, based on nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD

Breathing ferroelectricity, flat-bands and multiple chiral phonons in van der Waals breathing kagome Nb3Cl8.

Van der Waals layered Nb3X8 (X=Cl, Br, I) are predicted to integrate multiple intriguing physical properties, notably multiferroicity and flat-bands that are highly promising for novel-principle memories and superconductors. However, direct experimental validations such as the proposed breathing ferroelectricity are lacking. Even the electronic band structure concerning flat-bands still remains inconsistent. Here, we systematically explore the structure and electrical/optical properties through a multifaceted study of Nb3Cl8. We demonstrate that, with an intralayer breathing Kagome lattice and

Modulating Photons and Phonons in Graphene-Based Phase Change Materials for Solar-Thermal-Electrical Generation.

Solar-thermal-electrical generators offer a promising route for the conversion of solar energy into electricity. Their reliability can be enhanced by integrating phase change materials (PCMs) to buffer thermal fluctuations and ensure stable operation, yet conventional PCMs often suffer from low thermal conductivity and poor solar capture. Herein, photosensitive Co/C-anchored reduced graphene oxide (rGO) conductive framework was fabricated via metal-organic framework (MOF) pyrolysis-assisted zinc volatilization strategy. This design enables the in situ formation of MOF-derived uniformly dispers

Remote imaging of single cell 3D morphology with ultrafast coherent phonons and their resonance harmonics.

Cell morphological analysis has long been used in cell biology and physiology for abnormality identification, early cancer detection, and dynamic change analysis under specific environmental stresses. This work reports on the remote mapping of cell 3D morphology with an in-plane resolution limited by optics and an out-of-plane accuracy down to a tenth of the optical wavelength. For this, GHz coherent acoustic phonons and their resonance harmonics were tracked by means of an ultrafast opto-acoustic technique. After illustrating the measurement accuracy with cell-mimetic polymer films we map the

Electrons, Excitons, and Phonons in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskites: Connecting Structural, Optical, and Electronic Properties.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites are stoichiometric compounds consisting of alternating inorganic metal-halide sheets and organoammonium cationic layers. This materials class is widely tailorable in composition, structure, and dimensionality and is providing an intriguing playground for the solid-state chemistry and physics communities to uncover structure-property relationships. In this Perspective, we describe semiconducting 2D perovskites containing lead and tin halide inorganic frameworks. In these 2D perovskites, charges are typically confined to the inorganic framework because of

Demagnetization-Driven Nanoscale Chirality-Selective Phonon Transport.

Chiral-lattice degrees of freedom can offer novel chirality-selective functionalities for thermotronic applications. Chiral phonons, which carry both heat and angular momentum, can arise from broken chiral degeneracy in phonon bands or from angular momentum transfer from photons or spins. Here, we demonstrate a nanoscale chirality-selective phonon transport based on a simple heterostructure of ferromagnetic [Co/Pt] multilayers and insulating chiral α-SiO2. Using magneto-optic thermometry, we show that the effective thermal conductivity of α-SiO2 depends systematically on both the magnetization

Probing Phonon Polaritons via Electron Microscopy: A Review.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) are hybrid excitations arising from the coupling of optical phonons and electromagnetic waves, providing a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interaction studies and engineering the infrared response of polar materials. Their capability to confine and manipulate light well below the diffraction limit, combined with low losses, has enabled breakthroughs in subwavelength waveguiding, hyperlensing, infrared imaging, and molecular sensing. While far-field spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy have been widely used to characterize PhPs, t

Spin-Phonon Coupling and Magnetic Ordering in Layered CrPS4.

Magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials offers a platform for exploring dimensionality-tuned magnetic ordering and distinct spin-phonon coupling. Among such materials, CrPS4 stands out as an air-stable A-type antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature of 36 K. Here, we investigate the evolution of phonon modes influenced by magnetic ordering in CrPS4 across varying temperatures and layer thicknesses by using Raman spectroscopy, supported by theoretical calculations. Due to weak interlayer coupling, the thickness-dependent changes in phonon frequencies are negligible (<0.5 cm-1). Notably, anoma

Bypassing Nonlocal Phenomena in Metals Using Phonon-Polaritons.

Electromagnetic design relies on an accurate understanding of light-matter interactions yet often overlooks electronic length scales. Under extreme confinement, this omission can lead to nonclassical effects such as nonlocal response. Here, we use mid-infrared phonon-polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) screened by monocrystalline gold flakes to push the limits of nanolight confinement unobstructed by nonlocal phenomena, even when the polariton phase velocity approaches the Fermi velocities of electrons in gold. We employ near-field imaging to probe polaritons in nanometer-thin crystals
