Species belonging to the filamentous cyanobacterial genus Trichodesmium are responsible for a significant fraction of oceanic nitrogen fixation. The availability of phosphorus (P) likely constrains the growth of Trichodesmium in certain regions of the ocean. Moreover, Trichodesmium species have recently been shown to play a role in an emerging oceanic phosphorus redox cycle, further highlighting the key role these microbes play in many biogeochemical processes in the contemporary ocean. Here, we show that Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101 can grow on the reduced inorganic compound phosphite as i

The condensation of dialkyl α-hydroxy-benzylphosphonates with dialkyl phosphites and that of α-hydroxybenzyl-diphenylphosphine oxide with diphenylphosphine oxide unexpectedly gave the corresponding phosphorylated α-hydroxy derivatives. This new reaction proved to be general. The formation of the two products may be similar and involves the attack of the hydroxy group of the α-hydroxyphosphonate or α-hydroxyphosphine oxide on the phosphorus atom of the trivalent tautomer form (Y2POH) of the Y2P(O)H reagent (Y= MeO, EtO, or Ph) going with the elimination of an alcohol and water molecule, respect

The availability of orthophosphate (Pi) is a key determinant of crop productivity because its accessibility to plants is poor due to its conversion to unavailable forms. Weed's competition for this essential macronutrient further reduces its bio-availability. To compensate for the low Pi use efficiency and address the weed hazard, excess Pi fertilizers and herbicides are routinely applied, resulting in increased production costs, soil degradation and eutrophication. These outcomes necessitate the identification of a suitable alternate technology that can address the problems associated with th

The phototransformation of phosphite (HPO32-, H2PO3-, +3) from Lake Taihu water (THW) under natural sunlight was evaluated. No direct phosphite photoreaction was observed under sunlight. Suspended solids were shown to play important roles in the indirect photoreaction of phosphite in lake water. The phototransformation of phosphite followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and the kinetics constants (k, d-1) decreased as: 0.0324 (original THW), 0.0236 (sterilized THW), 0.0109 (filtered THW) and 0.0102 (sterilized filtered THW). Original THW with 1 mmol L-1 NO3- added was used to simulate t

Phosphorous (P) plays a critical role for all living organisms as a structural component of RNA, DNA and phospholipids. Microalgae are autotrophs organisms that have been reported to only assimilate the fully oxidized phosphate (Pi) as P source. However, there are microorganisms capable of utilizing P reduced compounds (i.e. phosphite (Phi) and hypophosphite) as a sole P source, such as bacteria and cyanobacteria. In this study, we evaluated whether microalgae, such as Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Botryococcus braunii and Ettlia oleoabundans, are capable of using Phi as a sole P source. Our stud

Phosphite (Phi), a phloem-mobile oxyanion of phosphorous acid (H(3)PO(3)), protects plants against diseases caused by oomycetes. Its mode of action is unclear, as evidence indicates both direct antibiotic effects on pathogens as well as inhibition through enhanced plant defense responses, and its target(s) in the plants is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that the biotrophic oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis (Hpa) exhibits an unusual biphasic dose-dependent response to Phi after inoculation of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), with characteristics of indirect activity at low doses (10 mm

CONTEXT: Phosphite esters, a class of organo-phosphorus compounds, are widely used as non-discolouring antioxidants in many polymeric products. Apart from normal radical scavenging, they prevent the splitting of hydroperoxides (ROOH), one of the initial products of autoxidation, from forming extremely reactive free radicals such as alkoxy (RO.) and hydroxy (.OH) radicals. The inherent molecular properties of antioxidants and the chemistry of their action are essential for researchers working in this field of science. Four organo-phosphorous compounds well-known for their antioxidant activity a

A novel and convenient method for the N-formylation reaction of amines with DMF as a formylating agent has been developed, utilizing a catalytic amount of diethyl phosphite/imidazole. Diethyl phosphite, as a nucleophilic catalyst, plays a significant role in this conversion. The presented method has a broad substrate scope, and various N-formyl products were obtained in good to excellent yields. Moreover, by using DMA instead of DMF, the N-acetylation reaction was also successful. The reaction of o-phenylenediamines with DMF afforded the corresponding benzimidazoles. Furthermore, N-sulfonyl am

Three new zinc phosphites, [HIm]2[Zn3(HPO3)4] (1), [Zn2(HPO3)2Im2] (2), and [Zn(HPO3)Im] (3) (Im = imidazole), have been synthesized from the hydro/solvothermal reaction of zinc acetate, dimethyl phosphite, and imidazole by varying the temperature and solvent of the reaction medium. The structure of 1 is built from vertex-sharing of four HPO3-capped Zn3P3 units and adopts an open framework with 12-ring channels stabilized by HIm cations via N-H···O hydrogen bonds. For 2, the inorganic skeleton is comprised of alternating ZnO4 and HPO3 tetrahedra, while the coordinatively associated ZnN2O2 frag

Phosphorylation of amines, alcohols, and sulfoximines are accomplished using molecular iodine as a catalyst and H2O2 as the sole oxidant under mild reaction conditions. This method provides an easy route for synthesizing a variety of phosphoramidates, phosphorus triesters and sulfoximine-derived phosphoramidates which are of biological importance.

