Dietary phosphorus exacerbates bone loss induced by cadmium in ovariectomized rats.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal bone loss can be exacerbated by environmental contaminants, including the heavy metal cadmium (Cd). We hypothesized that incorporating phosphorus (P) into the diet would lead to the chelation of Cd into P, preventing its absorption and subsequent bone loss. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we used ovariectomized rats as a model of postmenopausal osteoporosis to examine the deleterious effects of Cd on bone with and without added P. Fifty 3-month-old ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to five treatment groups (n = 10 per group) for 3 months as follows:

Dietary 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol supplementation increases natural phytate phosphorus utilization in chickens.

These studies were conducted to determine if supplementation of a corn-soybean meal diet with 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25-(OH)2D3] would increase the utilization of natural phytate phosphorus by broiler chickens. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary 1,25-(OH)2D3 in the presence and absence of supplemental phytase and at several dietary levels of inorganic phosphorus supplementation. The criteria measured in these studies were weight gain, gain:feed ratio, bone ash, rickets due to phosphorus deficiency, plasma calcium and phosphorus and retention of calcium,

A study of the association between serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and serum phosphorus concentration or dietary phosphorus intake.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) hydrolyzes a variety of monophosphate esters into phosphoric acid and alcohol at a high optimum pH (pH 8-10). Human ALPs are classified into four types: tissue-non specific (TNSALP, liver/bone/kidney), intestinal, placental, and germ cell types. Based on studies of hypophosphatasia (HPP), which is a systemic bone disease caused by the presence of either one or two pathologic mutations in ALPL that encodes TNSALP, TNSALP was suggested to be indispensable for skeletal mineralization. In this study, we explored the possibility that dietary nutrients contribute to regula

Dietary phosphorus source reprograms the kidney-intestine axis to dictate calcium-phosphorus efficiency and egg production in aging hens.

BACKGROUND: The decline in egg production in aging hens poses a significant challenge to sustainable poultry production. Given that evidence suggests the phosphorus source affects late‑lay performance, we tested the hypothesis that the dietary phosphorus source is a decisive regulator sustaining performance by reprogramming systemic mineral homeostasis. Using a systems biology approach, we analyzed the coordinated expression of eleven key mineral transporter genes across the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and kidney of hens fed dicalcium phosphate (DCP) or tricalcium phosphate (TCP). RESULTS: Duri

Hyperparathyroidism, Serum Phosphorus and Dietary Intake in Hemodialysis Patients: Is There a Novel Relationship?

The management of hyperparathyroidism (intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) serum levels > 585 pg/mL), frequently focuses on the appropriate control of mineral and bone markers, with the decrease in serum and dietary phosphorus as two of the targets. We aimed to investigate the association between iPTH, serum phosphorus levels and dietary intake. This was a cross-sectional, multicenter, observational study with 561 patients on hemodialysis treatment. Clinical parameters, body composition and dietary intake were assessed. For the analysis, patients were divided into three groups: (a) iPTH < 130, (

Association of dietary phosphate and serum phosphorus concentration by levels of kidney function.

BACKGROUND: The health implications of dietary phosphorus intake and the role of kidney function in managing serum phosphorus homeostasis are well studied. However, examining the source of dietary phosphorus intake and its impact on serum phosphorus has not been characterized in population studies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to distinguish the association of food sources of organic phosphorus and inorganic phosphate additives with serum phosphorus concentration. DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis of 24-h food recall data from 7895 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Exam

Understanding sources of dietary phosphorus in the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease.

In individuals with chronic kidney disease, high dietary phosphorus (P) burden may worsen hyperparathyroidism and renal osteodystrophy, promote vascular calcification and cardiovascular events, and increase mortality. In addition to the absolute amount of dietary P, its type (organic versus inorganic), source (animal versus plant derived), and ratio to dietary protein may be important. Organic P in such plant foods as seeds and legumes is less bioavailable because of limited gastrointestinal absorption of phytate-based P. Inorganic P is more readily absorbed by intestine, and its presence in p

Associations of Dietary Calcium and Phosphorus With Vascular and Valvular Calcification: The ARIC Study.

BACKGROUND: High dietary calcium and phosphorus may accelerate vascular calcification, but epidemiological data are inconsistent. Most of those studies assessed diet at one point and have not been systematically evaluated. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the associations of dietary calcium and phosphorus intakes in middle age with coronary artery and extra-coronary calcification at older age. METHODS: We studied 1,914 participants from the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities) study (mean age 80.5 years) without coronary heart disease who underwent chest computed tom

Dietary Phosphorus as a Marker of Mineral Metabolism and Progression of Diabetic Kidney Disease.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient that is critically important in the control of cell and tissue function and body homeostasis. Phosphorus excess may result in severe adverse medical consequences. The most apparent is an impact on cardiovascular (CV) disease, mainly through the ability of phosphate to change the phenotype of vascular smooth muscle cells and its contribution to pathologic vascular, valvular and other soft tissue calcification. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most prevalent chronic disease manifesting with the persistent derangement of phosphate homeostasis. Diabetes and r

Relationship between true digestibility of dietary phosphorus and gastrointestinal bacteria of goats.

The present research was conducted to evaluate the connection between the true digestibility of Phosphorus (TDP) in diet and bacterial community structure in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of goats. Twenty-eight Nubian goats were chosen and metabolic experiment was conducted to analyze TDP of research animals. Eight goats were grouped into the high digestibility of phosphorus (HP) phenotype, and another 8 were grouped into the low digestibility of phosphorus (LP) phenotype. And from the rumen, abomasum, jejunim, cecum and colon content of the goats, bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons were seq

The role of dietary phosphorus restriction in the conservative management of chronic renal disease.

Evidence exists that phosphate retention plays a major role in causing secondary hyperparathyroidism, cardiovascular morbidity, and loss of residual renal function in chronic renal disease patients, and that a subtle elevation in serum phosphate occurs at early stages in the course of renal insufficiency. The implementation of a low-phosphorus, low-protein dietary regimen plays a special role in the conservative management of chronic renal disease patients, for the prevention and correction of secondary hyperparathyroidism and for the renal and cardiovascular protection. However, the success a

Haemoglobinuria and hypophosphataemia in postparturient dairy cows without dietary deficiency of phosphorus.

Postparturient haemoglobinuria occurred in 11 Holstein-Friesian cows in 8 dairy herds in East Gippsland, Victoria. The affected cows had a wide range of ages, body condition and production level. Seven of 9 cows sampled were hypophosphataemic, 4 of 8 cows examined had Heinz bodies present in erythrocytes and strong ketonuria was present in 6 of 10 urine samples tested. Herdmates having similar calving dates had mostly normal serum phosphorus levels and none had Heinz bodies. There was no evidence for dietary phosphorus (P) deficiency, hypocuprosis or excessive P drain from high production bein

Improved dietary treatment with low protein and phosphorus restriction in uremic rats.

The independent effect of low-protein or low-phosphorus diets in chronic renal failure were studied. The following four isocaloric diets, which contained various amounts of protein (24%, 6%) and phosphorus (0.5%, 0.12%) were fed to chronically uremic rats: high protein and no phosphorus restriction (HPrNP), high protein and phosphorus restriction (HPrRP), low protein and no phosphorus restriction (LPrNP), and low protein and phosphorus restriction (LPrRP). Adult male rats were made chronically uremic by electrocoagulation of one kidney and contralateral nephrectomy. Two grades of renal damage

The alteration of magnesium, calcium and phosphorus metabolism by dietary magnesium deprivation in postmenopausal women is not affected by dietary boron deprivation.

A study with human volunteers was conducted to test the hypothesis that naturally occurring inadequate intakes of magnesium induce negative magnesium balance and undesirable changes in calcium metabolism variables, and that these changes are influenced by dietary boron. Diets composed of ordinary Western foods providing approximately 118 and 318 mg Mg/d and approximately 0.25 and 3.25 mg B/d were fed in a double-blind Latin square design to 13 healthy, post menopausal Caucasian women (aged 50-78 years) living in a metabolic unit. Magnesium balance, which was positive when dietary magnesium was

The impact of dietary calcium content on phosphorus absorption and retention in growing pigs is enhanced by dietary microbial phytase supplementation.

Sixty growing male pigs were used to test the hypothesis that high dietary Ca content reduces P absorption to a greater extent in microbial phytase-supplemented diets via reducing inositol phosphate (IP) degradation and enhancing P precipitation. Pigs were equally allotted over diets with three Ca contents 2·0, 5·8 and 9·6 g/kg with or without microbial phytase (0 v. 500 FTU/kg) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. Faeces and urine were collected at the end of the 21-d experimental period. Subsequently, pigs were euthanised and digesta quantitatively collected from different gastrointestinal trac

Pilot study of dietary phosphorus restriction and phosphorus binders to target fibroblast growth factor 23 in patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: High levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) are associated with mortality and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Reducing dietary phosphorus intake lowers FGF23 secretion in healthly individuals, but there is little data on its effects in patients with pre-dialysis CKD. METHODS: Using a 2×2 factorial design, we randomly assigned 16 normophosphataemic CKD stage 3-4 patients to receive a 2-week treatment with either lanthanum carbonate 1000 mg three times daily or placebo, and to ingest a tightly controlled diet containing 750 or 1500 mg of dietary phosphorus daily.

Metabolic responses to dietary cholecalciferol and phosphorus in abalone Haliotis discus hannai ino.

Metabolic responses of cholecalciferol (VD(3)) and minerals (Ca, P and Mg) in abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino to dietary VD(3) and phosphorus (P) were investigated. Based on a 2 x 2 factorial design, four casein-gelatin-based diets were formulated. The basal diet was supplemented with either 0 or 2000 IU VD(3)/kg diet and 0 or 10 g P/kg diet. The abalone was reared in P-free artificial seawater for 55 days. Results showed that dietary VD(3) was hydroxylated to 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) [25(OH)D(3)] and 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) [1 alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3)] in abalone, and subsequently raised

Dietary fluoride, unlike bromide or iodide, counteracts phosphorus-induced nephrocalcinosis in female rats.

Supplemental dietary F has been shown to counteract P-induced nephrocalcinosis in female rats. In order to obtain information as to the specificity of this F effect, the effect of other halogens, namely Br and I, on P-induced nephrocalcinosis was studied in weanling female rats. Supplemental dietary Br (5.24 mmol/kg of diet) and I (1.43 mmol/kg of diet) did not influence P-induced nephrocalcinosis, whereas F at equimolar dietary concentrations had marked antinephrocalcinogenic activity. The halogens were added to the diets in the form of KBr, KI, and NaF; the diets were balanced for the kation