Reduced oxidation state phosphorus species, such as phosphite, have been proposed as more soluble phosphorus sources, yet their role in phosphorylation chemistry remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigate the concurrent oxidation of phosphite and phosphorylation/phosphonylation of adenosine under prebiotically plausible conditions. Using aqueous reaction systems containing phosphite, urea, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and adenosine, we show synthesis of adenosine phosphates, adenosine phosphites, adenosyl adenosine phosphate, and trace amounts of ADP (adenosine diphosphate). Phosphorus-based compounds are increasingly studied for energy applications due to their unique functional properties and practical uses. However, phosphites, particularly in the gas phase, remain relatively underexplored. As a result, significant gaps persist in our understanding of their reactivity and stability. This study investigates trimethyl phosphite (TMPI) by combining quantum-chemical calculations to determine its thermochemical properties, reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF-MD) simulations to identify decomposition pathways, and kinetic calculations of hydrogen-atom abstraction (HA

Phosphate is often a limiting resource, directly affecting the availability of key biomolecules such as nucleotides. To cope with phosphate scarcity, bacteria have evolved enzymes that utilize alternative phosphorus compounds, including phosphite (Pt). Although a few enzymes oxidize Pt to produce phosphate, the enzymes responsible for Pt oxidation in many environmental bacteria remain unidentified, and the role of microbial Pt oxidation in the global phosphorus cycle is not yet fully understood. In this study, we performed bioinformatic analyses of three Pt-oxidizing enzymes: the native Pt oxi

Carbon-phosphorus bond formation is significant in synthetic chemistry because phosphorus-containing compounds offer numerous indispensable biochemical roles. While there is a plethora of methods to access organophosphorus compounds, phosphonylations of readily accessible alkyl radicals to form aliphatic phosphonates are rare and not commonly used in synthesis. Herein, we introduce a novel phosphorus radical trap "BecaP" that enables facile and efficient phosphonylation of alkyl radicals under visible light photocatalytic conditions. Importantly, the ambiphilic nature of BecaP allows redox neu

Bioaugmentation, the process of soil restoration by introducing microorganisms capable of degrading pollutants, is a promising and cost-effective strategy for environmental remediation. Aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene (BTEX), are highly toxic environmental contaminants that could be transformed to less harmful products through the inoculation of certain organisms capable of BTEX degradation. However, a barrier to successful bioaugmentation is the inoculant's failure to establish within the resident microbial community. In an effort to improve inocula

A phosphite (Pt)-dependent biological containment strategy, achieved by introducing a Pt-metabolic pathway and disrupting endogenous phosphate transporters, renders Escherichia coli growth strictly dependent on Pt, a compound rarely detected in natural environments, thereby preventing unintended environmental spread. In this study, we demonstrated that expression of phosphate regulon (Pho regulon) genes was markedly upregulated in a Pt-dependent E. coli strain due to the elimination of phoU, a negative regulator of the Pho regulon, along with the high-affinity phosphate transporter pstSCAB. An efficient and transition-metal-free three-component reaction with benzynes formed in situ from 2-(trimethylsilyl)aryl triflate, phosphites, and ketones was developed for the synthesis of benzoxaphosphole 1-oxides. An array of benzoxaphosphole 1-oxides were prepared from both activated and non-activated ketones in moderate to good yields with a broad functional group tolerance. This reaction is useful for preparing organophosphorus compounds encountered in natural products and materials.

An efficient and straightforward method for the synthesis of aryl(alkynyl)phosphinates was developed via a three-component coupling reaction involving arynes, phosphites, and alkynes. An array of aryl(alkynyl)phosphinates were produced from both aryl and aliphatic group-substituted acetylenes. This operationally simple reaction is tolerant to many functional groups, affording various aryl(alkynyl)phosphinates in moderate to good yields. The synthetic utility of alkynyl phosphinates afforded by this method was demonstrated by the elaboration of the products into various phosphorus-containing co

The reaction of triarylantimony diacetates [Ar3Sb(OAc)2] with dialkyl H-phosphites [H-PO(OR)2] in the presence of a Pd(PPh3)4 (5 mol%) catalyst led to the formation of arylphosphonates in moderate to excellent yield under base-free conditions. This reaction is the first example of carbon-phosphorus bond formation by using an organoantimony compound as a pseudo-halide.

Contrary to a previous report, the sulfurisation of phosphorus(III) derivatives by 3-amino-1,2,4-dithiazole-5-thione (xanthane hydride) does not yield carbon disulfide and cyanamide as the additional reaction products. The reaction of xanthane hydride with triphenyl phosphine or trimethyl phosphite yields triphenyl phosphine sulfide or trimethyl thiophosphate, respectively, and thiocarbamoyl isothiocyanate which has been trapped with nucleophiles. The reaction pathway involves initial nucleophilic attack of the phosphorus at sulfur next to the thiocarbonyl group of xanthane hydride followed by
